I think if there were 20 legions again each with 200,000 astartes and then only used space marines for the role they do best, shock troops. Then the numbers might make a bit more sense. Have marines attack and not protect, use shock assault tactics and not attrition or siege. Then give them pre-horus heresy numbers and it might start to actually work out

Its mental, I read Krieg recently, and whilst it isn't a bad book, the numbers make no sense. It talks about 2-3000 guardsmen laying siege to a hive city infested with orks. Current modern estimates are that to take a large village/small town, even if lightly defended would take 1000 soldiers due to how complex an environment it. Hive cities are meant to be colossal, spanning many miles both up and long. every time I read a number of guardsmen I added 2 0's to the end for my own headcannon lol.

I didnt mind numbers in 40k until I realized the current population on earth is 7 billion, suddenly guardsman regiments, space marine legions during the horus heresy and specially space marine chapters looked stupidly small, like how are 1000 space marines supposed to deal with a planet full of orks, or necrons or whatever?

@@PoorManatee6197 Surgical strikes on strategically critical targets to disrupt the enemy followed up with a prolonged purging period? 1000 space marines has millions supporting it. They also typically reinforce millions of deployed guardsmen. Likely doing strategic first strike to disorganize enemies or defeat their leadership. Not too big of a stretch to throw them at millions × chapter's 1k.

@Majorkill, I used similar numbers to yours to calculate that the Traitor Legions at the Siege of Terra outnumbered the defenders by only 1.5 to 1 not including daemons. The prevailing wisdom among at least armchair generals is that in modern Earth warfare you need a 3 to 1 advantage in numbers to reliably overcome a fortified position. It's no wonder they failed to crack the Palace.

The perfect clone of Fulgrim is proof the traitor Primarchs can't come back, unfortunately. Primarchs aren't just flesh and bones, their souls are unique powerhouses and carried the virtues of each Son: Vulkan's invincibility as an eternal, Horus's inhuman charisma and strenght, Corax's invisibility, and so on. The reason why Fabius Bile managed to create Fulgrim's perfect clone is because he used his Primarch soul, floating in the warp after his ascension into Daemon Prince. The corruption entirely stripped them of their immortal souls, replaced with pure warp energy, they aren't coming back.

The number crunching is suuuper questionable and not even slightly reflected by any of the lore and yet I'm here for it 😂 Edit 1: ~12T Guardsman is several orders of magnitude more than they actually have available. The Macharian crusade, noted to be the largest Imperial military effort ever undertaken since the Great Crusade (until Indomitus) had 1Bn and was a huge portion of the Imperium's overall military power. It would be a footnote if that were 1/12,000th of the imperium's might. Also, the Indomitus crusade fleets had ~20 capital ships each and there were ten of them. How many guardsmen do you think they put on each ship??? Especially seeing as they pulled back literally every bit of military force still available to the imperium, even withdrawing them from active engagements. Edit 2: As far as ship numbers, there are a few thousand sectors in the imperium. Being generous, we can use Battlefleet Cadia as an example, which had 24 capital ships, and say there are ~50,000 warships. That would still seem disingenuous though, given that the Indomitus Crusade totaled a little bit more than a thousand ships and again, was scraping the bottom of the Imperium's Barrel.

On the topic of military forces, the world of Geratomro (see the novel Shadowsword), a rebellious industrial world that had some 300 million citizens couldn’t raise an additional regiment of 50,000 on short notice without compromising the world’s security/output (or being destroyed for failing to meet their next obligation a few years down the line). They did, however, have a pretty well equipped militia force (complete with tanks, air defenses, and a core of pretty good soldiers).

SOB numbers are also skewed by their detachments and active to "reserve" ratios. For instance a convent attached to a shrine or cathedral could be 50/50 SOB guard detachment and non militant Sororitas, while a order militant convent will be closer to 95/5 active/non-militant. Additionally, every Imperial Cult shrine worth destroying willl have a minimum SOB squad guarding it at a minimum. A while back I started trying to calculate SOB numbers starting with shrine guard detachments. I hit 150 million and gave up.

The thing with guardsmen varies from world to world. Gaunt’s ghost were literally ex criminals, actual criminals, former PDF troopers, and even hunters, in Catachan Devils novel, thr main protagonist was an administratum clerk that got only 4 months of Training before going to his first combat action, same was in novel 15 hours that started the meme that guardsmen only last 15 hours on battlefield, not to mention Necromunda uses literal gangsters feom Spider clan who they give guns to keep order in lower levels and send them to Space. Dont get me wrong there are many highly trained elite guardmen regiment. But saying that all guardsmen are the best of the best is a little bit of a streach. And that’s not even mentioning penal legions.
@mcarrowtime7095

Did Guilliman not say a one point after he return that Space Marines might be a little to low like around 1000 giv or take in each Chapter. And that he wanted to make them a little bigger...? Or are just much bigger and dont tell anybody about it...
@RoulicisThe
@RoulicisThe 2 жыл бұрын
You forgot two "little" details about space marine chapters : 1- The number of Astartes in the chapter DOESN'T include the numbers part of "Scout" units, which act as light Infantry, Infiltrators and reserves for the main combat companies. Simply put : Astartes chapters are organised in 10 companies of 100 Space marines each, but don't have a limit on the number of scout companies they can form up. Hence why chapters like "Black Templars" have more than ten times the number of regular Space Marine chapters : they have 10 companies, as standard oblige, but they have dozens of Scout companies as well which bolster their numbers quite significantly. 2- Each Space marine chapter is accompanied by "Squire legions" : humans that passed the qualification tests to become space marine candidates but couldn't undergo the transformation, for one reason or another. These humans are trained by the Astartes themselves and act as squires, assistant and auxiliaries in battle. So each astarte's chapter possess it's own personnal army of elite soldiers who handle logistics, paperwork and support them in campaign. So the imperial forces related to Astartes chapters are even larger than what you estimated

Game Workshop and Star Wars both seem to lowball the military forces involved in these battles.

