If you don't have a drill press but do have a hand held drill, you can still drill the small holes accurately (bit prone to wandering if drilled by hand), if you mark out with a scriber and square where the holes will go on the face of the angle iron and file a small groove into each piece with a 3/8" (10mm) wide triangular file (maybe don't snap the small drill as easy either!) When placed together (with the pieces of paper between!) the 2 grooves form a hole (only needs to be bigger than the chisel point on the drill), that will guide the drill easily and accurately - jv

That's awesome! I considered making on of these when I did my control cables, but I was too lazy. But you showing how easy it is to make convinced me to make on the next time. I actually also considered 3D printing one, what do you think about that? You don't have to use too much force when hammering the bird cage so a 3D printed tool might hold up.

It’s definitely worth it. I also tried 3d printing it. That one broke on the first try. However, I had the layers run horizontally. That gives cleaner holes but also creates a weak point in the corner. It might work if you print the parts with 90 degree rotated layers. If you want I can send you the file.
