One transformer is a little bit to weak and also 14V is too low to support the arc reliably. Make 2 - 4 transformers and also make voltage about 35V at least It will be easier to work with.

Added to that, not a good idea to test it on rusted metal; that also promotes the sticking electrode effect.

It takes at least 35-40 volts to properly strike the electric arc. 45 volts or more is ideal.

Reduce your winding (yellow wire) so that you will have more current and lesser voltage. Use the smallest possible welding electrode, say 3/32. 1/8 will not work.

@@boyevangelista2661: it's a 220 V 200 ampere as the blogs says. Welding cable/s depend on the current, so choose a cable which has the rating of 200 amps. There's a table for size vs amperes, or better still go to them electrical store... and ask. Sometimes, it is printed on the cable itself.

With high temperature 12 gauge wires (~2.38 mm), you should get approximately 30 turns for the secondary coil. Any wire with insulation rated at 300°C will make the DIY welder easier and last much longer.

This sort of thing is useful amn having a plug and play arc welder in household electric board and weld is breakthrough stuff. The real deal is contacting welding rod manufacturers and asking them to make the mirco rods you need to weld things with this set up. So my advice make a micro welding collect data amps volts and contact welding rod manufacturers and get them to make the rods and then test it out. It could become a household item or device for millions of people who like to mircoweld things up

1/16" rod and about 4 more turns on secondary would produce better results. Secondary moving around like that will cause wear on insulation and possible short circuit. Tighter winding of secondary and packing core as full as you can get it would yield a tighter, more stable transformer. You're getting about 1 volt per turn on your secondary and the best results I've had has been above 23 volts with 1/16" rods. BTW, in case you don't realize it zinc poisoning is a real concern!

Also remember that the primary coils have to be connected un parallel I mean the same pin in each side left with left and right with right, when use more than one transformers and the secondary in serie..

Very good idea. The only problem is that a microwave transformer has a power of just over 1000 Watts while ARC welding inverters usually have around 4000 Watts. This limits soldering to small parts. But associating two transformers can double the power. To do this, just make two equal sets and connect the output wires in series (for no doubt, join one of the wires from one set to a wire from the other set and the output will be the two remaining wires, like this: out1 -- o --- o -- out 2) . A multimeter or an AC voltmeter should be used to verify that one is not inverted as follows: each set should provide an open voltage of approximately 30 volts AC. After connecting in series, the output voltage must be the sum of the voltages of the two sets, if it is the difference, invert the wires of one of them. The ideal open voltage for ARC welding is approximately 50 to 60 volts. If it is larger, thicker wires with fewer turns must be used in each transformer, which increases the current capacity and decreases the voltage. And, as shown in the video, always check the heating of the windings of the two transformers, eventually interrupting the use until they get colder. In this case a fan can be useful.

I am in Canada. By default home power is 110 v. If you want to use 110 how could you do this
@professorg8383
@professorg8383 Жыл бұрын
@@DanielJAudette Turns out any of the microwave transformer welding projects are going to be difficult with the lower primary voltage. Currents will be lower. It's almost impossible to find old microwave transformers with a 230 primary winding, even on ebay. I would have thought it a bit easier in Canada because I believe parts of Western Canada still use 220volt household. In the US we use 240/120 volt 3 wire as the residential standard. Typical appliances are all 120 volt. But wiring a dedicated 240volt circuit for these welders would be the easiest solution, if you can find the transformers. It's the turns ratio of primary to secondary that makes this work effectively. There's a few tricks you can use like less windings in the secondary. This helps a bit and I have built a decent spot welder for light gauge stuff. May be building a two transformer version that should be better running it on 240 volts. His stick welder here is garbage though. No matter what he does, it will lack penetration to make real welds.

Connecting transformers in series will not increase current strength but will double the voltage,.. current stays the same, parallel connection will double the current strength but voltage level stays the same Sir🤗
@professorg8383
@professorg8383 Жыл бұрын
@@simanga999 Connect the primaries in parallel but run the secondary cable in series through each transformer. You are correct in that the current will not be raised but the voltage will double if the transformers are the same and the secondary wraps are equal to each other. (they must be in phase with each other so they add and not buck). What this will do is increase the voltage and the total power being dissipated in the arc. So about double the power with the same current. On the Primary side, the total current for the two parallel primaries will be double. Instead of about 1000 watts it will be 2000 watts. The higher voltage will carry the arc better. You can connect multiple transformers this way with parallel primaries and series secondaries. You can end up with something close to a small welder output. Not great and not very efficient.

You're some genius trying to weld rust
@aaronmontgomery1304

Many comenters have mentioned build improvements and they may have a point but the biggest problem I saw was how the part was grounded. A dirty, partially painted screw leading to a dirty/greasy ball joint and then through a dirty/rusty vice jaw makes for a terrible path for electrical flow and the rusty metel just made things worse. The zinc coating on the bolts is not only dangerous to breath but acts like a coolant and adds impurities and the carbon/slag from it burning can also insulate the metal and disrupt the arc. Simply having all clean metal and welding conections would have made a tremendous difference.

Buddy you need to spread the load on multiple transformers because your welder won't last long since the wire you used to make the secondary plus the mass of the transformer isn't enaugh to handle more that 30 amps. Next time try with 4 MOTs and on the secondarys use 8 turns of 4.5-5.5mm copper wire per transformer connected in series!

good,, but they need to be in phase....connect it to supply, and be sure all are wired in series; correctly and safely. with no load, open secondary output, measure voltage from one sec side to the output of each xfrmr.....if it is the same after the second one as the first, reverse the 2 second xfrmr wires......do the same for all. You should find the output adding up as you go along. ideal is 48 to 52 volts ac output. Depending on the efficiency of the xfrmrs, you should have between 13 to 16 turns of #8 or #6 wire. its hard to find thin walled insulated wire in this range, but good on you. it'll work.......old tech. Grind off the welds, take off the piece, rewind tightly, and assemble and weld up laminations....good luck
