Sean Connery passed away today. For me, Sean Connery is the coolest actor of all time. I'm dedicating this beautiful version of Auld Lang Syne to him. He was honored at the Kennedy Center in 1999 and Mari Campbell sang this song in Scots for him. So Sir Sean, bye for noo. Hae a guid journey! ♥

Definitely the best version, I ever heard. No wonder, the producers have chosen her for the Sex and the City version, which is a bit more commercialized and less traditional for the US market, but still very good. Happy 2020!

I’m not even Scottish or Irish (not sure where this is from, sorry) but this brought me to tears. To see everyone in unison singing and being happy and recalling beautiful fond memories. Really brings life and the importance of unity and love/kindness into perspective.

+The Wise One Except that English is related to Gaelic. They're both Indo-European languages. ;-) Of course, Greek, Armenian and Hindi have a similar relationship to both, with a common ancestor for all of them around 5000-6000 years ago. You could argue a somewhat closer relationship for English and Gaelic, since both have historically had heavy borrowing of words from the Romance languages. But that doesn't really have much effect on the basic family tree.

A lovely song, especially in the older version (performed here). A missunderstanding in the lyrics of the chorus last word first line "my jove". Should be "Jo" which means "dear" in old scots. "Jove" is the god of thunder in the old roman mythology, as in the slightly archaic and upper class english "by Jove".

Beautifully sung. This is the second Scots version I've heard sung; i.e. as per the original song penned by Robert Burns (as per what I've read on the net over the years, with Wikipedia giving the lyrics of the original version). However, the stanza sung by the elderly lady and the young man, I've heard for the first time. It's that part in Gaellic? And could anybody translate it please?
@Windygowl
@Windygowl Жыл бұрын
Sounds like it .. I don’t speak Gaelic but I I expect what they are singing is translated to the english words 😂 As I understand it this is, loosely, the lesser sung traditional version though I’m not sure it had so many fractions. The choir hold it all together beautifully 💜

Auld Lang Syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind ? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne* ? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my jo (or my dear), for auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. We twa hae run about the braes, and pu’d the gowans fine ; But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit, sin auld lang syne. CHORUS We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn, frae morning sun till dine ; But seas between us braid hae roar’d sin auld lang syne. CHORUS And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere ! and gie's a hand o’ thine ! And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught, for auld lang syne. CORO
