@ExpeditionEvans hey gang, throw a camera on the hard-top, pointed up at the sails, with a feed to the console. Save the neck strain, walk, time away from helm, availability, etc...have peace of mind glancing at the sails wherever you have monitors. (I'm nowhere near an expert, but am assuming this would be available for ~$ to be worth it🤷🏼,?) Love your channel and the kindness you show our friends 🐾

The fact that you guys take the time and effort to figure the impact on your marriage of these side trips, speaks volumes to the type of people you are. Kudos to you both. Incidentally, this Reno may be taking longer than you hoped, but I am LOVING this whole upgrade process. I’m not at all disappointed. It’s fun, and I am eating up both channels as you dive into, and out of, the weeds. You two are a treat to watch and listen to.

Hey guys. I have been around since you bought the boat and really have enjoyed watching you. I watch many sailing videos and I think your boat is the best looking of all. Jade is an amazing woman! Every episode was so amazing watch her restore that wrecked boat. I could not believe how hard she worked. Any of you that are reading this and haven't seen from the beginning need to go watch Jade and Brett work on this boat. I think the new dodger is beautiful. It is really is a perfect style for that boat and at first I hated that color until Jade got through mixing and now I love it. Looking forward till you are sailing again.

Hi, just a suggestion but a wide angle camera strategically placed with a monitor in the cockpit might replace the need for a window. It would also stop the need to poke your head out when the weather turns sporty.

You guys getting your paint color together reminds me of a color that was on a 2004 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT. The color was called Mystichrome. In the sun I think it had a bit more purple than you guys were going for. Good idea on why you were choosing your color selection though wanting it to match up with the different bodies of water.

Nice!!! With all that power add a camera looking at the sails and a monitor on deck. Activate both of them with a momentary push button switch so that it is not drawing power all the time. Get some backup containers of the paint. Will the existing wiring support the big increase in current/voltage. Also, keep your old inverter as a backup in case the main one goes south. Maybe add some terminals where the main inverter will be so that you can just flip a switch. Not sure as to what the stats are on the inverters.

It’s interesting watching you take a boat show boat and make a real ocean passage boat out of it. I did the same thing 20 years ago with a 461. There’s so much that can be said about what an ocean going sailboat should be built like and what it should have. I found that the 461 did everything well. it was fast as hell and once I hardened it up with the proper hardware and gear it was a great live-aboard. And it handled weather beautifully. I was in three named storms. Boat was just. Have fun. I’m 77 now and although in good health, I spend most of my time traveling around the world on my motorcycle now. Less goes wrong! Plus, I was sick for three days every time we sit out on a new leg. I don’t get sick on the motorcycle. Have fun. Not everyone can do what you’re doing. Having nothing to do with money or inclination. Just skill.

Not too much in the weeds. Great quick explanation of the shaded cells. The best way I have thought of it is a shaded cell is like a hole in the hose and your power flows backwards into the hole without the cell pushing power forward to your batteries. THe diodes prevent the power from flowing backwards to the shaded cell (hole).

Great and ambitious job guys. I just want to inform you about using carbon in structure like chainplates which is an electrical path in a lightning strike. A nearby Schoning Cat was struck by lightning and all the carbon points of contact with metal have deformed, so pure carbon is ok, sort of, but all needs to be replaced ($$$). Brett, you may have noticed on aircraft lightning protection is built into the very outer (final) layer of composites. So keep all the metal to a minimum. When you think you need bracing or toughness consider using Kevlar, it compliments carbon really well, plus it helps with vibrations something some open racing yachts are starting to realize as carbon is brittle but super strong.

We put 3 of the 200w BougeRV CIGS panels on the roof of the pilothouse of our motorboat. We will see what they are like 6 six months baking in the sun of southern France. As for the color of your Bimini hardtop I would suggest although probably too late, the color of Jade’s water bottle. I have found that I want to be seen not blend in. This is for safety not esthetic reasons but that red is almost a Japanese red and very pleasing.

