BIG UPDATE! I have had a Patreon member who I will keep anonymous offer to fund our next giveaway rig! This means we will be continuing full force with the F550. This will not only be our security after almost a year and a half in survival mode, but it will also be a great opportunity to grow the KZbin channel and experiment with this new habitat construction. Then our next giveaway rig will also most likely use this construction and put us on a new level for one very lucky person! Thank you all for your comments, thoughts, and suggestions!

This is the option we are going with. I think not being under as much stress would be very valuable. Building our rig first would also allow us to experiment with our new design concept for future builds, build up the channel more and create some authority. I am also lucky to say we do have a very good funding offer for our next giveaway build!

James. 100% build your rig first. Your security is so important, especially given your past business experience with your friend. Focus on yourself, but take us along for the ride and I think you’ll be amazed by the response. I can only speak for myself but I think the majority of your followers subscribed to your channel because they felt a connection to your story, your passion, your honesty, and your journey (mentally and physically). I am excited to see future builds, but I’m mostly excited to see you build something for YOU, and see what decisions you make for YOUR rig. You deserve that. Keep doing what you’re doing with the giveaway, but also focus on YOU. Excited to see where you take us!!

Call me crazy but the quickest solution I can think of for the raised roof would be to get another box and cut the top half and just stick it right on top of your existing box pretty much extending it upwards. I know finding the same box may not be easy but you can pretty much do what you're looking for. The corners will be seamless and you can extend upper half of the box from the middle creating the cab over... Just food for thought...
@fishnfreak04
@fishnfreak04 2 ай бұрын
Or cut the middle and lengthen it and keep the old roof as the roof
@ExpeditionRanchTV
@ExpeditionRanchTV 2 ай бұрын
I think we are better off getting into our own structure for flexibility of design. The time it would take to modify the box is similar to starting from scratch with the design style mentioned. As for putting two ambo boxes together, it’s feasible but unlikely to work. It would be so difficult to find a matching box dimensionally. Each one is different. Love the idea though!

Hi James, your personal security is paramount. You’ve been really hurt by your friend’s betrayal and I feel for you so deeply. You’re a great man and I know you will succeed! I need to be totally honest here. Your business model is as you say risky but what isn’t in life? Your store will take off and so too will the rig builds. As you progress and more honest people enter your realm the future will explode with magnificent possibilities! As far as future builds are concerned you’re the heart and soul of the business and you will never let anyone down. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I sense a worry in you that you’re letting people down if you choose to do your home first. I can say with no hesitation, that it’s simply not true. You’re a man of honor and integrity and you live by that creed. I have been following your journey and I admire you to no end. If you haven’t fallen asleep reading this, I’d like to tell you a personal story. I have a godson who is your age and is very much like you. He’s intuitive, talented and as stubborn as any mule could ever be! And you know what? It makes me love him more! I’ve been with him in 10 degree nights replacing the oil pan on his 96 f250 and loving every moment! I’ve spent weekends helping him and now missing him asking me because, like you, he’s surpassed anything I could teach him. One good thing is I have life experience and what I’ve learned is - go for it! Do it and never regret what you learn. Every thing has a reason. James you have the drive and a gift that those of us who truly respect, admire and care about you will always stand by you. So to my way of thinking, build your home and let your supporters know what you need and trust in us to give back and help. And as far as the interior of the cab… ah blue is fine too!!! You make me so proud to follow along in your travels! Rog

James I'm 36 and have been through a lot myself including living on the streets in my truck. I know how important it is to have that safety net so I say build your truck first. That would give you the time you need to get others involved in the next giveaway truck and also help you take off some of the pressure knowing you have a fall back just in case. I'm pretty sure ppl will more than understand that decision plus I think you should consider actually letting ppl help design the next giveaway truck. I mean I'm a welder/fabricator and I'm no expert but I think you are doing something different and good as I know welding saved my life years ago so just continue to be you and involve ppl and I think they will surprise you.

