You can do the same thing with the piece that came with the box. Ive just drilled and tapped the one after removing it.

it would be better in my opinion to have a mount that comes in 2 pieces that together wrap snugly around the aluminum bar and screws together so nothing need to be removed from the packout and fiddled with in the first place.
@packibletool
@packibletool 6 ай бұрын
We have actually thought about this! I've gone as far as prototyping and designing one even. However, there is a trade off in doing so, and that is you add infinite more complexity and cost to making such a mount like you speak of. And I am not convinced that most folks would rather pay significantly more for the mounts, simply to avoid the small handfull of times they will detach the rails. Ideally once you get this setup, you would not be doing this every single day... Right? Hopefully you see where I am coming from.
@louisperich6678

@@packibletool i would pay more. I have packouts with bent rails I can’t manage to remove. Folks with the drawer units often struggle getting the top tab loose. you can start with the extrusion design you have, drill and tap as you do now, slice it in half vertically, to create a front and back and there you have it. Or else extend the front-to-back hole dimension by the width of the kerf to keep the two haves flush when you screw the hardware down. I don’t think you need a new design or to abandon an extrusion.
@packibletool
@packibletool 6 ай бұрын
@@louisperich6678 I wish it were that simple. Splitting that extrusion in half at scale in a production environment would be a task all by itself. There is absolutely no easy way to do it. And then there is the challenge of how to join the two halves back together. You would have to get some very very small screws to join them... The walls are only 3/16 thick. Which means you would need to get a screw like 1/16 in diameter. Drilling and tapping holes that small at scale is an absolute nightmare. Not to mention you'd need quite a few of them to make it even remotely as strong as it is as a solid piece. This would be something where one would need to start from scratch and design with that function in mind to make it practical to manufacture and make. You'd need a two part design, which means two new extrusion die sets, new fixturing and tooling, and twice as many parts and components to manage internally. Every extrusion shape is 1,000lb minimum order, which means stocking and tying up twice as much money in inventory. It's twice the number of fixtures and loads into the cnc. Twice the handling, washing, packaging, etc... We're talking $10k or more and months of time to get it off the ground... Which is why I think that trade off of removing the rails is a small price to pay for something thats cheap and robust and only needs to be done theoretically a couple times for the life of the box. That is sort of the point of this product as well. To make the rails as easy to remove as one can. Which is easier to do than redesigning mounts that go on without taking the rails off.. I'm not saying we won't ever do it. Just that when given the choice between solving a problem in not sure really exists, simply to make the product better. (Hardly anyone ever has complained about removing the rails to install). And choosing to make new innovative items where there are large issues with zero solution, i'm choosing to focus our attention there as it's a better business decision. It's tough. I like to make the absolute best product one possibly can. And I agree with you, if it did what you're asking, it would take our RAM mounts to that level. But often the trade off seems to be that the thing that makes sense in business terms is the design that's 80% of what you want it to be, and is profitable to produce and sell vs. the things that's 100% of what you want and costs a fortune nobody will buy it.

@@louisperich6678 Also, fun fact! When we originally designed this 3 years ago, it was a two part design, and we make it a single part design for all the reasons i described below. I had a very innovative idea on how to go about doing a two part design more economically 4-6 months ago. Flushed it all out and it still didn't make sense to invest the money and effort there at the time, even though it was super dope what we came up with. Unfortunately while I wish I could design and make without limitations, making a living and staying in business dictate what is and is not good. And usually what is good for one is the opposite for the other. I wish it were not so but... Alas! I like to eat and not live on the street lol

Like others I found the removal method Packible shows in his other video just would not work, don't know how he makes it look easy. What I discovered after thinking on it a bit, is that it works approaching it from above, hard to describe but here goes. Narrow flat blade screwdriver, insert in hole from above at an angle just below the red nub, pry back gently far enough for nub to clear, pull rail out, you are using the nub as a fulcrum. The screwdriver blade acts a guide for the nub to clear the black top. I also found helpful with the pulling part by using another screwdriver at bottom, slip in along side the cap far enough to catch the end cap, pry to use as a lever to get the rail moving. Afterwards I trimmed the nub down, drilled it and used an M6 cap screw, which essentially replaces the nub, similar to the caps you can buy from Packable. The head perfectly recesses into the hole in the black top.

I had already chewed up the corner pretty good, but I found using a slightly bigger screw driver and driving up underneath the lip makes it easier to apply your suggestion it worked. I tore enough up that I bought the kit with new pieces and will install them when they arrive. I don't think the OEM plastic tabs will support much weight once the posts have been released and reinstalled. Your idea is better than the video. You should do your own video. Also, if you measure 2 3/4" down the rail from the lip of the red material to the top of the mounting bracket, and then tweak it with the level after you get the Joey Jr. mounted, the handle will be flush with the top of the 3 drawer box. There is too much clearance between the brack and the side of the box, so when the accessory is hung on the Joey Jr, the lock does not catch under the red lip. Not a very well thought out design.

@@jmullis7377 True! But milwaukee does not sell accessories so I don't know if they care. I also believe if they ever do they will use some sort of device that is like the plastic clamps on the ends of bar bells for weightlifting. That wraps around and then clamps. So rails do not have to be removed at all.

I believe they are there to help prevent damage on corners if they were to be dropped. Also there for places to strap down, handle the boxes, etc... And of course mount accessories. Although I don't know if this was Milwaukee's vision from the onset or not.

@@jmullis7377 honestly idk if that was ever there intended purpose. As far as i know what accessories does milwaukee themself make that goes to those rails? And if they do now i really dont think there were any b4. I think they jus did it as like a roll cage for dropping it and to grab the box by. I think us ppl are the ones that were jus like hey can mount all kinds of stuff to these rails