You can add paint to epoxy to make marbled glossy colors like the one Jade made with the nail paint. There's a lot of KZbinrs who make fake marble countertops and shower enclosures with this method. It's beautiful, quick, cheap, easy, lightweight.

Making quality solar roofs that are efficient, long lasting and esthetically pleasing is nearly impossible for the DIY'r. Almost anything on a boat is easier to create than a large surface area covered in cells. Those are beautiful panels, you chose wisely. The color of paint looks amazing from where I sit. Thanks for the video.

Making your own solar panels does sound a bit like trying to reinvent the wheel, but in the end you do whatever floats your boat - which seems oddly appropriate in your case. Your attention to detail is amazing, I'm not sure I could do what you are doing. Eva is going to look amazing, that seems certain.

You can just wrap it with cheap regular vinyl film wrap, like what's used on car wraps, to cover your amateur non-prepreg carbon fiber part. Then it's waterproof, lightweight, and beautiful. Super easy fix and every color you could ever imagine, glossy or matte or whatever you please just like car wraps.

With all of the new electricity you are generating maybe you should look into a small camera and monitor system to "see through" the new hard top. Rear view mirrors on cars are giving way to camera/monitor systems, no reason you couldn't mount a forward/upward facing camera on the top/rear of your new hard top and then feed/stream the video to a tablet/monitor that you can affix to the roof on front of your helm, the result would be similar to looking up through a window to monitor your sails. Just a thought. Another great episode!
@katarzynalubinska98643 ай бұрын
Turn the solar panels!!! We have these cigs test everything before you mount it you may find that you want to run the panels especially the 200 watt long ways... the way that the diodes work does not really match up with what bouge has on their site you will want the primary Shadow to be long ways on the panel not down the middle..
@MonkPetite3 ай бұрын
Glad to see you make the “obstruction “ light weight. One of the biggest mistakes made by many. If you like it as a wind trap you will experience. But obviously a standard fabric and frame type may hinder also. The solar is super nice. Love to see that work for you. One tip .. just don’t DIY the lithium battery system. Too many yachts burned down even in the middle of the sea with dead following. Buy approved battery’s and so approved BMS systems. Maybe you self and the insurance happy

Hey you guys, I just put 2000 watts on my cloth bimini. It's 4 flex panels. 2 of the 500 watt panels for something like $245 per pair. AmazonBut I guess free is better. I have outfitted both of my boats the same way, except I did my smaller one, 37 C and C, with about 2300 watts. My 42 has 2000 w for house batteries, and another 200 for engine. Don't forget, 2000 watts is about 180 amps, so you'll need more charge control than u had before

Hey guys, you probably already know this but just in case... When dealing with the hologram type paints or even micro-flake there can be significant differences in the outcome depending on the primer or backing paint color. May I recommend using a scrap of material and primer to finalize your color selection or the most awesome outcome? BTW - excellent choice.

Love the colour. So 70% output on the 100 Watt panel, what time of day and approximate sun angle did you have. If that is a typical output you should still have double your original solar capacity, nice.
@BillJohnston-y7o3 ай бұрын
Almost never will they bring in more than they're rated. But some panels are better than others. Soft panels are usually not as eff, they heat up more, you lose watts because of that and they don't last as long. Keep your expectations lower. They do weigh less which is a good thing though. The hardtop should be awesome, can't wait to see it.

Therefore I would highly suggest to go with a plain simple color without these effects to have an easy possibility to repaint/ repair small spots option.

So you're going for an iridescent color. Literally means that a mix of different colors show themselves through different angles and illuminations. And in this case those colors will be greens and blues. Sounds fitting and I like it. Some people throw in purples and pinks and also sometimes just a dash or hint of reds and yellows and golds with the greens and blues to help break up the colors and give contrast a little more when going for an iridescent color if the dominate colors are greens and blues. Could think of it as a project for later when maybe updating things again in the future if you happen to need to or want to. Reds, yellows, and golds would give a hint toward the sun on the ocean surface. Probably got the artist's mind swimming in ideas now lol.