First off, I really enjoy your channel and I look forward to seeing it grow. I would work on your F550 build. That way you have security. It's the most important thing I believe. I also think that your idea about making something from scratch could pay big dividends in the future, esp. if you can make it simple enough where it could fit on most truck platforms. I think it would be worth you figuring out how to design and built it out of aluminum, keep it simple and robust. You could sell kits or convert 3/4 ton pickups where people could buy them off you and make it their own. Could you imagine, if you had some kind of setup like this, you could very well migrate this into a nice little business if you wanted to. Well, I guess that is my $0.02. I hope I didn't ramble too much and I hope that it gives you something to think about. That is one of the best things about a community like KZbin, it's mostly like minded people. The only other thing that I can think of, is maybe take a look at the channel Truck House Life, I'm sure you already have, but maybe watching some of his content will give you some good ideas as well. Maybe it might be fun to build something like he has done? Good luck my friend!
@allenpiper1935

I like the direction with the composite. Nothing wrong with repurposing balance boxes but it's not exactly right for what you want anyway. I would definitely suggest you make a lightweight aluminum flatbed for the F550 that your composite box can mount to. It'd be more money and time upfront, but if you're thinking this will be your longterm truck then it might be nice to actually use it as a truck during builds (take the box off and use the flatbed for supplies runs and such). You might be surprised by how often you set up the box in a fixed location while you run around with the flatbed.

for future giveaways, maybe you could do one where people enter their own vehicle in the giveaway and if they win, you do a buildout on their own truck or van? that would cutdown on the cost of them a bunch without having to buy a platform to build the camper on or any maintenance to do with the drivetrain.

First , I commend your commitment to your values. Thank you for sharing your story, it shows your outlook on life and how of a real person you are. I think you should go through the 550 and get it ready for whatever the final plan is. build the 450, blue interiors are great! Stay with ZF transmissions, like you say, they last.. What about getting another of the same make of ambulance box and cutting the top half off and mounting it on the original. Than you would have an interior height that gives you alot more options. Just sayin!!

I'm a working actor in Hollywood. I will tell you, never gamble on your financial security, ever. I am living comfortably while my friends and colleagues are facing financial disaster during this volatile time in the film industry. Yesterday, Paramount Pictures TV Studios ceased business. All of its shows will either have to go to CBS or find another network. This includes all of "Star Trek" and even the "Yellowstone" franchises. People will lose their jobs. Those who maintain their savings won't suffer. My suggestion, take action to protect your financial security. Find outside investments and work part-time construction to enhance your living while you expand your enterprise.

As a data point, our van has an RTX 2000 with 550w of solar and only a 280ah battery. I've never had a problem running the AC all day. Generally when it is hot, the solar has a ton of gain. I've even left the van in 90 degrees and come back to a higher battery percentage than when I left. I would bet that a well-insulated box like yours would require a lot less power to cool than you're thinking, so long as you pick a unit that pulls a reasonable amount of amps.

If you have a MIG welder and a spool gun the horizontal welding won't be an issue, and will be relatively fast. It also doesn't need to be solid, you can stitch the skin and solid weld the supports. Only need TIG for vertical welds on aluminum. For the cabover, look into construction methods for those things and I think you will be surprised at how little there is, as for the corner details... that is a challenge. You can call ambulance repair suppliers and they can get it for you, but its probably expensive.

I seem to be going on a different route from other people, but I would say hold off on the 550 while you know you have a good roof over your head and a place to work. Keep the manual transmission as the reliability on those are much better than automatic. I loved AmbitionStrikes truck. All that being said, in the end it is your decision and whatever one you make, I’ll continue to support you!

If it was me building a personal rig, I would consider building a small tag along trailer. That would contain all the power generation components, solar panels, batteries, inverters etc. It would also be a place for you tool storage, water storage, When you would get to a campsite, all you need to do is connect a power cord from the trailer to the camper. If you plan on being able to hold 4 adults inside, you need all the room you can spare. Use your 450's ambulance body as a guide. You can quickly figure out where you can eliminate a compartment that was used for the on-board electrical and use it for something else. This is coming from someone with over 30 years in the automotive and metal fabrication industries. And an idea for an off road trailer is to search for surplus military trailers. I've been enjoying your videos and wish you the best on your endeavor.

There are a lot of people who cannot drive manuals. I have had 450s with Automatic transmission that have gone 500-800 K without problems. It’s a matter of finding a truck that hasn’t had multiple drivers. It makes a difference. Find a truck used by a self employed plumber or electrician who uses it personally. That’s what I did with my 2002. I am selling the truck now with 200K on a 7.3L and utility box. I just had front end rebuilt all new bearings and the drive shaft and center bearing redone. So the drive train is in great shape. But it’s a crew cab. Shock I want for my overland rig. I use the back seat area for extra storage and freezer. I also have a platform that can be used as an additional bed if needed.

