Catch a rising STAR. In the heart of Glendale's vibrant nights, A voice like a beacon, pure and bright, Angelina Jordan takes the stage, With soulful tunes from a bygone age. She weaves a spell with melody, A blend of old and new symphony, The Alex Theatre's walls will hold, A story through her songs, told bold. Her voice, a vessel of emotion deep, Stirs the heart, makes the stoic weep, Each note, a brushstroke on a canvas vast, Painting memories that forever last. For one night in September's embrace, The songstress in the spotlight's grace, Will gift an experience so rare, A musical journey beyond compare. So mark the date, let nothing bar, For Angelina's voice will carry far, In Glendale's Alex, under the starry sheen, A night with the songstress, a dream serene.

There is so much great music around these days and so accessible thanks to the likes of KZbin. Why would anyone want to stick to just one genre or artist? Then we would not have discovered all these artists we now love. AJ is fantastic but so is Lucy T, Aurora, Diana Ankudinova, Daniella Tuleshover, etc.

This on the rooftop is getting close to the heavens and is heavenly. It is simple and beautiful. The sunlight coming on an angle, the guitar accompaniment, her smiles, her hand gestures for emphasis, the subtle melancholy about leaving, her vocal range from high to low… I think this is perfection. From major to minor….that last sustained Goodbye is gorgeous.

Fans of clean singers just can't understand why Angelina doesn't choose to sing cleanly for every song. Angelina fans, can't understand why fans of clean singers, don't appreciate the wide variety of vocal choices Angelina makes, to tell the story of the song as she feels it should be sung. Comes down to personal preference. Before clicking on a Lucy Thomas performance, I can already hear her beautiful voice singing the song and she delivers. When I click on a new Angelina performance, I have no idea what it will sound like, but know it will be awesome.

I'm one of those guilty of not being able to listen to Lucy Thomas, Aurora or other such artists because I'm too invested in Angelina. But what I would never do is go on to one of their videos and slag them off in the way Aron mentions here. That is just bad manners.

There was a voice/music teacher reactor once that liked her voice but was very critical of her slurring words, dropping consonants and not pronouncing every word precisely. I guess he wanted it more like Broadway style singing. But there have been many other voice teacher/vocal coach reactors, some with jazz backgrounds that praise her style. One said that you don’t need to sing everything precisely. It’s more the sound that you want to present that’s right for the song, not necessarily the clean, precise pronunciation of every word. Billie Holiday was Angelina’s biggest early influence and I don’t think she was known for clean singing. What about the classic song Louie Louie. Can anybody understand what the guy is singing, except the chorus? Probably not, but who cares.

It makes your reactions unique and enjoyable! As for this song from her, it's musical heaven! Just the purity of her tone, as well as her changes in tone, breathyness, clarity, etc., and the soft vibrato, all keep it so interesting, pleasing, and a joy to listen to!!! I follow Angelina since a few years now and I have seen most of her videos: this, to me, is one of her finest. But what a musical journey she has made so far: very impressive for an 18 years old. I agree fully with your comments about Lucy Thomas: she is awesome as well, I follow her the same way I follow Angelina and yes, I am not sticking on just one genre. I love diversity. So I will mention another name as well: 16 years old Emma Kok from the Netherlands. Just take a look and maybe you like her genre as well. Due to her fragile health condition, Emma does not have as many music video's as Angelina and Lucy have, but what she has is.... Well, take a look I would suggest. Here you have it: 3 young singers, 3 different genres and all 3 very determined to make it work.

There may not be a lot of variation in the melody, but the cadence makes it not an easy song. Angelina nails the emotion, the sentiment. Definitely listen to that mash-up of Ella and Angelina singing this. There is no one like Ella, but the fact that we are doing some type of comparison between the greatest female jazz singer in history with a ten year old is astonishing. Angelina more than holds her own. As for Lucy Thomas, the songs I’ve heard are truly beautiful. Her voice is pristine. Angelina, from early childhood, can give us pristine, but she can also give us rasp, attitude, jazz, blues, texture, melancholy, and sass. I have only good things to say about Lucy, but I don’t think we’re going to hear her do Bad Valentine, It’s a Man’s World, Diamond, etc.

I feel a special bond with her and her family that sets them all apart from everyone else. But of course unlike some of their fans I would never go dis other singers performances.

So delighted you didn't skip this one! Too many overlook it. Probably her puriest, most pristine pre-teen performance. Nowhere has she shown resistance to mentioning God. Her pronunciation may be effected by the slight British accent of her pre-school teachers. Note: this was the family's most extended trip to the US. One assumes it involved meetings with labels, planning for visas, schools, housing and more related to the permanent relocation.

