MAJOR Davinci Resolve 18.1 Update: MY FIRST REACTIONS

I was so happy with the new Voice Isolation option, but it all of a sudden just disappeared from the Inspector tab. Now I only have Dialogue Leveler. Do you have any ideea how I can get it back? Thanks

New subscriber, thank you. So far the performance enhancements have really made a difference, almost like my machine is twice as fast now. Would like to see video on how to bring background into fusion and does that only apply to keying or have other use cases?

For literally 24h:) on 11th November I got the update with voice isolation and I was super excited because it was amazing, and yesterday 12th November, I got another update (same name as before) and after I ran that update voice isolation was gone! And I'm not the only who had the exact same issue. Others reported this as well

Dacinci resolve is the holy grail if it comes to video editing an there are no subcription costs. Blackmagic kills adobe.

A few nice tweaks, like that they continue to improve. Sadly not very much much I'll ever use for my landscape/drone videos (others will fore sure). I don't do much complex audio editing and don't care about social media or vertical video at all. But a few small tweaks that i really like!

Your tutorials are simply invaluable. I downloaded the free version a few months ago. I was so impressed I upgraded to Studio. Last night, the 18.1 update squawked on Linux, complaining about missing packages. But there is a GUI (Synaptic Package Manager) that installed the prerequisites and then 18.1 updated just fine. Linux is my primary workstation but when I need Lightroom I dual boot into Windoze 11 where I also installed DaVinci. So how best to SHARE projects? On the occasional edit in Win11, I just export the project and import it back into Linux it. The links will break since the file system notation is different even though it's the same physical location (I have a network NAS). DaVinci has a relinking option that goes pretty fast and then everything is good. Don't know how many people use a dual boot platform. The BlackMagic cloud would have the same file name conflicts, so does anyone else have any ideas?

So, I honestly am not familiar with Linux at all so not sure how best to handle that although…I suspect there would be a way you can use the Mapped Mount feature on preferences to help tell Resolve which file path it should be looking for. It’s Chapter 4 and top of Page 89 in the new user manual. Either that or the Path Mapping feature. It works very well moving between Mac and Windows systems. Do you tend to switch regularly during a project (back and forth)? Otherwise I’d consider continuing to do what you do and simply relink the media or even send a Project Archive (maybe a more time intensive option so not the best idea).

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Went straight to p 89 on manual. I'll check that out! Super tip. As I have the USB Dongle for studio, I can put it on any PC OS I choose, therefore it's paramount to be able to share projects.

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd SOLVED: You had the right idea. Here's how I now can share projects between Linux and Windows: Each operating system has its own SSD, but both share a common hard drive for data. Go to Preferences (ctrl ,)-> System->Media Storage. Where it says "Mount" you list the path in the CURRENT operating system. For me in Win 11, it's D:\Pictures\DJI. In the "Mapped Mount", you list the path in the OTHER OS: for me in Linux Mint, it's /media/lars/data/Pictures/DJI. Now, If I export from Linux, Win11 opens it just fine and vice versa. I could have just as well used the NAS path, but the local disc is faster. Thanks again for helping solve this. Maybe others will find it useful.

Absolutely!! You must backup the project libraries before as you have to upgrade them as part of the update. If you don’t, there’s no going back.

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd That's a good question. Where I see myself using it is in situations where the sky is blown out in certain areas. This won't happen very often, so you are right, this won't be a day to day use case.

That’s an odd issue. I’d try the obvious, silly things like restarting the application and your machine. Assume you’ve done that already. If not, can you try resetting the UI from the View menu? Failing that, backup, remove Resolve and reinstall. Does that solve the issue? Bit of a pain but doesn’t take too long to try those steps.

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd hi. Thank you for your reply. From what I've gathered, this must have been a mistake. I'm not the only one having this issue. Apparently the first update came with voice isolation (which was not supposed to happen for free versions) and next day with the new update they took it out. What I hate the most I me deleting the previous archive (the one with the voice isolation update). I should have kept that but who would have thought, right? Now I'm using all kinds of data recovery software, trying to recover that previous update/archive. So far without any luck

A lot of these added features, do you require to purchase an expensive computer (mac) with the new chip to operate properly with no issues?

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been able to check that yet. I’m going to see how they perform on my laptop and I’ll report back. Of course, the faster the hardware the better but in most cases I think you’ll be okay. I did find that the dialogue leveller caused some playback issues if not rendered.

I am unable to add subtitles to the timeline on a couple of videos I edited yesterday. I can see subtitles within the video but there's no way to find, edit or add them to the timeline. I'm a newbie to Davinci - Could you shed some light? Has something changed after 18.1 to the subtitles/captions option?

I’ve certainly had a few issues with the Dialogue Leveller affecting playback when turned on and the results being a little odd without any adjustments to the settings. The Voice Isolation has generally worked very well for me. I think time to test and hopefully some early bug fixes will sort out any stability issues. Good to see these features though.

Automations are really powerful. I’m sure I’ve only ever really scratched the surface of what’s possible with it and knowing more about it having a Fairlight panel makes so much sense!! I think the new updates in 18 and 18.1 make it way more intuitive and interesting to use. You’ll love it was you actually understand what you’re trying to do! 😉

There is a problem, when I got the update, the entire DaVinci Resolve window is zoomed in to close, and I don’t know how to zoom it out. I don’t want to go into windows Settings and Zoom my entire computer out because I just want to zoom out the DaVinci Resolve application. How do you fix this?

Are you able to see the main menu bar options? Go there and look for the option to Reset UI Layout in the View menu.

From what I can make out is that there is supposed to be an option in the preferences panel to scale the UI, some people have it whilst others don't. Maybe the windows build didn't get it released this time round. Fingers crossed it comes soon.

Yes a lot of features are available for the Free version the Voice Isolation however is not as it uses the Neural Engine so you need Studio for that but if you take that feature alone it’s well worth the investment.