Congrats on getting funding for your next giveaway! That is exciting to hear, and I think you will like experimenting on your own rig anyway. Especially if you do decide to go with a totally custom camper box (which would be awesome to watch btw), you can put it through a lot of real use and fine tune the design before the next build goes off to someone else. With the manual trans, I would use what you have this time, but an automatic would probably be better for future giveaways. I personally would take a manual all day every day, mostly because it makes driving more fun, but my wife would definitely disagree. Just looking purely at numbers, you will appeal to a much broader audience by going with something that is accessible to more people.

for the workspace and guest bed, have your thought about hideaway twin beds like a train cabin? Or drop down from the ceiling like cruise ships? If one is lower it could be counter space. I know structure support is an issue. just an idea. Definitely a tight space to fit all the "like to haves" in. Building Custom is always nice and you have the talent.

Here's what I think: I think you go all out and do the 550 for yourself. Build the F550 how YOU want it, and to what the girlfriend and yourself require. Film the process; the hiccups, the wins, losses, etc. This gives you time to generate a larger audience. If you generate interest in the whole "truck restoration / camper build" field, not only will you draw in a larger audience over time, but if also allows you to gain a bit more experience, and experiment with different methods / risks that you wouldn't entirely be comfortable doing on a giveaway build. Hearing you say you were unsure of the blue interior just because you weren't sure if everyone would like it, issues with the tranny, - and wanting to go over the motor completely - leads me to think you wouldn't want to try things out you weren't entirely comfortable doing on a rig going to a fan. I think if you spend the time doing your truck, you'll learn a bit more along the way, allowing you to make the next giveaway rig even better. I do think the experience gained from doing a personal truck before jumping right into another giveaway would be immensely benefical. Plus, like you said, you're not sure about the success of the giveaways. I'd much rather see you have a home, than to see a giveaway not lead to financial success. At the end of the day, that's what we all want here: We want to see cool builds, truck restorations, and to see you succeed. For summary: Do your own F550. Take some risks, experiment with things you wouldn't be comfortable doing on a rig going to a stranger. Document the process, while documenting it for your own sake, you would also grow your audience and hopefully gather more attention prior to doing the next truck. Love to hear your thoughts.

In my opinion, not commenting on the personal aspects but rather from the giveaway perspective, keeping in mind saving yourself first before others, and in a limited frame of view specifically referencing the question asked on the giveaway truck, I would prefer the zf6 than the automatic, especially having a rig that's already been ran through for reliability purposes having already gotten fucked over On a 7.3 that blew 5 minutes after buying it. In other terms, I agree with others in that you should secure your own future before risking it, seeing current events. You're a much better planner and thinker than I am, so I'm sure you'll make it through any event. Love the content, and can't wait to see more of it.

And as a side note, if the winner is someone unfortunate enough to not know how to drive a manual and experience the joy that they are, truck manuals mated to diesel v8s are some of the easiest to learn on and drive. With the limited experience I have on the zf5, it was easier to drive than the honda manuals I learned on and owned, and I anxiously await driving it again.

Build the 550. Figure out the exoskeleton and how you want to build it. This could be a test bed for future rigs you want to build. I would build out the amberlamps boxes just because you have them. Maybe design those for a weekend warrior type of vehicle instead of trying to make it a full time house on wheels. But if it was me I would move away from ambulance boxes. Especially if your trying to make vans a person could live in full time. Building your own exoskeleton box will give you much more freedom. Once you have a repeatable, cost affective, and easy to build box down then you can focus on all the other things. Also think about getting some heavy duty C channel and extending the frame...not too much maybe 2 to 3 feet. Drill some holes and use some good grade 8 hardware and bolt it to the existing frame.

I think you should stick with option 1. There are multiple things you can do along the way. Smaller giveaways, the option to save the points a person accuires and use them on give aways that intrest that individual, in clude small personal touches with merch shipments. I watched another KZbin chanel give away a piston from an engine that blew just to a rondm person. Your videos are awsome it give an inspiring overlander more information on what comes along wit these builds and things to look for when attempting something similar. Also last thing i promise i love manual transmissions and understand there usefullness but maybe consider including some with automatic transmissions. That would appeal to a larger demographic of people who don't know how to drive a manual transmission.

I understand about the whole mental capacity of everything. Do the easiest on you. What’s best for you, is the most important. The rest will fall in place in the end. At 50 I’ve been wanting to build something like this and of course life has always gotten in the way. Again, do what’s best for you. We will follow your decision regardless…

Think modular- ie you won’t need to sleep 4 while you have two workstations. Instead of all those walls on your design, think setting up work time, converting to sleep time. More room for activities!

