This is what Boat yard nightmares are made of... Fixing the Keel. www.sailingnan...
In this episode, Nandji brings on a potential worst nightmare... Sitting too long on the hard stand, the lead/steel weight of the keel has oxidised, causing rust and the fibreglass to delaminate. How far down the rabbit hole do we travel... If you are going to do a job right, you do it right the first time. After juggling any thoughts and short cuts in my mind, I do what I know should do and cut it all off (half the keel) and ay up new fibreglass. A job I do not want to repeat any time soon.

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia! Now completing our second major refit, Nandji is ready for the world when the world is ready for us!!!

In my experience fiberglass does not bond all that well to lead. Been watching you guys for a coupla years now, and am always amazed at your resiliency and courage. You are a beautiful family, and I send you much love from Canada.

It's epoxy that does the bonding, not the glass.
@CraigOverend
@CraigOverend 3 жыл бұрын
Metals oxidize pretty quickly in hot humid environments so you have to work quickly and ideally you scour/scrub the epoxy onto the surface to break through the oxidation layer for it to bond well.

G'day mate, I've glassed hundreds of boats at my shop and it's obviously not the funnest thing to do, but you'll eventually regret it, if you take short cuts mate. Good on ya for not cutting corners! Glad to see you reglassed all the delaminated areas on the keel. You must always remember, it's not just you on the boat mate, but your wife and child. If you repair the damage correctly the first time, it obviously lasts and there's nothing to worry about. You definitely made the correct decision. Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺.

I was set on selling everything buying a sailboat and traveling the world. Then I started watching all these sailing channels and all the work and wonder if I am capable of it. I’ve just never worked on a boat or engines which you better be able too.
@AustinBoil
@AustinBoil 3 жыл бұрын
Unless you are well funded enough to pay others to do the work your second thoughts are pretty much spot on. Even so, then you are held to THEIR schedule & availability. Additionally if you are in the middle of a passage with nobody around, you better have some good mechanical, engine, & electrical skills or you will be stranded, not good & maybe dangerous. There's a lot to consider and even then there are always things you never thought of that arise no matter how well prepared you think you are.

Don't let it scare you away from your dreams. I did a lot of this stuff as a kid and there are a lot of folks willing to lend a hand. Always. Diesel engines are fairly straight forward and glassing and epoxy work is too. Patience is the key. You learn by doing. Just don't take short cuts and prepare as best you can. Get out there.
