Maybe someday we'll have the answer to my perennial question: why, when given the choice between demonstrable facts versus a completely false, barely plausible conspiracy theory, do so many working class people choose the conspiracy theory? Is it because the truth is too boring and they are drawn to the exciting improbability of fiction? I find it baffling. I live in a working class neighborhood and worked at an entry level office job for 17 years before retirement, where every coworker was a Trump supporter. I am surrounded by Trump supporters in my life, and their lack of reasoning ability is staggering. I am very careful in conversations with them because if I use a word outside their personal vocabulary, they look at me suspiciously. I feel safer 'dumbing down' and pretending to be one of them.

@realchris I am so honored to have your reply, Chris! It is like an autograph to your book, which I just bought and have on my bedside table to read some every night before sleep. The unfolding tapestry of your life journey, and the positive conclusions you've arrived at, set a calming and hopeful mood for my mind to "sleep on". I'm at the end of chpt.2 and will take to heart the suggestions to "spend more time solving than complaining", and "step forward and lean into a problem." I'm tempted to fall into ageism, thinking that your book is meant only for young people, and that it's too late for a 72 y/o who needed this instruction 50 years ago. For the most part, this is true. But I need to make some big changes in my life currently, and I have high expectations that your book's message will be exactly what I need to hear at this critical time. Thank you for writing it.

It's because a lot of these people were raised with a rigid and infallible worldview where everything was wrapped up with a neat little bow instead of the reality of the world being more chaotic and fluid. Instead of embracing the chaos and being curious they panic and slink to whatever comfort they can find, and oftentimes it's some bullshit peddlers telling them that some great cabal or some dumbshit is trying to destroy their made up world. Simple but bullshit solutions for complicated questions with complicated answers.

In the whole world AI is used for diagnosis, but in practice a human doctor must manually confirm the decision the AI made. In its very nature, modern AI is very imprecise. "But I think he will be incredible for the country in many ways" - When there’s a “but” at the start of a sentence, it suggests doubt. So, Altman might just be avoiding speaking honestly about Musk because he’s worried that criticizing Musk could harm his fundraising efforts. “I think…” - Yes, Altman’s thoughts is shaped by his personal bias, fear, and opinion, rather than by any real scientific research or objective evidence that Musk will be any good. “…..be incredible for the country in many ways” -Can Altman specify some of the ways he thinks Musk will benefit the country? So far, there have been new reported that Tesla has caused more environmental damages than his company has claimed to do save the environment. Not paying one's fair share of taxes isn’t exactly one of those “incredible things for the country” Is gutting social benefits and increasing taxes on the middle class to pay for his tax-cut is “incredible thing for the country”? Buying Trump’s election? Lying and making false promises about his products? How are these “incredible” for the country? As for the “Einstein” or “smartest man on the planet” claim-Musk doesn’t seem to know enough physics or engineering to make his rockets work properly, yet he continues to give uneducated medical advice. I know Einstein himself never called himself the smartest man on the planet. So Altman, Lex Fridman, Rogan and all of the boot-lickers can stop licking.