The problem is when you’re living in something full-time and you have to set up for different activities. It just makes it more difficult. You want things to be super easy without much set up work. I think that works for a camper, but not for something designed for full-time living

Watched most of your video my opinion, build your own, keep in mind compost toxicity constantly gassing off in an enclosed area, also fire related safety. On the cheaper side (time wise) maybe look into a used cabover U-Haul body. And a trans cooler, maybe a drive shaft parking brake off. Do it in stages too cut initial time and costs solar AC later on just pre wire for it stuff like that. Good luck

Personal living security is #1 then business, I am currently building a pop top truck camper, aluminum frame with composite panels, so far its economical to build and will be a tough little overland rig truck is a 2021 Tundra, that's about as reliable as it gets.

Build the F450, keep it simple, leave the standard transmission, (it's a give away) build the ambulance box and keep the bed in the back and do things that you are familiar with based upon your current camper. Make it usable and edequate, and then naturally use that content to grow your channel. Don't over think it. Just build it. Build the F550 for yourself and your GF. You need that stability. Build it as it is going to be for your needs - if you decide in the future to give it away, well, you can still do that. Remember it's a give away, so they will accept it as you build it. As for the composite camper with exoskeleton, that sounds like a good plan, and it will allow you to configure it to your personal needs so that sounds best for your needs. Use the build content for your channel so you can grow your audience. Don't dwell too deep in the minutia of details, because for some people, they will lose interest, and you want to keep your audience interested. Subscribers equates to dollars, so just keep the key components of the build show just enough to keep your audience hungry for more, that will keep them coming back. Hope this helped a little, good luck with your projects and what you decide!

My opinion, hold on the 550, build a cost effective 450 (so using that ambulance box), maybe use it for a bit and do more content to capitalize one it, do the giveaway on the 450 and after that, build the ultimate exoskeleton 550 for yours and your girlfriends needs. That way if SHTF, you still have a built 450 as a safety line and a 550 that you could still capitalize on while building the 450 with "how to" videos on maintence on that truck. btw. I also do camper conversions but in Portugal

If you wanted more space you could always make hydraulic slide outs that just slide out a foot or two so you can have cabinets and storage that would usually take up more space

I think slide-outs for now are out of my area of expertise and available time. I also know that would affect the design of the box itself, especially for an offroad vehicle.

I build MANY things. Durable, sealable and light is SUPER difficult in a slide out. Additonally, I know ambo boxes. The advantage is Remy could safely sleep in the back while going down the road. Its why we grabbed a 2003 ambo.

I would build out the 450 ambulance, the build videos would produce KZbin videos and if things get tough you can always sell it rather than a giveaway if fast cash is needed. Also have to keep in mind if your youtube channel is your current main source of income, what is gonna grow that faster, seeing your channel statistics the build videos have the most views so continue building . You can always make a decision on the 450 as a giveaway or to sell it and make fast money later down the line when the build is complete.

Build for you first. Your security means better products for your consumers. I know how hard this may be, but if everything went bust, you need to be secure. If you do that, believe me, you will still get moving on the channel. You’ll be able to turn the corners and not have to worry about you all the time. Good luck on your decision.

I get wanting to build your own first. You want that security. That security is a little voice in the back of your head that says, what if I fail? I don't know if I can do this. What should I do? That little voice puts fear in you. I think if you really want this, you need to set fear aside and go for it and build your next giveaway. You already have a great start to it. You have your social media, you're building a go following, you have your store. Plus, you're up front with your viewers of your plan and why. Not to mention, you have a great backstory, that a lot of people can relate to. Something else to think about is sponsors. If you think about it, you already have one sponsor, the guy that's letting you live there. Maybe you could give this next giveaway a little more significance, by naming it after him in some way. Show appreciation and give credit. You might also be able to go in town and pick up a couple local sponsors from an auto parts store, hardware store or maybe a fabricating company. Maybe they would give you some discounts for some advertising. So many are wanting to live this nomad thing and a lot of them, I think, would rather have a custom refurbished one they can buy, than to build one themselves. Plus, you could build new ones at the same time, if you wanted. Besides, you're young, you can fail 2 or 3 more times and you'll still have enough time to pick yourself up and start over. It's sometimes really hard, but it's all in your determination. You have to have a conversation with your fear and doubt, tell them to FO. You might have setbacks from time to time, but who doesn't? Good luck, you got this!! P.S. I subscribed, so I can watch you grow.

okay i dont comment a lot but. You have a couple options. the f550 is a great platform with many options of boxes from flatbeds to box truck boxes. you could also use another one of the same ambulance boxes and extend the top by chopping it up. but you also have a decent outreach. im sure theres many people out there that would collaborate whether that is on the shop side or the camping side. expand your content many of us watch this for you, not just the builds. just food for thought wish the best for you on these adventures!

