Do they ever transfer power through optical cable. Most future cabling would be under sea because they are easy and recovered and maintenance and straight through connectivity. And power export to neighbors or distant countries including oil lines.

Enough energy to power the repeaters, not enough to export- that would need a different type of cable. Recovering them from 15,000 feet of water isn't exactly easy- lots of dragging hooks back and forth hoping to catch the right thing.

@@omariw845 I'm pretty sure the backbone of the internet will remain fiber for many, many decades there are undersea cables that can handle several Petabits with little latency and the cable is capable of so much more bandwidth we just don't have the equipment to send that data yet so plenty of space to grow as our data demands increase.

My first trip on one of these ships, we laid a cable from Whittier and Jeauno, Alaska to near Seattle, WA. Yes, they can be connected to other cables without too much trouble and ships can carry 5-8,000 miles worth of cable at once.

sheeplvl1, you're wrong. okay if the earth were rotating and 24 hours is one rotation then 12 hours is half way around the world. Then why does it take about the same amount of time to fly from NYC to asia (japan)? The plane to should against the rotation of the earth and arrive at the destination much quicker. Or you shouldn't even have to fly at all, just hover for 12 hrs, wait for the earth to have rotated half way around the world and just land it? Don't tell me atmosphere moves with the earth. If that is so then how do you explain hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms? Like hurricane sandy moved from the atlantic ocean then westward inland and we had no power for 5 days.

sheeplvl1, yes but that momentum ends pretty quickly. Let's say earth is spinning at 1000 mph right, airplanes travel at 500 mph, so then in 2 hrs we've gotten rid of that momentum. And thus are moving independently right? Therefore maybe 8 hrs you would arrive halfway around the world right? I'm not doing real math here. But it definitely should not be the same 13 or 16 hours travel time in both directions when traveling half way around the world. This only makes sense in a flat earth.

Does anyone know if the staff who work on this type of vessel can make voice or video phone calls? There is some guy who contacted me via a dating website. He claimed that he is working on a cable-laying vessel as a telecommunication engineer, therefore, he couldn't take my phone call because they have to hand in their own cell phones and ID; he can only text me using an encrypted device configured with his own sim card that he uses for work records and report. This sounds very fishy to me and also he mentioned he works six months on and 11 months off, which doesn't sound right also. I appreciate it if someone who worked on this type of vessel can provide some insight.