One of my favourite performances by Angelina. So pure and deceptively simple. Time stops to listen. I'm not sure about "gods/goods", though. the Norwegian for "good" is spelled "god" but pronounced nearer to "good", and I think this is a mispronunciation. There are a few other delightful mispronunciations elsewhere in her songs (but very few!).

It's hard to pick a favorite Angelina performance, but this one is near the top for me. It's some combination of: her voice, the beautiful sentiment of the lyrics, her body language/smiles, the simple arrangement with the guitar, and the setting outside with her being sunlit from the side. Just close to perfection for me. There's a brilliant mashup - audio only - of Angelina and Ella doing this song, by angel Phillip Ashley at pa1189j, who I believe has a background in audio engineering at the BBC. You owe it to yourself to listen! Here's Ella at the peak of her powers, in a remastered studio recording, side-by-side with 10 year old Angelina live outside - with young Angelina singing at, I think, a similar level of skill and emotion as one of the greatest voices of jazz ever. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5DYhIKXbNqAbs0si=KpqQE28VO1XZ4_Kd

I like to watch "Wings Of Pegasus," which uses an application to determine if something has been pitch-corrected. He has done a Lucy song, and it was pitch-corrected. I have asked him to do an Angelina one when she was at home singing but he has not done that yet. He says that almost all record companies use pitch correction automatically. I am a big fan at 10 as well, this is one of my favorites.
@TroyArchAngel
@TroyArchAngel 7 күн бұрын
You don't necessarily have to use an application sometimes. Lucy's songs are possibly all heavy pitch corrected and I can hear it easily. Obviously for proof he does that. Then you hear this and you can hear the real voice of a human with warmth coming out..... It's just there and part of why Angelina makes listeners emotional because it's the true human voice with imperfections. No human voice can hit perfect pitch throughout a whole song, especially those long sustained notes and stay on pitch the whole way through. When I attempt to listen to Lucy I prepare myself for artificial vocals that and manipulated to be perfect notes. To me it destroys the fact of being an artist with integrity.

Aron, I would so like to go to some of these pre and post concert angel get togethers but we are flying to LA just prior to the concert and our flight back to Texas leaves at midnight on the 20th so it will be tight. We have things at home thar require our being back as soon as possible. I hope there will be something right after the concert that I can go to. There are just so many angels that I would like to meet in person, and you are one at the top of the list along with Steve and Chris and James. My cousin and I will be awake around 24 hours by the time we get back. I am 65, and she is 75, so it's going to really be hard on us, but to see Angelina in person, I am willing to do quite a lot. If there are still open seats available close to the 20th I hope Republic encourages their employees and others associated with them to go so that Angelina doesn't look out and see empty seats. IMO, Republic has not been promoting her as much as they should. Steve and I had a short online conversation about this, and many angels don't understand this either.

We have to wake up the morning of the 20th and take an Uber to the DFW airport then fly to LAX then Uber to the Alex then Uber back to LAX after the concert then Uber back home from DFW. I thought of just driving to DFW in my car and leaving it at the airport the driving it home when we got home but I think we will be so tired that it might not be safe for me to drive by the time we get back home to Texas. I would stay overnight in LA but we have animals that need to be cared for and this is already a long time to be away from home. I just hope we can get away from LAX quickly and get to the theater before the concert starts. I haven't been to LA since I was stationed in southern California in the late 70's when I was in the Air Force. The traffic was horrible even then. @A-Aron: Angelina may be pronouncing "gods" as "goods" in the same way she pronounces "no" in this song. I'm not a speaker of Norwegian, but if you listen to some of her other lyrics -- "cotton," for example in Summertime (NGT final), you can hear the "o" altered slightly in nearly the same way. IMHO, it makes her deliveries all the more charming and always amazing.

The talk about Lucy is interesting as I found her before I found Angelina (I was looking at versions of Hallelujah and Lucy's is great) and followed her closely for a while but my interest could not be sustained. I think someone else mentioned that Angelina's variation in vocal choices is so exciting (and I agree), I remain riveted after more than a year and hundreds of performances. I can still step outside the bubble but generally I am not impressed by what else is out there. I have watched snippets of all the "great" young singers and am turned off for many reasons. There is a reason many of us gave up listening to modern music and Angelina is the one that has bought us back. I can thank Angelina because she renewed my interest and I have found a number of startling vocalists like Vanessa Amorosi and Kasey Chambers who I would never have heard without Angelina.

