Decathlon Forclaz QuickHiker Fresh & Black, Waterproof Backpacking Tent, 2 Person
Agenda Free Link : www.decathlon.com/products/ba...
Price : $150
Weight : 7lbs 7oz / 3.4kg
Fresh and Black :
Fresh & Black patented exterior fabric: 99% darkness even in broad daylight. Talking about this feature for a moment, it took me a while to figure out what this tent is called that as it isn’t clearly stated on the web site. There is one quick mention of it and that’s it. Decathlon may want to explain this a bit more since it is in the name of the product.
Main fabric
100% 75D Polyester cationic
Pole
100% Aluminum
Carry bag
100% Polyester cationic
7001 aluminum poles; Ø 8.5 mm.
Tent pegs/stakes: Length 6.7"; Anodized 7075 aluminum
Sizes :
Pack Size : 15.7" * 7.5" * 6.7"
Tent Measurements : (measure to confirm)
Total height of the tent: 46.1". Dimensions of the bedroom: length 82.7" * width 47.2" * height 42.5"
.....
3 Available Setups :
This tent offers 3 available setups with the primary being a fly first design. Meaning the body and the fly are connected so when you pitch the tent, the fly is on top and it protects the body from the elements. You can set this u[p in the rain.
Complete tent : Complete protection from weather and bugs
Flysheet only : shelter mode; protection from weather and rain but not bugs
Body Only : Dry climates - Bug protection only.
....
Weather Proofing :
This is an area that most tent manufacturers don’t discuss but Decathlon does.
Waterproofing
This tent has been tested in the laboratory (tent mounted under 200 liters/sqm/hour for 4 hours, the equivalent of a tropical rain storm), as well as in field test missions.
Wind-resistance :
Wind tunnel tested on a rotating platform where they can expose each side of the tent to the wind. To test its wind-resistance, the tent must be properly pitched, taut but not stretched, with all the guy ropes in position around the tent. It should remain habitable at wind speeds of 45 mph, measured near ground level.

For that I'd rather use the "2 seconds easy fresh and black" from the same company. it is 1.3 kg heavier (but who cares on a festival), costs less and opens like an umbrella in literally 2 seconds.

The heat blocking aspect is its unique selling point and for summer festivals, makes it worth owning despite every other issue. Although to be fair, I own the first gen pop-up.

I have a similar tent from Decathlon and it has the same problem with the poles. It's 10 years old now and still going strong [bike camping], but man oh man.....the force required to fit those poles in makes me feel that, they or the tent, can snap at any point. After all these years the tent is still waterproof and the zips work great.

I have a Helsport tent (a noweigan manifacturer) who also have this non-adjustable pole cups on their Superlight series, at least the one I have. It require some strenght, but the tent in the video seemed to need quite a bit more of raw power to get the pole in. I can understand why an ultralight tent might do this, it's a (very small) weight saving, my 4-person tent is about 2 lbs lighter than the tent in the video. I have a very hard time to understand it on this tent though, half an ounce extra doesn't matter for the customers willing to buy it, but the problems of setting it up definetily will! 🤔

The "fresh and black" types are advertised in Germany for keeping cool even if the sun hits it directly. A friend of mine got one and i have to say that it's really keeping it cool even in bright sun in comparrison to my normal tent. So "fresh" stands for cool temperture wise as the company tells the german customers.

@@SandraOrtmann1976 The Decathlon website I log onto in Ireland states in a few places that the tent is designed to "have darkness for sleeping", "fresh and black fabric to sleep well", on another line on the same page it says, "FRESH & BLACK patented exterior fabric: 99% darkness even in broad daylight". Thats 3 places on the one page that I could see having a quick look. I have NO personal links to Decathlon btw. They may well need to update their US website, in fact their websites in general are not great but their stuff is usually.

Fresh and black tents are specifically designed for camping out in the sun. The reflective coating keeps out the heat and the black coating prevents you from being woken up at 5 am. They are pretty much the opposite of an 4 seasons tent and the idea works pretty well for what it's designed for.

The fabric is not just good for camping in the hot, but also for keeping the heat *in* when it's cold. I've had a few other tents in the past and the F&B tent is noticeably warmer when it's a cold and clear night, because the tent radiates less heat.

