Major Vehicle Accident with Entrapment and Rescue! (Jaws of Life used)

A major vehicle accident in the intersection of Otis and Mission Street results in the entrapment of a patient.
Fire Trucks, Engines, and Police responded Code 3 to the scene. Crews worked to extricate the patient, closing half of the street. When the accident was initially dispatched, no ambulances were available to respond.

Nice to protect the patient privacy even when you're not required to. For those unaware, you're allowed to film a patient until the gurney is placed in the Ambulance. Public view is public and there's no trespassing the eyes and no expectation of privacy in public.

My department considers it bad luck to call the equipment "Jaws of Life" we just go by the standard names spreaders, cutter's and rams. It's not the jaws of life when it's a recovery.

If this is as serious as it looks would helimed not be dispatched, having an extra two critical care paramedics or a critical care paramedic and a trauma doctor would surely help them with pre hospital care and onward transport to a major trauma centre

This does not exist in most parts of the US as it does in Europe. Air ambulance service is typically requested by arriving ground assets, and, while aircrew paramedics and nurses do often have an expanded scope of practice over ground providers, their main resources is rapid transport.

@@mackflickerson6722 while in England it's not unusual to dispatch helimed based on the initial call for help because it sounds like a trauma doctor might be needed or there is limited or no road access, much of the current thinking has been driven by the UK casualty evacuation experience in Afghanistan where instead of using our equivalent of Blackhawks and paramedics we used a chinook with medics a trauma doctors and brought the emergency room to the casualties

Police in this situation serve an important role of scene control and reports/investigations. When the fire department and medics get on scene they have command and police are there to supplement them and are there in case law enforcement is needed. Both sides of public safety need to be there to work together

As a former Firefighter, I can explain why the Fire Dept is almost always called for vehicle accidents. They are called to provide fire protection for the EMS People as well as the patients, in case a fire should develop with the possibilities of fuel leaks, and sparks that could occur during extrication procedures. The Extrication Equipment is usually carried either on a Heavy Rescue Truck, Engine, or Ladder Truck, and this equipment would not be there to use if the Fire Dept was not called to assist. Heavy Rescue Trucks are almost always part of the Fire Dept, not EMS.
