That hit on the USC quarterback at about the 8 minute mark was brutal.Dang did he get popped!Pretty sure that would be a penalty today.Back then it was good football.

Yeah it was a huge hit. How else is a defender going to tackle a QB? Today they'd throw a flag for unnecessary roughness, but what's a guy to do? If they don't want QB's to get hit, then just make it one hand or two hand touch.

Wow USC whole team was NFL Future players Too many too list. X3 Hofrs Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lott , Anthony Munoz, & Dennis Smith Hof Snub not to mention the others that were decent. USC was stacked ! 1:05 Ronnie Lott int 2:44 Hoby Brenner went NFL 5:47 Lynn Cain went NFL I believe the Falcons 10:20 Dennis Smith gets burned on the Michigan Pass for TD So Rick Leach to MLB 👍 I didn't see Marcus Allen I must of missed something. I guess he was a freshman? Charles White made the NFL but never quite got it going some reason Until 1987 he finally showed up and dominated 1,374 yrds 11 TDS. Weird career

Anthony Munoz, Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott from this USC all made the NFL Hall of Fame. Charles White had a coke problem in the pros, but got his career going with the Rams in '87 like you said.

Yet they won 9 in a row after that including the #1 team in the nation in the Sugar bowl while SC was embarrassed by Arizona st. I see no controversy in a share.

@@RedElephantStampede Yeah, the SEC was crap. ANd USC was down to their 5th string center due to injuries, which played a major role in this loss. You got pounded in Tuscaloosa on national tv. And USC should have had a share of the 79 championship while we're at it.

@brian ... USC got hosed off the field by an UNRANKED Team. USC had a bye before the Arizona St game. They had 2 weeks to rest and prepare for Arizona St. USC's 3rd string Center played in much of Arizona St. game. Hey, injuries are part of the game. USC had a blatant fumble in the USC/ND game. McDonald fumbled. Everyone knows it. USC clearly fumbled here. It put USC up by 2 scores. It gave USC momentum. Alabama beat the sole Undefeated, Undisputed #1 team in the 1979 Sugar Bowl. A game that was arguably the National Title game for the 1978 season. Alabama won the 1978 AP Title hands down. The 1978 FWAA Grantland Rice Trophy, along with the 1978 NFF Macarthur Bowl are sitting there in the Paul Bryant Museaum as well. .. Alabama tied USC in the 1978 Coaches poll for the most FIRST place votes. USC won the 1978 UPI because they got "1" more SECOND place vote than Alabama.

@@Bamruff62 no, USC got the UPI vote bc they KICKED BAMA'S ASS ON THEIR HOME FIELD ON NATIONAL TV. And USC would have killed Penn State in 79 given the chance. PSU wasn't in the Big 10 yet (remember) and played nobody outside of Pitt that year. USC deserved the whole enchalada in 78 and a share of the title in 79. But we know how you tide folk like you make up lists of undeserved NCs...

Since Alabama beat Arkansas in The Sugar Bowl to complete a perfect 12 & 0 season and take the national championship, there was no ultimate fallout from this game's controversy. USC finished at 11-0-1 which was good enough for 2nd in ranking. Now, if Alabama would have lost, there may have been some contoversy if USC was ranked #1 based upon their somewhat stained Rose Bowl victory.

@@markgardner9460 No, you're thinking of Alabama the following season, when the Tide beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl to finish undefeated and win the title in both polls. In this season (1978), Bama was clobbered by USC at Birmingham. USC fans screamed that they should have won the title by this Rose Bowl win and their defeating Alabama in the regular season. But the persistent replays of Charles White's "score" that finally showed he did not score at all cost the Trojans the title.