Dearest Luke. .Firstly- Thank you for all your brilliant and engaging work. I have been following you for two years and your content is always spot on. I am familiar with this tent and can confirm that its mainly aimed at car/motorcycle/festival campers. NOT HIKERS..... The reason its so heavy is due to the extra coatings applied to the fly , and the venting features. I suspect the punctures in the fly are actually small gaps in the coating , letting the powerful sunlight penetrate the fly material. The reason that the poles are so difficult to seat is due to the stiffness / inflexibility of the fly (again due to all the coatings). Decathlon sell another version of this tent called QUICKHIKER 2. it has a polyester fly and an inner without blackout or ground vents. That tent is about 2.8kg and retails cheaper than your review model here in the UK. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND that you look at that version as I suspect you might be impressed. I have used at least 14 tents for long distance bike touring ,and frustratingly always found shortcomings in expensive & Cheap designs. Four of the 14 were re buys of the basic QUICKHIKER 2 which in my opinion cannot be beaten on price and functionality. So there you have it Luke. Perhaps the cheaper simpler version of this design is the superior option ? Greetings and blessings from four seasons in a day Scotland. Paul T

Those are not actually holes in the fly it's just where the aluminium coating hasn't covered completely, external fly material won't actually be holed, the other reason they call it fresh is that the reflect coating keeps the Internal temp lower in direct sun, their tents are always waterproof but heavy I've been running their new 2seconds F&B tent on my bike works great super easy setup and take down, Decathlon have a pretty good rep here in Europe.

@TheOutdoorGearReview About the lightspots on the flysheet. In 2 seconds pop-up tent Decathlon's written this: Dear Customers and Users, You will be pleased with your Fresh&Black tent owing to the freshness and darkness it provides. You may have noticed small holes on the tent canvas. This is not a product fault. Simply, a waterproof white seam line, used to assemble the panels of the lined canvas of your tent. To guarantee tent waterproofing, this seam line is covered with a watertight, heat-bonded and translucent strip which allows the light to pass through the small holes of the seam. The Black component which provides darkness is not completely uniform, so some tiny spots of light can be seen. This does not affect the waterproofing nor the overall tent obscurity (confirmed with laboratory tests). Jean-Baptiste Bonnafous, Product Manager Ι don't know if this letter applies to all the fresh and black tents but i feel the need to inform you. Great Job, Love your your work.

I've had that tent for a few years, I agree, it's not a 2 man hiking tent, but solo in the summer when there is only a couple of dark hours it works well. I can see it aimed more at motorcyclists camping in the south of France. My poles are also extremely tight, but I can assemble it, for that reason I couldn't lend it to my G/F, and would be careful who I recommended it to. I've had it in wind, enough to blow away every family tent around me, and it barely moved, I could see the 'wings' fluttering maybe an inch?. I was tempted to trim a bit off the poles to make it go up easier but decided against it as it pitches drum tight and I'd not like to lose that. Being that dark inside you always need a torch handy even in the day as you just lose stuff in the dark. I've not noticed any pin pricks in mine, and it's not leaked, maybe the blackout material makes them show up?

The problem with tents that have long pole sleeves is if they're not pulled through fully and bent to the final configuration, they tend to be tight. I have a Columbia tent that has the same problem, and stretching the tent and making sure it is tight helps (rather than trying to stretch the pole and the corner).

Great introduction to this tent, Luke. Not only is it heavy (for hiking/bacpacking) but it is also bulky. You would need a large capacity backpack and I would certainly not strap it onto the outside of a pack. Those holes are a concern. Like you I've set up tents hundreds of times and never struggled with any of them including large Coleman 4 to 6 person tents. I'd love to hear Decathlon's response.

The Fresh part of the tag refers to the fact that the inside remains cool thanks to the sun reflecting coating (contrary to standard tents that can be like a greenhouse) 120cm in width is pretty standard for a 2 person tent, isn't it? You should return it to Decathlon for an exchange because the tag isn't supposed to be upside down (plus all the small holes)

I’ve got the green 2 person version of this tent & not had any issues. Admittedly only used when car camping as not light & while have to slightly pull to get the pole to fit in, in never worried too much or taken too much effort. I can easily put it up alone in less than 5 minutes & I’m a 5ft 6 woman with not much strength. As for space it’s not great however I’m on the curvier side and slept in it with a man who was 6ft 2 with our bags in the porches and we didn’t feel particularly squished but admittedly it’s much nicer when I’ve been in it alone. As for waterproofness the one I have I can confirm is definitely waterproof & can withstand reasonable winds. In the UK last July we had some pretty strong winds and I went down the coast. ‘He’ worried re the wind but the tent was perfectly fine no issues. Also as for rain in the Lake District it dealt with a night of heavy rain and also a couple of extreme heavy rain up in Scotland. I was as dry as a bone inside. I’ve since got more lightweight tents I plan to test out when UK lockdown allows, but for the money I paid for mine which I think was about £80 which isn’t bad going for the UK, & what it is I really don’t think it’s a bad product at all. Does the job. Well the green version anyway which is essentially the same, but without the blackout bit.

