Yeah it reminds me of captain Daur from the gaunts ghosts. He found the love of his life and married her. But in the next book he has to helplessly listen as she is killed behind a wall. Another thing that made it worse was he never found her body so he has a nagging voice in the back of his mind saying maybe she is still alive, just hidden behind a wall. He knows he’s tricking himself but can’t stop. Daur and his wife deserved better

Bit of a minor sad moment, but this one scene in A Thousand Sons always gets me. Phosis T’kar is fighting his way through space wolves and sisters of silence until he finally comes face to face with Constantine Valdor. Valdor calls him a monster, and at first T’kar is insulted and wants to tell Valdor that he is the monster for destroying Prospero. But then he sees his reflection in Valdors armor to see he has mutated because of the Thousands Sons gene flaw which they tried to keep a secret for so long. T’kar doesn’t event bother blocking Valdor’s attack as he respond “I know.”

Honestly, the moment that got me was in the book Titanicus. A woman is conscripted into the PDF but her husband is a dock worker and doesn't get conscripted. At the start of the book they say goodbye to each other and the woman goes on this huge misadventure and ends up being instrumental in the loyalist victory. But, back home, her husband gets in a bar fight because some guy dissed the PDF and, by proxy, his wife. He kills the guy, and effectively gets away with it. But he's so paranoid that when an arbetes officer makes casual conversation with him, he runs away and is shot in the street. The woman comes home to an empty residence and a notice of execution for her husband.

The saddest moment for me honestly was the death of Argel Tal. Kharn not only lost his best friend and brother, he lost his anchor in the world, the one thing keeping his rage in check. Without his best friend he just descended into unbridled rage. Again somehow GW made a story about a 7ft tall inhuman berserker and his 7ft tall demon possessed best friend into a heart wrenching bromance.

All other guards cheered but Andre knew to keep firing. I think the book said "He knew the marine is dying for them" as orks just aren't easy thing to melee with. Honestly I shed a tear for Polux and Dantioch. They hated each other's legion but got so close to each other to call the other brother. It was so strong that Dantioch would rather give up the Pharos device secrets than watch Polux suffer. In the end, he was cradled by Polux and told he had nothing more to ashamed of. It was so sad, I won't give too much here and I urge everyone to read it.

Magnus never did anything wrong according to the law before the edict of Nicaea. Both the Emperor and Malcador knew that Magnus used Chaos sorcery and made deals with daemons to heal the Thousand Sons. Yet they allowed him and let him continue because it worked, it gave them time. They cannot have an entire legion fall before their planned crisis, and in such a crucial time of the webway project. They even praised Magnus for his use of sorcery and all of his arcane accomplishments, like making his own webway tunnels that span across the galaxy and the warp. This praise gave Magnus vindication, that he was right, that the Emperor acknowledged his works as right! The Emperor is the law, and being recognized and praised by the law gave him vindication. It is only right to break the order to save the spearhead of the human army. Would you follow an order to "stay put" if your brother who also happens to lead the entire human armada would die? Would you have at least tried to save him as his death would destabilize the recently conquered worlds and engulf the galaxy in chaos? Magnus was morally right in breaking the Edict to try and save Horus. He was wrong in the eyes of the law because he defied it. The Emperor was wrong not to inform Magnus of the webway project even when Magnus had already built a webway of his own. They were doing the same thing, had built a similar webway, yet he never told him of it, and so it was his fault.

He had a chance to peacefully return like he wanted, he had chances to prevent fighting outright, or to even inform his legion. Magnus wasn't wrong, but he made the wrong choice at the last moment.

The Emperor deemed the Thousand Sons lost, unredeemable, and must be killed. If he chooses to have them killed, Magnus would be given a new legion. There was no home to return to in any outcome, the Thousand Sons had always been fated by the Emperor to die, just like the Thunder Warriors. No matter the outcome, even if he came back to Terra safely without the razing of Prospero, the Emperor had marked his sons for death. It is ironic that for a so-called Emperor who sought to defy fate, that spouts "Fate is not set", had already deemed the Thousand Sons unredeemable, irrecoverable, that their fate had been set to die from the beginning.

He could have put his own sons in the webway that was separate from the emperor's project. also yes the emperor was a bad dad and with our current knowledge of the setting, his decisions were flawed.

