Cat Giving Birth to 4 Kittens | Maine Coon Luna

Maine Coon Luna gave birth to her kittens a few days ago.
She got six kittens in total, but two were stillborn.
In this video you will see the birthing process from start fo finish. I did not include the footage of the stillborn kittens because it was just too sad.

I did not want to interfere more than necessary, but sometimes I noticed that she wanted something to push against, so that's why I hold against her paw sometimes. She bit off the umbilical cord herself on all kittens except the last one. Since the kitten was stuck and she wasn't biting it, I decided to cut it myself. I could perhaps have done it a bit better, but it was the first time for me and there was not much time to think. That last kitten is now the biggest and most active, so everything went well!

I'm so sorry that the fourth and fifth were stillborn. But the survivors are all so beautiful! Give sweet Luna and her babies love from my twin kitties (two four-year-old male rescues, Sage and Nutmeg) and I! I'm proud of her; she did an excellent job, and I'm in awe of her!

This randomly popped up on my YT feed 18 months after you posted it. Seeing Freya born after following the journey of Freya’s own litter was an emotional roller coaster! Luna really had her work cut out for her that day, and she birthed truly wonderful kittens.

I can't tell you how many times I've been that third hand for the mom's to push against during contractions. Being there for them is one of the privileges I've always treasured. The last time for me was similar to yours except I lost one because without me realizing it the first got stuck somehow in the birth canal and the next 3 were born. I thought that was all as she seemed to stop having contractions and was resting at about 3 am. We got up at 10 am to notice she had started having contractions again, how long, I don't know. I was so scared, I rushed her and the babies to the vet and that's where we found out what happened, a fifth was trapped behind the first. Whew! We were able to rescue him and only the first didn't make it. I'd wondered why it seemed she'd licked away a whole sac and placenta and the first baby that came out had both. I can't believe I didn't think anything was wrong. You'd have loved the baby that was saved. He looked just like Luna but with Buster's fur length. Big old gray boy. I wish I could post pics here.

It's normal for cats to eat them. I didn't notice anything special about her afterwards. It's just some extra nutrition for the cat mother 🙂

How exciting for you! The box is one of those clothes storage boxes from IKEA. I don't know exactly what they are called, but they can be placed under a bed for example. It's the perfect size for a kitten nest. The "walls" are wardrobe drawers standing on the side. I think it turned into a very nice "DIY" kitten nest 😄 Good luck!

Thank you! It's fine to have that much fur. It's warm and cosy for the kittens and they can also climb in it. Perhaps it can be a little bit harder for them to find the right place, but it has worked fine so far. The fur on her paws are just very beautiful in my opinion!

@@Maine_Coon_Kittens this response was actually helpful because I was worried my Maine Coon which has very thick long fur would need her belly trimmed but the first baby is already finding the nipples and has nursed so I’m relieved so see it’s not necessary to shave the belly like I see in some videos of the momma cats.

I read a study somewhere that found that about 8 % of kittens are stillborn and an additional 8 % don't make it through their first month. I think it was for Maine Coons. So it's not that unusual, unfortunately 🙁

This is a planned litter of purebred Maine Coons with pedigree and health tested parents. Many people want this kind of cat, so finding homes for them will not be a problem. In the long run I believe this will increase the status of cats and decrease the amount of homeless cats.
