This hairstyle can go by many names: locs, dreadlocks, or dreads. Sometimes the size can be specified even further to be called Sisterlocks, Microlocs, or small locs. Either way, I love locked hair and the variety of shapes and sizes that can come in. On this channel, you'll see (1) my daughter's Sisterlocks, (2) my DIY Microlocs turned small locs, and (3) assorted 'How To' videos. I hope you enjoy and find value in my content.
I've been told that my locs with relaxed ends resemble the popular faux locs commonly referred to as boho locs, butterfly locs, or goddess locs. Let me know what you think in the comment section below.

I wouldn’t do it but it’s pretty. A lot of folks like the aesthetic of curly or open ends. They look like goddess locs.

You have REAL “boho locs” with the curly ends. We see them in extension form all the time. I understand that it’s a lot of work but it’s a brilliant idea for those who are up for the challenge.

Thank you for sharing this. My thoughts: though the "relaxed ends with locs" is a potential style that one can choose to do, as you have beautifully demonstrated; for me, if my reasoning behind wanting to relax my hair first before having the locs is because of preconceived notions and socially constructed ideologies that "longer hair = more beautiful" or "longer hair = more feminine", then I would want to do some internal & mental work on that socially constructed ideology first, and learn to love myself and appreciate my self fully, no matter the hair pattern or hair length, especially, as I proceed through my loc journey. This is a practice that I've gone through in my loc journey, especially as media and social definitions arise in discussion. I hope you are able to understand. Thank you.

This is the exact type of video I was looking for. I have been relaxed almost a year, and I have been considering starting micro locs in the future. My hair is about bra-strap length, and I don't want to cut it off and completely start over. It's nice to know this is an option for me. 😊

I locd my own hair. I’m all natural haven’t permed my hair in 15 years. I started mine with two strand twist. My ends are still curly and the rest of my loc is fully locd. I been locd a year and a half now. I love my locs. You don’t have to perm your hair.

I agree with you Bindi, I wouldn't relax my hair if the long term goal was to loc it, I think that it is beautiful on you, but you take very good care of both your textures. I transitioned my hair before and I just did not have the patience for two textures so I know I wouldn't be able to maintain it. Love your channel Bindi, I look forward to watching your hair continue to mature.

you’ve managed to curate a look with the relaxed ends and we’re feeling it! what if someone were to texturize the ends of their loose hair and leave the other half natural from the roots for locs? I think it could work...

@@Bindi_Marc literally I have that type of locs where my roots and parts of the middle are loc and the rest of my hair is loose from the middle to end. I only just came across you channel today, as I was looking to see if anyone had a similar locs to mine, as mine has been 2 months loc. I love your locs and it definitely makes me feel to continue this journey with mine. But yes there is a lot of maintenance with my loose ends, which I never had to do before when I had tradional locs 6 years ago.

I've done this before. It's a really effective method for not maintaining the length of your hair during your locking process but it also helps to bud the hair faster too. Something about having the cuticles of your strands stripped from relaxing makes them dry enough to tangle up quickly. Years ago when I got frustrated with my hair I texturized it then decided to loc up because having loose straight-ish damaged hair is not what I ultimately wanted for my hair. My 4c hair shrinks up A LOT but when I had my locs I was amazed how long they managed to stay and grow. And yes they were full and healthy. This is all coming from a girl who raised as a child with very long natural dreadlocks so I already knew what I was pretty much getting myself into. I was far from disappointed. Do what best works for you. I prefer long hair because it shapes my face. The first time around I had locs they would regardless the length they were. I like this idea for starter locs. But that's just me. My Rastafarian parents would certainly disagree with the ethics but it's my happiness over theirs.

I say no, don’t relax unless there’s time, patience, and perseverance. If there’s inches or a foot of natural hair then most already know how to take care of it and most know how to stretch the natural hair as well. Locs are easy until they are not. To add relaxed ends to that would be a trial only the most dedicated could handle (ie Bindi). Bindi talked about trying this with her daughter’s locs: loc up a few inches at the roots and leave the ends out. Stretch and style the ends as desired.

oooh interesting. I hadn't considered leaving the ends loose and natural especially on more coily hair but that might be an option for some, for sure.

I locked my hair with relaxed ends. I had 1 to 1.5 inches of new growth. I was fine for about 3 months of interlocking. When I felt I had enough growth, I cut the relaxed ends. It didn’t take anything away from the locs.

Your hair is gorgeous... I started my loc journey about a month ago and I've left about four to five inches of my hair on braided... My natural hair is soft and curly and that is the look I was going for at the end of my loc...also my hair is very thin so the curls give me a much fuller look. So I was happy to find at least one person out there maintaining 2 textures of hair. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Here are my thoughts on relaxing your hair before locking. I don't think most people have the skill set necessary to do it. I think it only works if you already have a lot of knowledge on how to manage relaxed hair healthily and if you already know your hair well . Both of which were the case when it comes to you, Joyce. I think it would also help if you have a knowledge of your natural hair. If we're being honest, I think most black women lack that knowledge. (Unless you grew up in a household that had healthy hair practices or you have sought out healthy hair practices yourself.) All that to say, if you have that knowledge, I think you can do it. But don't kid yourself, if you don't.

It's an interesting idea but I can't say that I would recommend it. Relaxing solely to be able to Loc with length seems counterproductive to the overall goal. But hey, it can be another "technique" used to achieve Locs. Do you plan to trim your ends as your Locs mature?

Great conversation as usual. I never thought about. I guess because I did a big chop before i started my locs. I also dont know anyone personally who has done that. I do however know people who had relaxed hair and clipped the permed ends as their locs mature.

Thank you for putting my fears to rest. I've spent most of my life with either relaxed or braided hair and now that injuries have gotten the best of me, I have been looking into starting a loc journey. Currently i have part natural, but mostly still relaxed hair and was wondering if it was even possible to hold on with out doing the big chop. Thank you for answering my questions.

See, I have 64 locs at six months in and tho some of my locs are blunted, I've always loved the thought of natural goddess locs, as in loose curls at the ends. My hair is 4a/4b and I dont want to do the extra effort to keep them intact right now so I've decided that, if anything, I'll just wait until they're matured THEN comb out the ends. Now I'm thinking that I could texturized them as well, if and when do. I haven't applied chemicals to my hair since 2010 and haven't applied heat since 2017.

I think it's counterproductive and if her natural hair is already tightly coiled then her hair will be prone to snapping where yhe coils meet the relaxed portion.
@byebyeworldx.
@byebyeworldx. 4 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if that might depend on other factors.. I have very thick and tightly coiled hair, relaxing since age 12 and stopped age 34.. I can't say I've been the best at care especially after having kids😹 but I never experienced the snapping you mention.. I think that is more common if the hair is fine.. I am locking now (started on my relaxed hair) for 6 months too and so far the transition is smooth!

😶 there's most certainly a complex. the beauty of locs is that it showcases our kinky, african hair texture. it demonstrates ethnic pride. to process the hair to achieve 'looser/straighter' ends completely defies the point of locs. it says everything BUT 'black pride'.
