I have an Aurora 88 black & gold, and a Talentum; both light and wonderful toothy pens. The grip and the fact that it´s a piston pen is the only thing that´s Aurora-like about the Majohn. I enjoyed this review; thanks! If I had to get rid of all but 5 pens, the Aurora 88 would be one that stays.

Aurora’s are so expensive and I’m not sure that they’re worth the additional coin. You can get a Pilot Custom 823 for a lot less money but with an equivalent quality factor and writing experience. That being said, I do love my Aurora Talentum with a B nib. It is an amazing pen, the build quality is high and the broad nib is juicy, wet and glorious. It’s so good I’m thinking about buying an Aurora 88 but desperately trying to justify the £400+ price tag. My Majohn T5 hasn’t arrived yet and I’m hoping it will help me make the decision on whether it’s worth pulling the trigger on the real deal.

As of the day this video posted, St Penpps does not have the T5 in their store. At any rate, I found one at a different vendor for a lower price and with an EF (0.38 mm) nib option, which I ordered about two weeks ago and which is scheduled to arrive Monday (according to USPS Informed Delivery). So, I'm looking forward to that arriving day after tomorrow!

@@InkquiringMinds Generally the vendors offering the pen models with #6 nibs are putting non-Majohn/Moonman nibs on them, most often Kaigelu EF nibs. I can only surmise that Majohn doesn't make EF nibs in the #6 size. It's been that way at least a couple of years that I know of that I have been buying models like the T1 and T2 with EF nibs.

An update... It finally arrived! First it was supposed to have an EF nib, then I was told it would be a M nib. It arrived today with a F nib. The pen is well made. I can see why you like this pen. I am baffled why the piston does not extend to the section. Certainly this could have been done. I have dipped the nib and it ses to write very smoothly. It even does reverse writing, although a bit scratchy. Thanks you your review and patience with me.

Thanks for the review. I have a T5 for some weeks now and I like it. My pen came with a "Moonman" F-nib. James (JG3) reviewed a version with a medium Moonman nib and he noticed that the nib on his pen has no breather hole and skips when writing. My nib has a breather hole and has absolutely no problems. Maybe they are using up the last stack of "Moonman" nibs until new "Majohn" nibs arrive and so it seems to be a lottery. I have mixed experiences with Moonman nibs. The M600 nibs are very nice, the T5 is good, the M800 were so bad I replaced them with Bock nibs and the M2 nib is ...hmm... acceptable.

I finally got an Aurora Optima and it is a beautifully made 1930's pen that Aurora still makes. The T5 is a modern sized version of the Optima. The T5 is 5 1/2 inches long closed. The Optima is 5" even. The T5's barrel is 3" from the tip of piston knob to the bottom of the ink window. The Optima is 2 5/8" over the same distance. The Moonman medium nib if you spend an hour or so making it wetter and polishing it until it becomes similar to a pilot nib for smoothness has become one of my favorite nibs. And the T5 has become my favorite writing pen. The Optima's feel in hand due to its materials and finish is fantastic. The T5's feel unposted as a writer is beautiful once you deal with the nib and is larger and more comfortable than the Optima. They are both great pens. I would recommend either.

Thanks for the review Doug… I have a couple Aurora Optima pens. One Limited Edition Flex from a few years ago and another Medium in Auroloid (aurora’s version of celluloid) Orange. They have superb fit and finish and in-house made 18k nibs and ebonite feeds. They are very smooth and balanced writers and are often in my rotation of regular carry pens. The Optima is not only lighter, but also smaller than the T5 so it is convenient as a daily cary in a pen sleeve or shirt pocket. The T5 appears to be about the size of your M800…. The Optima is between the size of a M400 and M600. The nibs have a wow factor and precision of writing with Pelikan nibs… but a little less smooth with a pleasant amount of feedback.

I love the critical comparison at the end. I have a hard time bringing myself to like a Chinese clone of a designer pen, simply because of the clone factor. The price points are appealing, but if I’m going for an inexpensive pen, I’d prefer one that still has its own charm, like many of the PenBBS offerings. I’m curious about that FWP ink though; would you have more luck with the shimmer if you eye dropper/syringe filled a pen? I use a lot of shimmering inks around the holidays, and I always have to move quick with my Diamines because the shimmering particulate resettles to the bottom in about 5 seconds after shaking the bottle.
@InkquiringMinds
@InkquiringMinds 2 жыл бұрын
I always ensure a shimmering ink is stirred up before I fill the pen. Then it is a matter of how well the shimmer can travel through the feed and how much ink the nib lays down. I know I've got plenty of the shimmer inside the T5, it is just not showing on the page.

