upCycle... now there's a word dying to become an everyday descriptor for taking something broken and making it into something more than it was before. Also great work btw. Gotta love busted to beautiful

Thanks for the explanations throughout the video. I don't necessarily need them but I know there are a lot of people out there that are still new to working metal. I love videos of repurposing items! Giving new life to a broken or forgotten item is what I do with knives and tool restorations. You have given me another idea for when my bits break. Keep it up!

Very glad I found this post because I've decided to make some bowls and spoons this summer and have no gouges! I do however, have lots of metals, old tools and a forge and anvil! I should be able to make a few gouges for various sizes of bowls and spoons. THANKS!

May I suggest that you only hit the high carbon steel when its cherry red. Hitting and forming it when black or grey will form cracks in the steel, ruining the chisel.

i thinking i will for next x mass,,, as i have two friends that every x mass i make us each a home made tool for the last 3 yrs, now,, from large mallets ,small tapping mallets, for chisel work , and this year it a awl with curly maple handle and old Allen keys, , they come out amazing,, and the allen key steel holds a point very well , ps, look for the longer type allen key, , 1-2$ at a yard sale for a set ,lol 4-6" + in length and cut off the L portion and insert in your handle , i chose the black hardened allen;s and not the chromed ones for look , ,,, been wanting a spoon carving gouge for years now,, and your idea fits that build tks ,