I suppose it would all hang on your time line because if you think the second rig would be the best business decision (and not going into debt would be good) then doing the f450 first is the way to go. You said you had around two years of living where you are so it’s weather you think you can get both of them done in that time, I’m not that knowledgeable on how long it would take. And by doing the restoration of the mechanical side of the f550 now then doing the second rig that could propel you to be able to finish the f550 and do a third rig. However its whether you think you can get to that point and how quickly? However just make sure you have a back up plan if things do start heading downhill (maybe doing both rigs in tandem) I’m not sure but I hope everything goes as smoothly as it can 👍

you can find an junk rv with an aluminum frame that may match the dimensions your going for.. typically they are oversized and designed for convent layouts. not sure which might fit your truck dims but look up something like a 2018 igo. usually the widths and heights are all very similar. not sure if this helps but an idea.

Build your home. Adding a significant other to future adventures and assuming based on the need for two work stations that she will/does have a following as well extends your platform. Obviously this extends your timeline on your current business model, but to me the thought of not having YOUR HOME secured which is also a revenue stream on your clear ability to inform and entertain would be a stressor. Think about towables/trailers maybe!? Everyone has a vehicle, do an ultra lite and a normal 5k ish pull behind. Allows you to use your amazing design and building mind from complete scratch. And James thank you for your bit on not being religious and after life, etc. living in the now is what I think matters, you have a future in living in the now, expand on that, grown in that, we will be here no matter what you decide but you need to do you and be comfortable and confident for it to be a success. Don’t forget you two (four) will have amazing success in viewership On The Road. Best wishes man, I’m hoping for whatever you deem a success, for you!

I would stick with option one for now, you need to keep your own sercurity in mind first, in case things change or something goes wrong. As for when it comes to the next build, I think sticking with the manual for now is a good idea, and maybe alternate for future builds until you have the data on wether it truly affects peoples interest. I would also say stick with the blue for now just to keep costs down. You dont want to get too in deep with the buisness loan, its always safer to be conservative when loaning.

More than likely, your 450 doesn’t have a rear main leak. They very rarely leak on the 7.3 More common is the turbo pedestal will leak oil into the valley. The oil then drips through a weep hole into the bell housing and makes it look like a rear main from underneath the truck. You’ll see for sure when you pull the transmission.

I’m a little late coming to this video with build suggestions, however a possible solution that might make for simpler construction would be to raise the whole body from the floor and add height at the bottom rather than cutting the roof and adding there. This might preserve your desired window and add the room you need under the floor for various water tanks. The simplest method to do this might be to just build a platform that fits under the chassis.

We have a gardening business in Colorado and will be looking for help next summer. We’ve got property you can live in your rig on. Takes you away from ranch briefly but may give you time to design and reflect. I’m also a psychologist and life coach if you want ideas on reconciling the emotional security side with the business side. Also, if you add a waterproof shirt/shell to your apparel I’d grab one. I am really interested in your rim/tire choice. Just a new "discovery" i am looking to source without breaking the bank. Red Barn Customs (michigan), or Staz (Wisconsin) or ANY of the other steel wheels are expensive. I singled out my dually on 19.5 steel rail wheels from a scrap yard. Problem is i cant air down 19.5s. I want 20" tires so there is less sidewall (safety in a blowout).... SO..... i just found that Weld rim makes a 20" aluminum rim for newer rail trucks. It's $500 each for the rims. They can only be mounted one way. My old steels can be flipped on my rear. The Dana 80 on your 450 and the Dana s135 in your 550 should be able to spaced out significantly with wheel spacers. The bearing should handle it. Your GVW will likely be 15.5 and 17.5k (450/550 respectively). I dont think they did a 19.5k# in the 550 until later. Yours should be 8 bolt 19.5 rims. The rig i am working thru is a 2003 Quigley E350 7.3 rolling on Excursion axles (D50 frt/D70 rear). Likely putting s135 on rear w/3:91 and Detroit (need better braking) and i have already re-sprung the rear and put cast spring SD mounts on frame.