40k books are so good for these moments, especially Dan Abnett. In the Titanicus novel part of the plot is about woman drafted into the PDF. Her unit is on a training exercise when the invasion begins and they are thrown into a Titan battle where they mostly all die to Dark Mechanicus Skitarii but manage to do a bunch of heroic shit including save a Princeps from a fallen loyalist titan. Finally she manages to make it back to her apartment in the hive city only to find out her partner got drunk in a bar, started a fight with an Imperial Guardsman who made fun of the PDF and got shot running from the Arbites. After all the epic battles and heroic shit that goes on in the book having it somewhat end on that gut wrenchingly tragic note always stuck with me, The Emperor Protects.

Yeah, that... stung. Especially as someone who adores Thunder Warriors and has painted up three-ish squads of them (total of thirty models, not sure what their squad size would be). Even after the shit they were put through, they were loyal to humanity. Maybe not the Emperor, maybe not the Imperium, but they still fought when Terra was threatened, and they died fighting.

One of the most emotional moments for me was in the Vervunhive Book from the Gaunts Ghosts series. They find a scrap company and have to face off against some tanks. One asks how they managed to take out these tanks without heavy weapons and the commander of the scrap company answers that one of them takes as many granades as he/she can carry and runs up to the tank. The guardsman asks how many tanks they destroyed that way. 23. And then how many they've lost. 23. So much dedication and determination there. Encapsulates what a guardsman goes through.

Dang, no mention of Karl Thonius’ death in the Ravenor series, though tbf that wasn’t too much a tearjerker for me, just a tragedy. Saddest moment I’ve seen thus far was, ironically, in a Ciaphas Caine book. One of the Caine’s commissar cadets gets brainwashed by a psyker into fighting against the imperium, but the control gets temporarily broken when he gets close to Jürgen. He realizes what he’s done and tries to fight off the corruption but knows he’ll ultimately lose, so he puts his laspistol to his chin and pulls the trigger. This was one of the few times Caine shows genuine emotions for someone else. Not too long ago he’d given the kid his own commisarial sash to make him a full commissar, he saw this kid as himself as a young man, for him to suffer such a fate is saddening, and it was clear it was enough to cut Caine to the core.

I think out of all of these, Andre hits the hardest. While tragedy amongst demigods (astartes) is mega sad, the heartbreak of a regular human hits closer to home. Yeah, they only live for a few hours at best, but they should be allowed at least one moment of happiness before reuniting with the Emperor.

Corielle Zeth was so badass through that whole book! She was stoic as hell the entire time her entire planet was falling apart. She was brilliant too and I think you're right about her being forced into blowing magma city really setting back the imperium. Just her mind alone being willing to be innovative and inventive rather than stagnant being gone was a killer. I loved how she basically was hiding a good portion of a city worth of tech She had made that would likely be tech heresy. She practically was single handedly advancing the imperium in secret. I loved that character and that book towards her end and the way she handles her business makes her as mentally and emotionally tough as an astartes in my book. That lady was just stoic as hell

I am legitimately dreading Sanguinius' death. I know it's coming, and probably soon. I know it's going to hurt. A lot. Especially as a Blood Angel player. And I'm not sure if it's because I'm afraid they won't do it justice, or because the looming specter of death has hung over one of my favorite characters in the entire setting from the moment the Horus Heresy series started.

I've been waiting so long that now that it's here I'm scared to death he's going to die again, the story won't be good enough, or like sanguinius for you, the entire time I've been a 40k fan, he's been asleep. Thank God for the horus heresy and him being awake there. Sanguinius is probably my favorite primarch tho, maybe even more than the lion and frankly I'm right there with you. I decided to reread the entire heresy in order again about a year ago and I'm on master of mankind right now. It's like reliving the dread of knowing the coolest primarch by quite a lot is going to die. And worse than that, he knows it and he tells you how it'll happen. So you spent like 60 books just dreading it. He's just so likable! They literally made him replacement emperor for a while because he's just so wonderful that it made sense. The story of Gav and Bob is by far the greatest tearjerker for me. Such a simple ogrin with nothing but love for the emperor has to endure the greatest of sacrifices. No matter the blow he kept his faith in the emperor and his love for Bob.

I reckon the "Look da, I became an Angel!" scene was a bigger tearjerker then Dante screaming about wanting to die whilst being resurrected by Sanguineous literally one minute before, because even after 1,500 years of endless war, Dante is still Little Lous who wants to make his birth Father proud.

