The floating yellow object the boat crew is handling is an oil boom, which will be used to collect any oil or diesel fuel that makes it to the river. Being lighter than water, fuel and oil is collected via vacuum and absorbent rags by haz mat crews. Great job on the photos and reporting, Landon!

Why did they rip put the ATCS on this line ? There used to be over the air ATCS in Topton and Emmaus and the west and east end of the yard behind Bethlehem Steel and through Easton into NJ. They had the data on channel 5, the BCPs were on 936.9375 MHz and all the signals and switches and track block indicators were on MCPs on 897.9375 MHz. If they had these on the air and the locomotives equipped with the ATCS PTC it would show the red signals and stop the locomotives before they reach them. We absolutely need that safeguard against human error.

ATCS just deals with controlling switches and signals. It's not part of PTC. At least the old version of it. If you are no longer getting data, more than likely it's been converted over to the new 220Mhz ITCM that is piggybacked on PTC. If they removed CTC from the line (hence no ATCS) it should still have PTC.

I was at home when this happened I had a stationary scanner for the railroad radio frequency and EMS and I was up around 6 or so and had it on and I remember hearing the crew calling to dispatch to inform what has happened and I quickly had my portable scanner and listen to EMS to respond

At the rate they're going, NS will be filing for chapter 13 protection from costs incurred from derailments, paying for clean ups, insurance claims, environmental damage, etc. I know derailments are going to happen, it's the laws of physics. But it's like a weekly occurrence with NS .. and I'm not talking just a couple cars on the ground, they're major derailments. Thankfully no one was seriously injured. I hope to see some coverage of the clean up. Thanks for sharing this, Landon.

The Lehigh Line in Middlesex County was dead today. 2 CSX trains in 7 hours. No NS at all. Sunday mornings are usually super busy

Ladies and gentlemen. Our fugitive's been on the run for 90 minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground - barring injury, is approximately 4 miles an hour, giving us a radius of 6 miles. I want a hard-target search of any residence, gas-station, farmhouse, hen house, dog house and outhouse in that area. Check points go up at 15 miles.

Norfolk Southern is not a good corporate neighbor. They had a small derailment in the evening along the canal where I live dumping coal in the canal and tried to get the cars back on the track before anyone found out about it.

The tankers have no leaks and the plastic pellets that leaked are also no hazardous. A “small” amount of diesel fuel however was spilled into the river and I suspect some lawsuits and a bankruptcy coming.

I thought the new mandatory PTC was supposed to stop this type of accident. If it did not work the industry wasted money for all that system cost. This is a main line that handles hazaderous cargo so it should have been working.

They were running at restricted speed.PTC prevents us from running a stop signal, it wont prevent us from hitting another train. And yes it was a total waste of money.

This is what happens when they have all the tracks tore up and they can't run trains around the affected area you know if they still have the tracks on the other side of the river take a detour everybody across the tracks and then across the bridge but no they tear all the tracks out because they don't want to maintain them most likely to open no train traffic going through Allentown for about 3 days

well first to every railfan the Federal railroad administration put out a bulletin to erery railroad about PTC issues and corrective actions to take until the software maker can fix some issues with ptc most likely ptc was the working at time of this derailment or ptc was cut out by the first train to derail.

Just another stupid derailment. Nothing new. The maintenance of the rolling stock and the tracks will ensure that we will see many more. So I just wonder why in Europe this is quite rare.

How many derailments are there during one year in the US? How many per 1000 miles of train traffic? It looks like a surpricingly high number. Rails bent like worms.... Lots of force there. Okey. Sweden hade a derailment on the northern iron ore line in december 2023, damaging 10 miles of tracks. Freezing temperatures, -40 Celsius, delayed the repair to 65 days. Running trains for a week, they derailed again, not far away..... Before that they have been running trains for years without mishaps.
