It's very simple. Everyone except Yoshi, DK, Master Hand, and inkling came from some other existing 8 bit work. DK and Inkling were already sprites elsewhere on the internet, while Yoshi is actually just a poor rendition of Kermit.

ScorpioGamer346 You know what though, Assist Trophies are awesome IMO, because Sakurai is essentially saying “You know, I know you wanted *Insert Name Here* to be playable, but the thing is, we can only have so many playable characters in this game, so to at least try to make it up to you, they’ll be an Assist” That way, they can still be fought, but you can’t fight as them. We’re running out of characters to be Assists with Dark Samus and Isabelle recently getting the promotion, so not everyone’s favorite character can be playable. I just kind of wish that people wouldn’t treat Assist Trophies like dirt because they really are one of the best things to ever come out of the Smash Bros Series!
