Penguin Random House published a self-serving memoire by the doctor who caused all those problems a few years ago (vague and understated language to evade comment flaggers). They published Prince Harry's Waaagh. They issued censored editions of Roald Dahl's classic kids' books and only backtracked when Queen Camilla proudly read the originals aloud at a charity event. All the publishers release outrageous material, but Penguin Random House is the worst offender. They're the Disney of the literary world.

As a Christian author who wants to write SF, Fantasy, Horror.. I would really like to know how you market your books independently. Obviously, the channel helps a great deal, but is there any advice that you could give?
@liljenborg25174 күн бұрын
Especially because Christian publishers are A) owned by the Big Four and are currently dealing with pressure from above to play along with the sexual immorality agenda, but especially B) Cristian publishers won’t touch sci-fi or fantasy with a thirty-nine-and-a-half-foot pole. The closest Christian publishers will get to Sci-if is Left Behind. And these days, they won’t even look at Narnia wannabes, because if there is any magic in the book at all, they fear the “Harry Potter is Satanic” crowd who have this allergy to anything remotely imaginative. The closest they will get to fantasy is This Present Darkness (and only then if your name is Peretti and he’s retired).

I'd like to know too. In Brandon Sanderson's Writing Excuses podcast, they would often talk about the business side of writing, with publishing and marketing and stuff. Maybe you could make a video about your experiences breaking into the market?
@Sealwithwificonnection4 күн бұрын
I don't want to sound like a pessimist but these are my two cents from what I've seen from indie authors (as someone who also wants to independently publish something of my own). I really thinks it comes down to two things, both not mutually exclusive: marketing budget and sheer talent/resonance with an audience. A good marketing budget could potentially make a nice pipeline of taking a good story and selling it to somebody who doesn't know you. On the other hand, I think making a really , really, good book will spread naturally by word of mouth if it only sells like 30, for example. From what I can tell, obviously a combination of those two things could make a story really stand out. Piranesi is an example for me where I discovered it through word of mouth despite it winning an award. And it's a pretty damn good book. I think the best we can do is maybe support each other in the indie space and the works that are genuinely good, we promote them amongst other SF/F fans.
@MarkWatneyWasHere4 күн бұрын
Adding my voice to this. How does one even get an audience when self-publishing? Obviously, having a marketing budget would be idea, but isn't realistic to the average joe, and hoping that your work is good enough to have a domino effect through word of mouth isn't exactly consistent
@richmountain11284 күн бұрын
You can even post them for free on sites like AO3, which is mostly fanfiction but also supports original content too.

Hello again Jon. My agent turned down a $3 Million offer from Simon & Schuster because it would have required us to relinquish all future rights to my books. I actually spent decades building a game world for TSR. But since WotC bought D&D and ruined it that plan evaporated. Just to reiterate I am a straight, white, religious male with a traditional publishing contract.

Good you didn't sell them the rights. Disney shelved them, and wrote their own sequels, and now probably no one will ever get to see the original ideas.

7:20 This manga is actually published by Seven Seas, they publish a massive amount of BL manga, they also publish a lot of manga I buy. But all this BL manga is actually read by Fugoshi, these are single women who love reading stories about gay male relationships. When I first heard that I was kind of shocked, I thought it would have been gay men who read these stories. Because the opposite is not the case, there’s no large male readership of Yuri manga, which is female relationships.
@Cowboycomando544 күн бұрын
At least Asian BL and Yuri publishers don't try to hide what they are actually buying and selling, unlike here in the west. Plus they are definitely not marketed or intended for children.

@ No, each manga comes with an age rating, it’s very clear on Seven Seas manga, “Teen”, “Older Teen”, “Older Teen 16+”, “Older Teen 17+” and then “Mature” is the highest rating. And yes everything is in clear genre, this is BL and marketed that way, you’re not going to find this content in a mainstream Shonen, but that’s exactly what American comics does, they shove everything into the same line of comics. And this is why manga is successful & comics aren’t.
