The Orion VI's that they showed on this video, had the same overheating problems which was similar to that of the WMATA and like they stated, have all been removed and replaced by New Flyer XDE40 Hybrid buses. I suspect it had to do with how the heat was being distributed within the engine compartment along with other factors based on it's overall design, being that it had the same Diesel Engine and Transmission set up as the Orion V's which had no such major issues when it came to overwhelming Engine Overheating cases.

It's a combination of two things, these Orion VIs were lemons and lack of maintenance. Ours had the Cummins CNG engines and the floors would warp easily. The Oakville one I rode on rode alright but definitely not the most sound thing. They should have ordered VIIs or Vs instead.

These 900 New Flyers Replaced In House Metro Busses, Mainly the Last of the Neoplan (6700 Series) & New Flyer Hi-Floor Busses (5000-5222 Series), Delivered in 1999-2000, & the Older Low Floor NABI Busses Delivered in 2000 (7000-7214 Series) NABI Low Floor Busses from 2001 (73,74 & 7500 Series), & Some of the Early Low Floor New Flyers (53, 54, & 55 Series, Some are still Out on the Streets Today), that were Delivered with the NABI Low Floors in 2001. 2.) The 3 Contractors Operating Metro Bus Service got a Trickle of the 40 Foot New Flyers, But No Heavy Replacement for the 66 Remaining Orion Busses Left in the Contract Fleet! Metro's South Bay Service Council, Don Szerlap who is the Vice Chair & Well as Chairman Ralph Franklin also a Inglewood City Councilman, Voiced Heavy Concern over these Aging Orions, & Pushed to Get State & Federal Grants to Replace the Aging Orion Busses, Gateway Cities Council has Stayed Silent on the Orion's, but Will be Rasing Hell & Asking Questions, Along with South Bay Service Council to Metro Director of Service Councils... These buses are known as Orion VIs (or 6). LACMTA purchased these buses back in 2001 and from what I can tell, they did not overhaul these. WMATA in D.C. used to have these buses as well (2000 Orion VIs, same engine and transmission), but were retired back in 2012 due to a series of engine fires coupled with the fact that these buses hit the magic age of 12 years old and were thus not cost effective to repair and keep running.

Because its Failure to Communicate between Metro & The 3 Contractors who Run Bus Service for Metro Regarding Major Overhauls & Rehabs on these Busses, As Well as Other Busses the Contractors Operate for Metro. Metro Owns the Busses, But the Contractors Run & Operate, & Maintain the Busses that Metro Bought for the Contractors. But there had Been Issues on what Happened if a Contract Bus Needs to be Repainted, Engine Overhaul, Heavy Collision Damage, Etc, & You Hear Very Little From Metro & the Contractor or Metro's Contract Services who Oversee the 3 Contract Service Providers. Why is that I Ask Myself? Also Suburban Chicago's Pace Bus System, Retired All of its Orion's This Year, Washington D.C. I had No Idea they had the Orion's in Their Fleet in the Past?
@orion456 жыл бұрын
Jeez. Lot's of wrong and biased facts. The Orion VI is sort of a lemon, but in all, a good bus. The retired buses are left to deteriorate. Makes sense that the windows are wrecked. Never heard of rocks? They get thrown by onlookers. The engine stopping is a lot better than the alternative, which is the bus blowing to pieces. The pressure threshold is between a certain PSi and if it goes below, BOOM. But the worst one of all? The last point, the bus shaking. ALL buses shake exactly like that. Never heard a bus that hasn't. But really, the city councillor can't do anything. It's a private company, and these buses aren't that bad. In my opinion, these buses shouldn't be retired, just rebuilt. It's a cheaper option, and buying new buses won't fix all the issues.

Beside the Orion VIs catching fire, these buses had issues with the A/C units since they frequently leaked and even the rear doors close slowly. I used to ride Metro and sometimes rode these on the 125, 128, 130, and 205 routes. Now I ride on Long Beach Transit more often, in which they use a New Flyer, Gillig, and BYD bus fleet. Even though their oldest buses are from 2002 (2200-series D40LF), they are maintained very well

@SoCalTransitFan2 жыл бұрын
The thing that concerns me the most is that out of all the routes that the OBI Orion VI operates, it only has problems on the 130 past Artesia TC, 205 in the Harbor City area, and 232 all down the line. Yet it almost never happens on the 125 or 625 (which was later deemed useless because of the LAX shuttles that were already servicing the area and the Green Line station). Why was that the case, I have no idea. I've seen and have rode these buses when I was a kid, and while yes, I thought they were cool, I look back and see how terrible they handle. And the issue is Metro seen no problem with it until AFTER they purchased an entire set of New Flyer XN40s. Call it a hunch, but I think the only reason why they never removed those buses from regular service was because they had no other buses owned by MV to replace the buses run on those routes. Regardless, those buses could have been set aside and probably turned into CNG or electric buses. Instead, Metro decided to scrap them. Oh well, another bus just came and went I guess.

Back in 1997-1999 MTA in NYC had Orion Vi’s but they were tooking out of Service due to door issues and fallen pieces
@zhx23656 жыл бұрын
I think I might know the reason. It's due to poor maintenance. If the bus driver don't take care of the buses, especially those that are CNG powered, they can blow up in their faces or sound weird when in service. -This is coming from somebody that's from NYC.
@andrewwalker99605 жыл бұрын
nyc_isaiah2 I don’t know about NYC MTA’s operators, but out here in SoCal, we are definitely not mechanics. In other words, poor maintenance is absolutely not the operators’ fault. In fact, based on the number of older-model New Flyers and NABIs I see LA Metro use, I’d say their maintenance is pretty damn good.

The problem is, LAC MTA can't buy the best busses on the market. They are told which busses to buy. And that's the problem. When MTA mechanics were inspecting busses in the factory, before accepting them, over 1/2 of the busses were not ready for service. That's why they put private companies in charge of inspection, and after that 100% of the busses were "ready" for service.

Let me put this in a way that you can understand: if it were not for the diesel buses, you would not have the electric buses. And if you're talking about the XE60 operating the Metro Orange Line, 1: that's a completely different jurisdiction and a completely different division, and 2: No buses in the San Fernando Valley besides the 233 and 734 (now referred to as 761) even operated articulated buses, much less any bus in the valley even using diesel. And if you say Santa Clarita Transit or Antelope Valley Transportation Authority, I'm going to have to stop you right there because those are completely different transit agencies using completely different buses from a completely different manufacturer. Bottom line is: don't talk bad about diesel buses just because you see one diesel bus with majority of the facts that they left out.
