1st and foremost this is awesome project and good video... love the window effect sugestion: 1. buy a 2' x 2' sheet of wood at desired thickness. sandwhich the 2 plexisheets to the wood sheet. (better than all those pieces 2. draw your pattern. drill your screws / bolt patterns and secure (head ache saver, use something with flush heads.. replace end product with desired bolts)... 3.cut with a fine tooth jigsaw blade ... or scroll saw. use a drill bit to make a starter hole when cutting out the center. note: monitor your blade & bit speed + pressure. doing it this way makes it easier to create all kinds of shapes... cut your designs out in cardboard for templates so you can easily reproduce. there are alot of cool spray paints out there to add texture effects to you final design... a super high sand paper helps smooth everthing out. if you own a router you could also inlay your plexit sheets.

@bradutsuciu32525 жыл бұрын
Hello. I haven't read all the comments but from those I did I did not see anyone actually answering to your request for design improvement suggestions. My first recommendation is to try using thicker wood for the frame. Not much but I would try double. And the strip in the middle at equal distance from the edges. Next, I would try using a slightly darker tint. Finally, I don't know if they are available in your area but there are some led strips with round leds. Not just the led is round, their plastic holder, too. The ones I used were smd 5050 if I remember correctly. And if you also manage to find led strip led strip with the actual strip being black instead of white, I believe that would make a big difference. Good idea and work!
@HowDoYouDIY5 жыл бұрын
There have been some comments about improvements, but most have been a bit general and not too specific. Like "make a different base" or "use different LEDs." I do appreciate all comments, but suggestions like yours that are very specific are awesome! Thanks for the tips!

I think for a DIY project this is a good start. Making it octagonal (or any other -gonal for that matter), is more appealing than just using a circular form.
@HowDoYouDIY6 жыл бұрын
I agree. This shape is a bit more interesting than a circle. Someone did mention making an oval with one side blue and the other side orange, like the game Portal. That would be cool too.
@WJRHalyn-jw2ho6 жыл бұрын
Interesting this stuff is only getting popular now. Back in the '70s, I was building these for friends, and even installed a large version in a buddy's van, back in the day when guys were tricking out their vans with fancy interiors, lighting, and air-brushed exterior artwork. Loved doing airbrushing back then, too, but the infinity mirror idea hit me when I was playing with a couple pieces of two-way mirror, and suggested it would make a great panel on a wall, or a table sculpture, so he paid for the materials and I put one together over the next couple days. It had a lighting controller that would allow the edge lighting to do a movie-marquee-style thing with any speed variation he wanted. This video's method is showing a way that's a little cheaper than buying pieces of actual 2-way mirror, which can get ridiculously expensive, depending on reflectivity grade.

Color Changing LEDs with a controler would make that definatively sicker. You can add a cut out of a character or something on a thin plastiglass, and set it in the middle, so that it gives the impression of someone going through, and since there's a gap between the cut out and each side of the mirrors, when you look at it at an angle it give some Perspective.
@HowDoYouDIY6 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking that exact same thing!
@v31c76 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Try to use a colored LED-strip. This strip should be able to change colors in a fluid way. Now experiment with some other materials than glas. For example emerald filters blue light. Imagine you would have a material reflecting red 55% yellow 45% and blue 50% and a second material reflecting red 48% yellow 50% and blue 47%. Everytime the light is reflected the color changes a little bit. In addition the colors on both sides will be different. Now comes the best, but here I am not sure if its works. If you find a filter behavior, that changes the source-color(t) in one or two steps of reflection into source-color(t+1), It could be able to make it look like a rainbow-whole moving in (maybe in a strange way).
@HowDoYouDIY6 жыл бұрын
That would be such an interesting effect! I'll definitely have to try that out!

Awesome project, I will likely make this. For cleaning up the wood glue, use a damp clothe to remove the excess glue. This will remove all of the residue so that it will not affect the final appearance of your project. You can do that once the glue sets a little bit. I would also suggest using sex bolts and mating screws. These will allow the bolt threading to be all internal so you won't see the large nut sticking off of the back of the infinity mirror. All-in-all this is a really simple and cool project, well done. Once question, what percentage level of tint did you use for the effect?
@HowDoYouDIY6 жыл бұрын

Nice video! Love the idea. If you want to have the same two-sided infinity effect but don't want anyone to be able to see it through the other side, You could've possibly placed two mirrors back to back and inlaid them in between the plexi glasses, although this does mean you would have a thicker mirror and would need to buy another set of LED strips.

I know I'm late, but you should consider using dowels for connecting all the joints, doesn't need to be much, but would definitely make it a lot more secure, and make the gluing process easier. You could also try using a darker tint on one side than the other. I'd also suggest using some low profile fasteners and counter sinking the plexi / frame, or even just going as far as to just use short low prfile wood screws and alternating the mounting points. Perhaps consider clear double sided tape for mounting the plexi, but that would likely ruin the tint if you ever needed to remove the panels. Considering the average lifespan of LEDs, though, it wouldn't be that bad of an idea to just glue the plexi on, and eliminate having the nuts / bolts stand out in general. Worst case, if you have an issue (years down the road) you just replace the tint and do some sanding to tear it apart. Just some food for thought.

Maybe put a dark tinted see through glass down the middle as to keep the two sided that u wanted and to focus on the mirror affect

Nice and easy (or at least you make it seem it's so). Will be building one for my grandchild. Thanks.

I wonder could you make the two mirrors be polarized and partially transparent? That way, if you offset the angle of the polarization no light goes through both mirrors. Only the light from the LEDs inbetween the mirrors would be able to escape creating a 2-sided infinity mirror.