I enjoyed your comment about Lucy. I totally agree about her voice being so clear, precise, and exact. She's amazing. But, I've seen many comments on many reactor channels where the person commenting remarks about not liking vibrato, fry, etc. and that's why they don't like AJ. I'm sure those folks would love Lucy, and rightly so. Lucy is very impressive and occasionally I will listen to one of her performances. I listen to several Angelina performances each day. There are a few that I listen to often but not daily (e.g.: Morissette Amon, Lara Fabian, Elvis, Roy Orbison, etc.). I love it when the singer can evoke emotions other than admiration for their technical skills.

What's amazing is that Angelina knew that she couldn't radically approach this Ella Fitzgerald classic, which was sublime, so what does she do? She reveal's her genius by staying 'spot on' with Ella but simply slows it down a bit while tweaking the bridge section in her personal delivery style. To me, I find she brings more emotion to the song than Ella did.

The biggest difference between Jordan and Lucy is that Jordan has never used pitch correction in any of her recordings and Lucy has (Wings of Pegasus), for years. Lucy has a pretty voice, but if you didn’t know that it was she who was singing, you really wouldn’t be able to recognize her voice, whereas with Jordan, her voice is instantly recognizable no matter what genre of music she’s singing. Her mashup with Ella in this song is really quite remarkable!

Her low volume vibrato is just astounding. You can especially hear her Mastery and control over it in a lot of her Tik Tok videos like Love is a Game or Only Love Can Hurt Like This, where she's wearing the orange hoodie. There are a lot of them.

As Andy says, never know what Angelina will do with her interpretation, from one song to the next it is usually different. Lucy, for example, has a wonderful voice no doubt...just not in the same class IMHO. Sorry, but It is what it is. No disrespect to Lucy or many many other "singers". There are literally thousands of "wonderful singers", very very few master vocalists.

A-ARON hope you read: Hey mister. Your journey thus far has been great and your special guests hard-core Angels for sure. I reacted to your first listen to Unchained in Portsmouth . I am the voice in the video that hollers ,BEAUTIFUL, at the end when applause finally dies down" Anyways keep it up. I am so excited for you to see her live . I was hoping to see her again but will have to wait. As my name implies I am involved in music as a passion and lifestyle choice so I do appreciate a musician ear analysis as I myself applied many years ago. Angelina is truly a Unicorn among the Zebras among the horses. There are many things that Angelina can that others can not but is it is a big world and yes there are other Unicorns with their own set of gifts that are there to experience and enjoy. You enjoy your Concert and I will be watching for your Analysis but more to see you enjoy the voice in the Raw on full display with full control doing things that most other vocalists can not or at least struggle with. It is that depth, tone, range and absolute ownership of that vocal instrument she was gifted with and yes it was a gift or anomaly a deviation from the norm. She was fortunate that it was recognized young because make no mistake Angelina has worked hard all her life. Her mother told how hard it was raising a child as an adult. Angelina's mother is pretty special along with the rest of the Crew on board the SS Barefoot Princess that for the last ten years dedicated themselves to sharing and caring for this young lady through her prodigious years and now as a freshi young adult. Cheers. Bluesfingers1 ("The Music of Everything ")

Hi, A A Ron, I seen where Angelina was asked about her knowing five different languages. She said English was the hardest language for her to learn out of all of them. She knows Japanese very good she said because there's one word for each thing. In English one word could be spelled different but mean the same or vise versa . She did a song in Japan and sang it in Japanese in honor of the lady that wrote the song and died shortly after. Its called "Like a river flow" Age 10, Grandma Merry recorded it on her phone so its a little shaky. They asked the Japanese audience how Angelina's Japanese was ,They all said Perfect Japanese Very good . Her grandpa was Japanese, They don't let just anybody come there and sing that song cuz that lady that died that wrote it was their Whitney Houston of Japan, They have museums all over Japan to honor her .They Love Angelina too.

You do no favors trying to promote your favorite performer by talking trash about another. I love hundreds of singers both male and female. Sometimes it’s all about an arrangement of a certain song, or the key it’s done in or the beat etc. back before the computer took over music we had real performers. Sinatra, Mathis, Como, T Jones, A Williams. They were all fantastic and each had many songs that they owned! I think today’s singers are handicapped by AI. The audience is so used to every note being “perfect” that when a real singer covers a song it sounds strange to them. Angelina has a jazz background which shows in her phrasing, timing and enunciation. She is not from the Hood, the South, Broadway or deep in the hart of Texas. Angelina is unique in today’s market.

On the net there is a fan mashup of Ella and Angelina swapping verses of this song. It is a very interesting video. In fact, call me crazy, but it sounds to me like some of the pronunciations that Angelina chooses were very similar to the ones Ella picked. Finally, fan is short for fanatic, and in an OCD world there will be overreactors, we just pray that they don't go coocoo for coa coa puffs.