I have 2 of these. I replaced both nibs with JoWo nibs and they are now in my daily writer collection. These pens are amazing for the money, even with the nib swap. It's not that there is anything wrong with the nibs, one occupies a Karas Decograph and the other went into my Asvine skeleton pen. I have 3 Auroras, a Mamba, a Minerali and a Talentum. The 88s both post extremely well (pelikan like) and are comfortable, but in truth I reach for the Majohn far more often. I have enjoyed mine, once I got the nib tuned. It was a M, and quite dry and hard-starting. Now it’s great. But I’ve not yet removed my nib and feed. When I attempted it at the beginning, it was so stuck that I assumed it was glued, and I had to quit to avoid damaging it. I’ll try it again the next time I clean and fill it. It is disappointing that you got nib-swapped by the retailer, but the calligraphy nib looks like a good writer. I’d planned to install a surplus PenBBS nib in mine. As to the Aurora, like you, I don’t think anyone’s really comparing the two pens seriously. I also have the unpopular opinion that Aurora’s visual design is itself pretty unoriginal, every detail a detail found on many other pens.

I'm sorry to hear that! Leaks are caused by air getting into the system. It is kind of like lifting a straw out of your drink with your finger on the top. When you let go, the liquid pours out. So, check to make sure the feed and the nib are pushed all the way into the section and that the piston mechanism is tight.

@@InkquiringMinds I took a chance on a T5. It came with a horrid MoonMan nib. I attempted a swap with a Goulet JoWo nib, and while it physically fit, there was a huge problem. I tried re-seating the JoWo nib and feed several times, but I kept getting this pattern: dry dry dry dry skipping dry dry GUSHING WET WET wet wet wet dry dry dry... The MoonMan nib has its breather hole way up in the section, while the JoWo nib has the breather hole in the usual place near the tip. It's not a notch for rotational alignment on the MoonMan and it doesn't seem to mate with anything else. I wondered if the unusual breather hole location is actually doing something functional for the inside/outside pressure and I was getting "burps" followed by gushing ink? The JoWo nib otherwise felt worlds better, but my tentative conclusion is that this pen, at least the version I have, is not actually compatible with standard #6 nibs even though they physically fit. I put back the standard MoonMan nib and it still writes horridly but does NOT exhibit the same pattern. Is this wet/dry/wet/dry pattern suggestive of a particular mistake on my part attempting the nib swap, i.e., operator error?

Kanwrite has been making the same pen in resin for years. The quality is noway near the quality of an Aurora. But the Kanwrite heritage is a super writer and very wet (the are equip with a kanwrite nib and ebonite feed) Also for a fraction of the Aurora and in pletora of colors. Thanks for the video .

Thanks for the info! Where is the Kanwrite copy made? And why don't they get shat upon for making a copy?
@i.c.3157
@i.c.3157 2 жыл бұрын
my guess for the lack of "Schmidt" towards the Heritage is unlike the T5 it isn't an almost 1 to 1 copy, that and the Heritage also has a different cap band, a cap finial that's bulbous which is definitely unique if not a little ugly (IMO), a bottem finial that tapers a bit more, the metal ring being placed slightly higher, plus the bottem finial has to be removed to operate the filling system which isn't unique but it's different. You can also argue about the finer details like a different nib unit, different nib & feed design, an actual Ebonite feed, etc... Lasty, it could have something to do with people having more respect for Indian Artisans and their craft, compared to the mass produced Chinese products.

I have two. Neither came with Moonman nibs and I was fine with that. As many others have said, the Moonman nibs are hit and miss and are never spectacular. So the non branded generic is OK. I have one fine and one medium (which needed some micro mesh) and both are in regular use. I also have two Aurora Optimas from the 1990s. I have always considered these my best pens bar none. I often regret not buying more back then when I was single with extra "stupid" money. At the price, I think Moonman has another winner here. On a side note, I am still mad as heck at Kaweco for making me say Majohn.

A gajillion dollars? In some cases a Majohn copy could be justified as long as it works. Caligraphy nib will be a big improvement but I'd be interested to know how the original work. I saw an engraved silver from Aurora yesterday from the 90s. It was offered at a special price of $1,500 AUD.

That they would leave out the self-branded nibs is a shame. My X1 retractable, my only mood man with a self-branded nib, while being a mess of pointless gimmicks,writes so smooth that it really makes up for it, and that is with the EF. The writing experience is so effortless I stop caring about the fact that it is a gimmick, and only takes the worlds smallest cartidges. After all I really only got it to sign reciepts with.

As the judges on Simon Cowell's "Got Talent" shows sometimes say, "You don't know how great you are." I have a suspicion you do. Still, it doesn't matter to me. Your reviews are "Two Thumbs Up." Oops, I may have just violated a copyright by Siskel and Ebert. Anyway, your latest "Mad John" review has pushed me to the brink. I am torn between continuing to relish clicking on your reviews in the morning while having freshly brewed coffee and my homemade coffee cake vs. changing the screenplay entirely. Maybe, your fountain pen reviews would be even more fun if I watched them with two fingers of a single-malt scotch and a bit of dark chocolate.

This is the worst fountain pen of the year for me. Because the piston does not go all the way down, when you clean it, water will remain inside the barrel. you need to disassemble it every time you change ink because you cant push all the water out. for piston fillers, i will stick to my pilot 823 lamy 2000 and pelikans.