I think the two that got me and took me by surprise were when Yesugei sacrificed himself and then the reactions of Arvida, Ilya, and the Khan was devastating. Also when Ilya tells the Khan how proud she is of them before they ride out for the Lions Gate Spaceport. I was actually listening to that book at work, was walking to our break room, and had to veer off to gather myself after the later.

For me the saddest moment was in The Path of Heaven when Yesugei, a White Scar's psyker, sacrificed himself to grant Khan's fleet a passage to escape to Terra. Being the last person to have known the Khan since his time on Chogoris, his final telepathic message to the Khan and his reaction to it was devastating.

To me the saddest moment in 40k is the bromance between Barabas Dantioch and Alexus Pollock. A bond of brotherly love and trust forged between two Astartes of the most unlikely legions to match (Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists) which ends in the noble but still sad sacrifice of Dantioch.

The fact two of these stories come from ADB's Night Lords trilogy speaks volumes about just how good it is. It's old as fuck now but I can not stress enough that it is the best 40k series of novels ever written. A really sad/sombre moment in the trilogy for me was when Variel basically explains to Talos that his body was rejecting his gene seed and that in fact his death was a necessary part of the warbands future.

Something that really got to me was when Dante was basically dying at the end of Devestation of Baal. His vision of his human father and him saying "Da, they made me an angel" fucking tear gassed me. Sure, what exactly did he do wrong. Everything he has done was permitted by the Emperor. Even when the entire legion has daemons as tutelaries/familiars, the Emperor never told them to stop nor eradicate them when they were in his presence. His dark sorcery was permitted by BOTH MALCADOR and EMPEROR. They knew he used Chaos Sorcery and made deals to save his legion. Yet they allowed it because it worked and bought them time. They cannot have an entire legion fall before their planned civil war, and especially in such a crucial period of webway construction, and so they allowed and secretly permitted his Chaos Sorcery and Daemonic dealings. Guess what? It backfired. The Emperor and Malcador were at fault for this. If they had stopped Magnus during the early periods of the Crusade, and after he cured his sons, Magnus wouldn't have felt "vindicated" in his usage of chaos and the approval/praise he receives from the Emperor makes things WORSE. ****From the Last Son of Prospero >‘But Magnus fell,’ Hassan said. >‘He dared too much. How would people work, travel, transport goods, without their webway tunnels which allows them to move near instantaneously across their galactic domains and even the warp. Everything will literally collapse if they stop using sorcery. Buildings will not make or maintain themselves. Those flying pyramids would fall. The magical bending of the laws of reality will collapse. ___ "They still went against the orders of Nicaea" Oh please, Magnus was hit by a vision of Horus' fall, and to reach him and save him in time requires darker magic. It was a desperate attempt, fuck the order and go save your brother. Are you telling me that you would follow a damn order and let your brother, the literal WARMASTER OF THE ENTIRE HUMAN GALACTIC ARMY, die just like that? Just because daddy said "Stop using magic"? ____ "What about breaching Terra?'" The Emperor's fault, he built a damn hell hole inside his basement instead of like, the moon. Not only is he a sh*t father, have late stage cant-communicate-titis, but also a terrible planner and architect. My goodness, the Thousand Sons were already building their own webway at the time the Emperor was building his. He could have just told them since they were doing the similar things. It would have been faster if he made use of Magnus and his legion to aid his webway too.

There is much more nuance than most people give credit for, Magnus made bad decisions, but none of his decisions came from a place of malice. He loved his sons, and he was only arrogant because of the constant recognition he received for his talents. He was tricked by the literal chaos god of deception and trickery, whilst we could make fun of him for that, i'd imagine any primarch would be easily tricked by Tzeentch. Magnus wanted to pay for his arrogance, but seeing his sons die caused him to go out and fight, he made a rash last minute decision that got him and his legion fucked over in the end. He is a relatable character, he has flaws but he always tried to do good, its why I love him.

