Water heater gas control valves and gas pilot supply lines are assembled on the water heaters during the manufacturing process. These are typically gas leak tested on the assembly line. I've seen this during many training tours I've put together at the Water Heater manufacturing plants when I train home inspectors. Plumbers installing water heaters should be checking for gas leaks after installation including the manufacturers pilot supply.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Of Water Heaters
Water heaters are a mechanical component for the plumbing system. Its purpose is to change cold potable water into hot potable water and can be done in several ways with several types of energy sources. The types of energy sources can include; electric, LP propane, fuel oil and natural gas.
The types of water heaters include instantaneous/ tank-less, home boiler systems and the most common is full-size tanks. The tanks for water heaters come in all sizes ranging from 5 gallon to 80 gallon on residential homes. The most common sizes range from 30 gallon to 75 gallon depending on the size of the home (bedroom & bathrooms).
WATER HEATER TYPES:
•Standard with tank “natural gas/LP propane” using a draft hood and metal pipe for exhaust. (Life exp.) 13+/-yrs.
•High Efficiency with tank “natural gas/LP propane” using a power vent and schedule 40 PVC pipe for exhaust. (Life exp.) 13+/-yrs.
•"Electric" with tank “electric” Has no exhaust - Clean energy (Life exp.) 15+/-yrs.
•"OIL" with tank, uses metal pipe for exhaust - Dirty soot energy (Life exp.) 10+/-yrs.
•Tank less High Efficiency “natural gas/LP propane” using Metal or schedule 40 PVC pipe for exhaust. “Electric type” has no exhaust (Average life expectancy) 18-20+/-yrs.
PARTS AND COMPONIENTS:
•Shut off valve for cold water supply
•Drain spout to drain off water from the tanks or system
•Pressure relief valve. This is designed to release hot water during an occasion of overheating of water and/or improper pressure buildup in the tank or system.
•Drop pipe installed to the pressure relief valve. This is to insure that scorching hot water that is discharged from the pressure relief valve is directed to a safe location at the floor. It prevents a scorching hazard.
•Anode rod is an internal component inside water heater TANKS - Failures can result in sulfur odor with well water use.
•Drain pan below water heaters with TANKS. This is designed to retain water from weeping, leaking tanks to prevent flood/water damages.
•Gas shut off valve To cut of gas supply on water heaters using gas or LP
•Gas control valve Located at the bottom front of the tank and is designed for pilot / temperature control. These are on water heaters using gas or LP
•Electric heat element and temperature controls Used on “ELECTRIC” water heaters only and located at the front mid sections behind a metal cover plate.
•Gas drip leg - Its purpose is to ensure keeping debris out of the tiny orifices of the gas control valve. This is a sediment trap that is installed downstream of the appliance gas shutoff valve. The sediment trap is gas pipe formed with a tee fitting having a capped nipple installed vertically in the bottom most opening of the tee for collecting debris.
Maintenance:
Water heaters with gallon tanks will accumulate sediment inside them which requires flushing and draining annually. The sediment is any solid that does not dissolve in the water. It can be iron, calcium, sand or any other grit from a well, or any other material that has entered into the municipal water mains. Many municipal water systems are not filtered, which always allows small amounts of debris to move through the pipes.
TIP: To look for sediment in your water, simply look in the toilet tank attached to the bowl that holds the water. The older the toilet the more sediment you may find.
With gas type water heaters, the sediment creates an insulation barrier between the burner flame below and the water inside the water heater tank. This makes the water heater function harder and requires more energy costing the home owner more money.
One of the largest water heater manufacturers claims that for every ½ inch of sediment in the bottom of the water heater tank may require up to 70% more fuel to heat the water.
