First of all - big congrats on the new sails, this is awesome, but something isn’t quite right with your main. Either boom is too low, or sail didn’t cut properly, but I know for sure your clew is way too high, it should be laying on the boom, not flying in the air. Talk to your sailmaker, they will advise how to fix it. Best of luck, your channel is amongst my favourites. 21:00
@Tomm9y3 ай бұрын
I agree, the clew is about 9" too high. Part of this may be related to the in mast furling, the cloth used and seams. I would measure the length of the luff from masthead & halyard eye & top of the sail, to the clew. There was no twist in the main as it was flying, so I would expect it to be even higher in stronger winds. It may not seem much to lose some height from the foot of the sail, but this is an important part of the sail. It helps create drive in combination with the jib/genoa when going upwind & reaching, being low down in the sail the power is created with less impact on healing as the centre of effort is lower, that is also important when going downwind.

Was the main really correct size? Looked a bit of or was the outhal not tighten? Fair winds
@donkinzer57183 ай бұрын
I suspect that your boom is supposed to be angled up slightly rather than being perpendicular to the mast. On my Selden in-mast furler, the boom is specified to be about 7 degrees up from perpendicular. When fully unfurled, the foot of my main is roughly parallel to the boom. Check with the manufacturer of your mast to see what they have to say about that. Precision Sails may have some advice on the topic, too.
@LoanwordEggcorn3 ай бұрын
What's the reason for the boom to be tilted up? Clear the dodger/bimini?
@peterhagen72582 ай бұрын
I think there was a measurement or manufacturing error. Look at T=02:12 vs. T=20:49. The sail is not the right shape. Yes, because of the roller-furling main, the clew needs to be a little higher than the tack so, when rolled up, the foot will spiral up & not be so bulky in the mast. But that is way too high. The leech looks to be 2 to 3 feet too short! For now, ease the vang & trim in the outhaul. P.S. You probably ought to have taken dimensions on and of the boat, not just of the old sails. I can't imagine stretching that old jib or main out straight enough on the grass to get good dimensions.

I think Eva was trying to tell you something. Electric winch and bow thruster packing up in one day?? I think she wants to go sailing more often. All this sitting around in marinas is not good enough. Even if it is in a good cause. However, she will probably get over her frustration if you quickly finish her project!
@jackdbur3 ай бұрын
You should look into Soft Starters for the winches & bow thruster! Their not that expensive and cut down the huge start currents.
@acampbell1983 ай бұрын
@@jackdbur That made me think about this boat's history, can't recall the exact nature of what happened to her though...did she take on water? Formerly wet and now corroded wire maybe?? Dauntless was only under water a few hours and Ty wound up pulling all of the wiring out due to corrosion. I'm no electrician though, who knows.

Re the winch tripping the breaker, well these breakers are designed to accept the high inrush current as a motor starts but trip if that high current continues. The way you were using the winch with running in short cycles to control the speed raising the headsail means the breaker is seeing almost constant inrush and will do what it's designed to do and trip.

I couldn't see many ticklers on the genoa except for 3 horizontal ones. You need some up the luff so you can properly set the position of the blocks for the genoa sheets (control the twist). This will affect your sail trim.

I just wanted to say from people like us who have and had similar dreams, besides the most recent health issues I had/have the biggest part my husband and I love about you guys is how well your paw-friendly kids are so well adapted to boat life, and thats because of you guys. We have 4 dogs (labs) and in AK it was fine but in many other areas lime boat life that will be a challenge but its a challenge that we will figure out because we WILL have our next adventure of off-grid life on the water. Keep the "Let's" way of life going and we look forward to seeing your success in all you do. 🩷🙏

On my Selden in-mast furling the foot is parallel to the boom and the clew is only a few centimeters above the boom. Your clew seems to be about 40 centimeters above the boom which not only gives away sail area but also makes it aerodynamically less efficient. Sorry guys but that mainsail is not cut correctly. Whatever, it was nice to see you on the water again.

Completely off subject of your video but...in episode 75 you documented an accident that happened to your friends Ianna (sp) and Andre from Sailing Naida. I stumbled on their channel while researching how to replace my cutlass bearing (they ingeniously did theirs in the water). Of course I started watching a few of their videos and noticed they just stopped suddenly but I was reminded of your episode by comments on their last video and finally put two and two together. A few have asked recently in the comments on their last video (as recently as a month ago) what happened. Wondering if you all have kept up with them and if you know how they are doing? Hoping they are doing well. Congrats on the new sails, they look great!

Nice job, a bit odd to do that exchange at sea but a very good practice. One question is why didn’t you ad some more sail at the lower aft boom. Now it looks weird, like wrong / short cut sail. Personally I like to sail with a ( losse broek , in Dutch) meaning the sail does only have a line attached at the aft end of the boom. It makes trimming more easy. But still I think the sail is a bit cut short.
