Thank you for showing and sharing your experience. I just made a new save folder called "The Right Way." I suddenly have a lot of watches to service. The ones I thought I'd already serviced! This is true KZbin gold. Keep 'em coming.

Thought this video is fantastic, easy explanation to follow, straight on problem solving. It has everything, thank you! Only thing I also wanted to see (now I'm spoiled) is adjustment of endshake barrel bridge/main plate to barrel arbor ;)

Thanks for this one. I was looking for the best way to polish pivots without a Jacot tool. And how to deal with sideshake. Thanks much. Good stuff. I hope you start posting again.

Thanks a lot for the instructive video. I took a lot of notes about what to check on a barrel. A couple of questions if possible: 1. what is the name of the tool you used to manual polish the barrel arbor? 2. You detected side shake between the barrel arbor and the barrel. Then you fixed the side shake of the barrel in the main plate and bridge. Does that fix also the side shake of the barrel or should it be fixed in the same way? Many thanks in advance Fabrizio

Diamond pastes work great for polishing but I've heard the advice to not use them on brass, else grit can get embedded in brass and quickly wear away whatever brass contacts, in this case the arbor. WDYT? Given that the tool (pegwood) is softer than brass, maybe this is unlikely to happen? Thank you!

Great video. Do you repair the barrel and lid the same way, or do you just buy a new one?

Thanks Alex. Is the side and end shake of the barrel a result of the polishing to the arbor and the barrel?
@watchrepairtutorials2 жыл бұрын
It certainly could be if the polishing was to aggressive. Usually wear between the arbor and barrel is caused by grit mixed with excessive lubrication, which attracts dirt like a magnet, grinding away at the barrel holes when the mainspring is wound. Excessive end shake in the barrel is most often the result of the barrel lid or bottom ring bent

Amazing tips Alex. This a silly question. Can we use toothpaste or metal polish instead of the compound you are using on the flattened toothpick? Also, I never thought of using a domed punch to make holes smaller. I use a small punch around the hole. This way it will be more accurate and leave no marks.

You want to be careful of the grit size so you don’t open it up to much. I think the diamond paste I use is about 50000 grit so it’s pretty fine. I sometimes also us Polinum. I always have used the domed punches. It was just the way I was taught.

Great video! I’m learning so much for your videos that I’ve decided to tackle one of these movements, myself. I’m sure I’m in over my head but I love a challenge. I’ve disassembled the movement and I’m in the process of cleaning everything, the pivots are pretty dirty. I’ve taken a bunch of pictures as I go but I messed up and didn’t take any photos of how the mainspring was installed. When I finally get my mainspring winder, I’m afraid I won’t know how to install the spring. Do you have any videos of you removing or installing a mainspring on the 917 or something similar? I still need to clean the balance jewels and I really don’t want to fuck up this movement. I’m hoping to put it in a wristwatch case for myself when it’s done. Also, in the part of the video where you are polishing the mainspring barrel pivot, is that a piece of rubber that is screwed onto the end of your rotary tool arbor, or is it peg wood with polishing compound on it? Thanks for the great videos!

Thanks Alex, full of great tips! How much of a difference does this level of polishing make?

Hi sr could you show us how can you fix the endshake of barrel in 7750
@thewatchsmith27732 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty much the same. Just make sure the barrel is not touching the bridge or main plate. Are you having an amplitude issue?

Hi Alex I am fault finding a Seiko 6309a. The mainspring barrel hole is worn and it's causing it to jam up. On closer inspection of the hole it looks like it's worn, out of round. The metal has worn out of round not spread How would I Bush this hole keeping it central.
@watchrepairtutorials Жыл бұрын
Well Vincent, that’s a serious question and it is not gonna be answered in this response because it’s involved and requires tons of explanation. I’m planning on doing some bashing videos on my other channel but in the meantime, I would seriously consider getting a new mainspring barrel.

Is it possible to replace mainspring in a barrel that says do not open?
@watchrepairtutorials2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. If the seam is on the side of the barrel you can use a razor blade it open it
