Many travelers in Norway are familiar with the Mardalsfossen waterfall from below the Eikesdalen Valley. But not many have made the trip up to Lake Mardalstjønna, from where the waterfall crashes down.
Loading the kayaks onto the roof of our Tesla electric car, we set off on an adventure to explore a new road for us, walk to the Mardalsfossen waterfall along Lake Mardalstjønna and kayak on the glacial blue lake Nedste Mardalsvatnet.
To get to the Sandgrovbotnvegen road leading up, you must first go along the E136 highway, and then turn off near the Stuguflåtbrua bridge. This is where the ascent to the Sandgrovbotn - Mardalsbotn region begins. What's nice is that the road is free. At first asphalt, and then it turns into a very high-quality gravel road.
Along the way, you will meet hydroelectric dams, sheep, crystal clear lakes and streams, as well as an ever-changing mountain panorama. The length of the road from the beginning of the ascent to the farthest point of Lake Nedste Mardalsvatnet is 30 kilometers.
Near the road, there are small parking lots from where hiking trails begin. One of these trails leads to the Mardalsfossen waterfall.
Mardalsfossen is a cascading waterfall, one of the highest in Europe, its height is 655 meters, and the free fall of water is 297 meters. And it looks really elegant. But the waterfall was "tamed" by people. During the summer tourist season from June 20 to August 20, water is released through the waterfall. At other times, the water is channeled through a hydroelectric power plant and the waterfall drastically loses some of its appeal. Keep this in mind when planning your trip.
By the way, Mardalsfossen flows out of the hanging valley, and before visiting it, we were not familiar with this term. It turned out that such valleys often have a glacial origin, and were formed as a result of the deepening of the main valley by a glacier. That is, to put it simply, the bottom of the hanging valley ends with a ledge to the bottom of the larger main valley. And if there is a river or a lake above, then a waterfall is formed.
Further, our path lay to the lake Nedste Mardalsvatnet, where we planned to go kayaking on glacial water before sunset. Although the water is very cold, it is a special pleasure to paddle on the water of such a rich blue color, surrounded by mountain snow peaks. And the snow here does not melt even in July.
By the way, from the edge of Lake Nedste Mardalsvatnet, there is a path to the place from where a new perspective opens up on both cascades of the Mardalsfossen waterfall. We recommend taking a walk!
The way back to the valley was in the cozy rays of sunset and in the silence of the mountains, which was broken only by sheep bells. In places where there is no telephone connection and there are few tourists, you really relax and return to the valley as a renewed person.
In this video, we invite you to spend one sunny July day with us in the mountainous region of Sandgrovebotn - Mardalsbotn. And also admire the graceful Mardalsfossen waterfall and the views that change at every turn of the road. And of course, ride on our favorite orange kayaks!