The problem with that particular Lucy fan is that he always says something negative about Angelina. If he doesn't like Angelina then he shouldn't listen to Angelina reactions. But he always does. Its fine to like an artist over another but its not fine to be negative against another.

I thought it is worth mentioning that the word critique doesn’t just mean negative things. It is the full examination of things, both good and bad. You aren’t the only reactor that uses the term incorrectly, just thought I would point that out. By the way, I enjoy your reactions to AJ’s music very much. @@A-AronReacts "Critique"", it means a careful judgment in which you give your opinion about the good and bad parts of something. Many people think to critique something means to just mention the bad parts. Some reactors say that they don't have anything to critique about Angelina when reacting to one of her videos or songs. When critiquing, the good things should be mentioned along with any negative comments. Please don't think I am being critical of your reactions, I love them, I just wanted to clarify the meaning of the term.

Major to Minor? Or more like a minor doing major things ;-) This video is so old already, I can't believe I can no longer speak of her as the child prodigy in the present tense. She was a child prodigy in the truest sense of the word. Now I wonder how her past will affect her future music.

Using Google translate the word God translated in Norwegian would be Gud and it's pronunciation would sound like "good" to the English, so that makes "God's above me" becomes "Guds above me" when Angelina sings it and it's meaning is the same. Try it yourself in Google Translate.using Norwegian "Guds" to English and you will see it becomes "God's".

The emotion Angelina imparts into her songs allows room for enunciation that makes some wonder about her singing… but, in many of her great performances she’s just a kid, singing in a non native language, and I come to realize many of the best singers don’t end words with some consonants so the verses have a better flow. Thanks for pointing out how her native pronunciation Gud translates to God in English. For those that want perfect English, go get your grammar teacher to sing for you. Meanwhile, thanks AAron for the thought and jazz expertise you give in your reactions. No matter what you have to say, it’s clear it comes with the highest respect for Angelina’s talent. You are one reactor who points out the amazing work this young kid put into honing her talent unlike so many reactors who just state, “She’s a prodigy.” Yes, “Gud” gave her amazing potential, but she’s been working at developing it since she held that microphone in her crib and was covering an Adel or Whitney song while singing along with her mom and grandmother. What a life we’ve been privileged to watch!

To me, this "mashup" of Ella's recording and Angelina's rendition (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5DYhIKXbNqAbs0si=8jGoP6weIpk01Epg) show the origins of Angelina's "Ella vibrato".

"God" in Norwegian is "Gud", pronounced like "good" in English. I think she just slipped into her native tongue there, maybe even intentionally.

I think the "gods" / "goods" thing is just a matter of the words being so similar in both Norwegian and English (especially the singular forms). The Norwegian word for "god" is "gud" - sort of rhyming with "lewd" (or how "güd" would be pronounced in German) - and their word for "good" is "god" - apparently with the vowel sound sort of midway between "goad" and "goof". So, I think she was actually still singing the word "gods" but with a vowel sound closer to the Norwegian pronunciation of "gud". (Note, BTW, that "guds" would not be the plural form of the word, which would be "guden". The word "guds" would mean "god's", the possessive form. AFAIK.) It's all very confusing, and I can imagine it's easy to mix them up if you're not being very careful.

The range required for this song is large. AJ maneuvers the scale beautifully. But I don't think your notion about substituting "goods" for "gods" to take religion out of the lyrics is correct -- at least not as you describe it. AJ has performed many religious songs -- including one of my very favorites (and the very favorite of many fans), "You Say," here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGesdoV5rtWjfJI, at 15. If anything, AJ is not willing to sing about "gods" plural because she believes in just one. Either that, or (perhaps more likely) she just mispronounces the word in a live performance at 10.

For what it’s worth, I’m not convinced that Angelina consciously changes “Gods” to “goods.” To me, it’s more likely she simply still has a bit of a Norwegian accent. I say this because “God” is “Gud“ in Norwegian, and pronounced much like “good” is pronounced in English.

I love AJ's rendition, and don't miss an opportunity to hear it, but here are several reasons why I think she simply mispronounced "gods." First of all, Angelina believes in God, and has sung religious carols and spirituals, so there would be no incentive to drop a religious reference from the song as A-Aron suggests. Secondly, "God" is "Gud" in Norwegian and sounds a lot like English "good." Thirdly, the plural "the gods above us" is a metaphorical reference like "the fates" in monotheistic English-speaking cultures, which may have been confusing to a non-native speaker. Finally, the Ella Fitzgerald version of the lyrics did not capitalize "gods," so Angelina may have missed it being the plural of God and actually took it for "goods."