Pop-up shelters also frequently tend to be sewn too tight. As a sewer, it is simply is a matter of not allowing enough fabric for seam allowances. Poles can also be cut too long as well. As for the holes in the new, unused fly, it simply means someone walked or kneeled on it with either rough concrete or gravel underneah.

I have this tent for a couple of years now. The setup is not great, but you have to make sure the pole is pushed all the way back. It's really easy to miss that, as the material at the end can kind of fold, which could make you think you've hit the end - you often haven't. I use it for car camping in summer. I love it for ventilation and "fresh&black". It allows me to wake up 2-3 hours after my friends, who have to get up just because of heat. This makes it a great tent for festivals, which usually run up to 1-3am, and restart around noon. Being able to sleep up to 9-10am, is everything in that case. Holds up really well, it got through multiple summer storms without any problems. The biggest con: it's heavy, and requires a ground sheet on top of that.

You must do something wrong. My Quick Hiker 3 is super easy to set up. Both my wife and 12 year old son have set up the tent alone without any problems. I have another Dechatlon tent and you must be sure to get the pole in all the way without getting stuck otherwise you get the issue you described. The Fresh and Black concept is great if you camp in a place without shade or in summer nights in here in Sweden then the sun never really goes down. The downside is that it too dark inside without som sort of lamp and the tent is heavier than a normal tent. Not the best tent out there but worth the price and it’s really blocks the sun in the summer.

Hi, i use the 3 person version of this tent the last 3 weeks on my 8.000 km motorbike trip to the Nordkapp (most north by bike achivable point in continentel europe, above arctic circle). In the beginning I had the same issue with the poles when setting up,the tent. BUT…then I take a look at the end of the pole shoes and see, that the end of the poles are not in the endposition as they should be. I f you have an eye on it, the need of strengh to set up the tent reduces much. The holes in the outer rain sheet have no effect on the rain improvement. I had very strong rain and wind on this trip an never had a wet inside. I hope that you can understand my not so good english and I could help you to set up the tent more easier.

I have the green/yellow quick hiker 2. That one also has the stretching problem when fixing the poles in the clamps, but i dont mind it, as i am the only one using it. The setup process is indeed kind of a chore... About the holes in the fly, i noticed that too in mine, but there is no trace of any leak so far in about four years of occasional use. The tent was subjected to some high altitude strong winds and some heavy rain sessions aswell. On the weight side, it's weighty, but lighter than the one in the video, at about 2.8 kg. All in all, i think it is a decent tent for the price i paid for it, but i would think twice about this "improved" fresh and black version at it's 3.1 kg. Cheers and i'm looking curiously for your results with the rain test !

Yeah I'm guessing you'd want the much lighter quick hiker ultralight 2 that's also alot easier to set-up.

There's no need to do that as the tent stretches that tiny amount after being used for a couple of wet nights and the setup is effortless afterwards.

..I have the "2 second FRESH+BLACK 3 person tent" for some time already. Those holes are just holes in the shading, bacause of the folding of the tent, they have no impact on the tent function (but I have to say its quite discomforting). The "FRESH" part refers to ventilation and to the heat reflective material on the outside (and in my case to the insulated inside tent)... ..and man, it WORKS. 5C difference to other tents no problem in summer, even more. And the way the light hits you when you open the tent in the morning... ..you have to get used to that (second morning, you will be opening it slowly)... ..generaly, decathlon tents are heavier, but you can rely on them (not just my opinion, speaking from experience of people I know ). The naming is a bit strange though...

I live in Europe and a lot of people use Decathlon products because they are affordable and have a lot of stores countrywide. I have a lot of products from them too, but never had good experience with their tents. Actually I had to throw them away after a short time of use.

Not the quickhiker, but I did see the "fresh & black" style of tent on festivals in Germany in 2019 :o) The users were quit happy with the "dark & cool" aspect ... CU ALL

Consider a Hilleberg 2-Person tent. It will have all the features & likely outlast you. Cry once, cause it's initially expensive. Buy Once, cause it comes with a lifetime warranty for the initial purchaser. Hilleberg tents make no excuses, they are shelters you can count on during harsh weather & are easy to set up.