Imperial navy: 25,000 imperial 1 star destroyers, 1.5-40 million smaller warships(based off sector groups), 50+dreadnoughts(around 26 of which are executer classes), a sovereign class(continent/small moon busting laser), two eclipses(continent/small moon), over 263,000(Specter of the past) other star destroyers/similar sized ships, sun crusher(star buster, that tanked a death stat laser), 2 death stars, an extra death star prototype with a functional laser, 2 death star sized habitation spheres, a galaxy gun(snipe planets and ships from across the galaxy), metal crystal phase shifters(bypass shields to weaken hull integrity), the tarken,(planet buster), the conqueror(continent/small moon cracking super laser) and dozens of world devastators(can rip apart planets with tractor beam projectors, while tanking shots from capital ships. Can collect materials to upgrade/grow, and even create new world devastators). There was a plan to include super class star destroyers(8km) in many of the empires sectors. That is potentially 100s. There was also the assertor class(15km), bellator(7km), and mandator III(12km). Imperial army: 10s of trillions(Rebellion era campaign guide) Stormtrooper corps: 100s of millions-billions CompForce: 100s of billions(2nd edition sourcebook) Tanks/repulsorcraft: 2-9 Trillion Walkers: 10s of millions Territory: over a million, and a half full member worlds(rebellion era campaign guide,and 2nd edition source book) , and 5-70+ million colonies(Essential atlas), vessels, and protectorates. Han solo stated to Luke they would have to search six million inhabited systems, and an old republic comic stated the holonet connected six million worlds. Weapon damage: Turbolasers dish out megatons of superheated plasma, while laser cannons in the kilotons. The attack of the clones cross section states 200 gigatons a shot, and 6 megatons a shot but we treat it as an outlier. Contrary to popular belief star wars shields do protect against projectiles/high velocity attacks. A super star destroyer's shields have tanked rebel cruisers jumping out of hyperspeed, and multi megaton hits from asteroids in an asteroid field. Deflector shields can produce ray shields(Physical/High velocity projectile weapons), and particle shields(energy based weapons). Both the 2nd edition sourcebook, and cross section tell us star destroyers are capable of turning the upper crust of planets into slag which we can believe. Carnor jax states an imperial star destroyer can make stone run like water, and turn sand into glass. Going by the bombardment of caamas, it takes several star destroyers to reduce a planet's surface twice the size of earth to molten slag in under twenty four hours. The E-11 is the equivalent of a 14.5mm round with enough heat to punch through a lightly armored or unarmored opponent, and in a new hope it vaporizes steel bars. The DLT-19 was capable of taking down lightly armored vehicles. The T-21 light repeating blaster fires the plasma bolt equivalent of a 22.5-30mm bullet from a guass rifle. Mercenaries using light blaster cannons shot through 4 inches of plasteel. T-21

Armed forces: 12,000,000 Overall Personnel: 100s of millions to a few billion(EGTW states 3.5% of the empire's military) Tanks/repulsor craft/walkers: 176,470+ Weapon damage: Turbolasers dish out megatons of energy, while laser cannons in the kilotons. I read Krieg recently, its not a bad book but the numbers are soo off-putting. Modern estimates are that to take even a moderately defended city it would take several thousand men, and if its fortified upwards of 10,000. They sent 2-3000 Guardsmen to retake a hive infested with Orks. A hive defended by walls and weapon emplacements. In ww1 the British took 60,000 casualties in the first day to try and take a town! I just pretended the numbers were in the millions range.

As far as the issue with how rare space marines and custodes are relative to guardsmen, the interesting thing is that the Tau don't have that issue. They have a few trillion fire warriors at most, and about 1-10% of those wear battlesuits, which are stronger than space marines. Imagine every single space marine legion engaging in one apocalyptic battle and still getting wiped by a hundred billion crisis suits! Things get weird when GW sometimes gets the numbers right, sometimes doesn't and never talks about the discrepancy.

On the Guard, there is also the fact that a lot of the gaurd regiments used Cadian tech because cadia could pump out trillions of helmets a day, and any planet that bought from them would also get Cadian Mercs and Commisars from their own commisariat colleges to train them. so quite a bit of gaurd regminets in the galaxy are also just Cadians from another planet. Most of the big name units do this. Kriegs rifles and artilery are sold all over the galaxy, as well as their other equipment. Pretty much any unit that gets its own codex mention sells equipment to other worlds simply because they are known galaxy wide and as such have a realtionship similar to america with out servant's, i mean valued allies. There is also a regiment that only wears leather jackets and switchblades