There are so many of these moments in the Horus Heresy, and one of the aspects I love about the series is how it goes from hope that the crusade is almost over, deep trauma over the start of the heresy to a sense of numbness that is exuded by various viewpoints as they try to get through the war. A couple of honorable mentions lie within the viewpoints of space marines and primarchs on the ground of Iistvaan as the traitor legions spring a trap on the raven guard, salamanders and iron hands. I also loved a scene during the istvaan bombing where loyalist world eaters threw themselves in the way of Angron as he fucked up Horus plan and charged to the surface. I can't remember exactly but I think the viewpoint character was one of the emperor's children, who mentions Angron to a world eater, and the world eater just pushes him aside and basically says that it is their fight and he should run away

In a series of short stories "Strike and Fade" and then "Unforged" follows four Salamanders surviving Istvaan V. Strike and Fade introduces Jo'Phor, grim Hae'Phast, neopyte Go'Sol, and the ever silent Donak and builds their character and provides hope in their plans of escape while ambushing the traitors wherever the opportunity presents itself. In Unforged they were seeking a drop ship signal in a cavern and arguing whether it is a trap or not. hey eventually proceeded to check it out. When they got to their destination they were ambushed by Loyalist forces. The Loyalist realize their mistake and cease fire but not before Donak who is the soul survivor lets out a scream, who is mute and makes no noise since the Drop-site massacre. JoPhor the leader lays dying of his wounds and Donaks screams is the last thing he hears. Shattered Legions is a worthy read. I recommend it.

I remember reading the fate of Captain Temeter and the dreadnought and being very moved by it. Even though they were very minor characters. I think the author described well the confusion and shock the loyalists felt when they were attacked by their own side. They died without knowing what it was all about.

But Anarch was really rough, so many main characters and side characters built up over years just die, some in horrible ways. Tears were the order of the day

I also have the scene where Maloghurst sacrificed himself to save Horus from the brink - especially when you realize just how pointless it was, as all it did was give Horus wholly to Chaos. At least even more than he was. There's also the fate of Ra Endimion, the final conversation between Curze and the Emperor (or what he though was the Emperor), or the death of Tarik Torgaddon on Istvann.

Group of old Thunder Warriors during the Heresy desperately trying to prolong their lives only because they're hoping they can catch an honorable death before their bodies fail completely, while reminiscing about the Unification Wars and drifting in and out of PTSD episodes, where they find themselves reliving old battles. Probably biased, because this reminds me of a lot of the WW2 veterans I grew up around.

I remember a story in the death watch anthology: the long vigil there was a white scar psyker that was originally shunned by his brothers after being added to the unit. His actions also lead upto the deaths of others in his squad when infiltrating a drukari vessel. He ultimately bonded with his brothers, moments before the ship selfdestructed, fighting along side the few remaining till the end. It wasn't a tear jerker but it was one of the few stories that left an impact on me versus the others

Yesugei's death in "Path of Heaven" made me cry hard: he was such a great guy for the Legion, his Khagan, and Ilya that you could feel their pain when he sacrificed himself so they could make it to Terra. Aregl Tal's death was also sad because it made me seethe some more at Erebus. Shadrak Meduson's death was ignominious as was his dad's and also a bunch of Ultramarine Captains at the beginning of the Battle for Calth in "Know no Fear". I could go on, but the sad moments in the lore are all well done.

During the siege, damaged dreanought of the White Scars was trying to rejoin his brothers. On the way he met guardsman who was hiding from the enemy. Not becasue of fear, but becasue he was protecting little child whose familij was killed. Together they moved foward, unfortunetly they were ambushed by traitors and guardsam was heavily wouned and dreadnaugt even more battered. He told the White Scar to leave him or all of them die, instead he took the child and dying guardsman with him regardless, knowing he can doom himself this way. That was sad af

Man Argel tals story will always be sad for me. The first time Cyrene died he got maybe a tiny bit of closure but the way it ended with him listening to that last recording before she got cut off part way through leaving that open ended. And then that didn't get brought up after she got brought back to life only for him to die thinking that he had failed her once again not realizing that she had escaped and assuming the worst that she had gone down with the ship. All that along with how his death effected everyone else especially Kharn just made his death and overall fate seem like just completely shitty, on one hand it's almost nice he died it's like putting down a sick and suffering dog but on the other the fact he never got any sort of closure for Cyrene and how it effected Khan just so sad.

I think for me the saddest moment in a 40k book was in the emperor's spears when the main character Anurhada is on the Pure ship and is doing bad, like "my eye socket is hella infected." The only reason she lived was her fellow Helot basically saving her life and taking in the leadership role amongst the enslaved loyalist serfs. Anurhada, who didn't even like her at first, grew to truly love her as a sister, and she never backed down from the chaos marines. When they tried to take Anhurada for torture she steps up and sacrifices herself to spare her. Unfortunately she comes back, this quivering lidless thing that can't even talk and Anurhada smothers quietly while holding her. It was honestly heartbreaking.