@@azclaimjumper I've been using the basic non blackout version of this Quechua tent for 5 years now in wet and windy Scotland and have had no issues with it. As much as Hillebergs are incredible quality, they are also incredibly, ridiculously, eyewateringly, nonsensically expensive.

Thanks for the review, sadly I watched it too late. I bought the MH100 Fresh&Black at 50€ and I found those same holes, which is way I'm taking it back to Decathlon. Here's my view on the Fresh&Black: PROS - allegedly keeps some heat out - dark interior lets you sleep outside of dark hours CONS - fabric is heavier compared to the regular version (2.4 kg vs 3.0 kg for the MH100) - more expansive compared to the regular version (27.99€ vs 49.99€) - you won't be able to look through your gear without a light at all times - feels a bit claustrophobic (might be just me) Overall I much rather have a regular fabric. If the tent is under direct sun it gets hot regardless and I don't wanna be sleeping when the sun is out anyway.

If your tent is damaged, you can always return it and replace. Decathlon has a 2 year warranty and they are extremely easy-going in terms of replacements and refunds.

As for the holes in the fly... I have Coleman tents with this blackout feature and was shocked when I discovered those holes in them as well. Yet.. don't judge to quickly. In both of my tents, those "stars on the night sky" aren't in fact a holes in the fly sheet, just 'chippings' in the blackout layer. After closer look from the outside on the fly sheet at those spots, there were no holes at all. So in case of this tent, I wouldn't be so judging about the quality check during production or the quality of fly sheet while using. For 99% I'm sure it's only the chipped layer on the inside and the fly is OK. Yet those layer issues also shouldn't be appearing, but let's blame the production technology.

1. The poles should snap in the the loops easy. I have had similar tent before and it took some learning curve to find a good way how to put them in easily. In most angles they seemed just way too hard to put in. 2. In Slovak Decathlon web page they say the Black & Fresh tech guarantees 17°C lower inner temperature compared to outside which sounds like a nonsense or bad translation. 3. I also had a trouble finding weight on the website. It wasnt in tech specs but in "features".

We have one of their 2 second tents that we got just for fun as a second/emergency tent. It is all tensioned. So to figure out what to 'release' to set it up AND how to get it back to fit in the bag is nightmarish. Weight, and ease of use, do not seem to be a consideration.

"Fresh & Black" basically just means the mylar reflective coating on the inside of the rain fly. It's on quite a few of Decathlon's tents, and it's used as both a blackout fabric as well as a thermal insulation. It's not that different from the blackout coating in the ICS or Eureka TCOP.

We bought a 3 man F&B Forclaz tent last year. It's a monster; almost 4 kg that my partner promised he'll carry. It's a true pain to raise, but I'll gladly do that for a cool dark space to be. Getting a migraine while out in nature when it's hot and the sun shines all night is a nightmare and this is the only tent on the european market I found that could save me. If it starts leaking I would just buy a DCF tarp to drape over it. That being said I would gladly pay 3000€ for a 1.5 kg tent that did the same for me...

I'm a bit confused if there are different models in the US and Europe. I own this tent for some years. I use it only during deep winter at a motorcycle ralley, where tents get abused a lot, and won't last long. So the price really does matter. It can hold a lot of snow. But I never had it in really windy conditions. Only heavy rain or snow. Condensation is a bit of a problem. I don't find it too hard to set up. Sure a bit harder, than my tent I use primarily but I think it's ok. And I am pretty sure not to be much stronger than Luke (I don't train a lot). My tent is 100% waterproof. I don't really care about the weight as I use it on a motorcycle. But my other tent has 4 pounds, so there is a difference for sure. And I think it is too short.I'm 6ft1 and it's "OK" but in really cold conditions, with a thick sleeping bag and isolation mat, I often hit the tent with my feet or my head. But all in all I like it. I woudn't use everytime. It's "OK"

Looks like a tent for teenagers going to a festival. They want the silver outside to keep the heat from the sun out and want to sleep well into the day, because it got late with a lot of booze. So that’s why it’s black inside. The brand is not suitable for serious backpacking.

the fresh and black is a propriatary tech by quechua which prevents you from sweating inside the tent even in hot conditions thus the name fresh and the tent is completly black which allows you to sleep even during the day, i have a quechua mountain hicker 100 F&B and to my experiance its weak in keeping the tent warm during the winter so i would actually recommend the normal one, but in the summer you cant get a better tent than the fresh and black.
