This is amazing. Made my evening finding you. Starting a new job after being off for a bit and so much to buy... Seeing this has made me feel like I could make a few bits like the pad. Think I'd need to make a guard aswell but honestly food for thought ❤

Thank you so much! I've been saving to buy a kit for ages, and I don't know why I never thought that I could make a gilders cushion myself. I have a tip for raised illumination, which is a piece of thin plastic stapled to a piece of cardboard, and it works brilliantly. Not sure how it would work on a larger scale for a full leaf, but great for smaller pieces.

I was surprised that some of these tools could be made at home. It is an expensive hobby and anything that can be done to lower the barrier to entry is welcomed. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this, I've recently started collecting the tools to try this out, but most of the stuff is quite expensive here in Canada. Cheers!

Thanks for the great démonstration that a good result doesn’t necessairly depend of expensives tools ! Have you got a cheap way to build a heat table for glue chipping too please ? Thanks for your vidéos that are my number one reference for this beautifull hobby.

Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful! I now use tube heaters for glue chipping. The kind you use in a greenhouse. They're really cheap and more importantly they only cost 1p per hour to run.

Mate, I used to do a lot of pin stripping and gold leaf work starting in the 1960's .... I always took my "French" Quills and my pin stripping brushes, clean in a jar with a coiled spring in the bottom and thinners. Then really pack the the hairs with vaseline petroleum jelly. To my surprise I hadn't used the quills (I had new sign writer's brushes) since about 1984 ... I found the tin box with them, cleaned them,re-oiled them with linseed oil... cleaned again and they worked like new.... what I'm saying , if you spend the big dollars on good equipment, take the time to treat and maintain them... they'll last you a life time.. You as always put out some clever idea mate....thanks

Cheers Ken! I completely agree mate and I think the tools I made in this video will last just as long as the ones you can buy for nearly 10 times the price. Hope you're still enjoying the sun. It's getting better here now so I'm perking up a bit :)

Excellent advice! My dad taught us to make whatever we need - as much as possible. Regarding your water size: It's steaming for the first gold leaf application … like a hot cup of coffee? Is the heat necessary - did you reheat it for the second layer of gold leaf?
@happygilder
@happygilder Жыл бұрын
Thanks Heidi! A hot cup of coffee is the perfect temperature to get the size mix too. Just before boiling point. I don't reheat size but you can use it for a few hours until you need a new batch. It doesn't need to be hot to use, just to dissolve the gelatin :)

Hey Happy Guilder. Hope my comment finds you well. I wanted to ask a couple of questions - what difference does the sand blasting do to the glass before you gold leaf it? Does it texture it? I would like to make a mosaic with gold backed glass for a project....can you glue the glass onto a backing after you have gold leafed them or will they debond due to the leaf? Many thanks!
@happygilder
@happygilder Жыл бұрын
Hi Freddie, if you want to gild sandblasted glass you’ll need to apply a clear gloss lacquer first because gold won’t stick to etched glass. After gilding you should back the leaf up with sign writing enamel and then it’ll be fine to glue to something :)

Great video. I am learning a lot from watching your videos. I recently have a fluted glass door which I would like to do reverse glass wih gold leaf. But the issue is due fluted glass, the surface of the glass is not flat at all thus make it seems to be impossible to do reverse glass sign.... Do you have any advices when it comes to fluted glass?
@happygilder
@happygilder Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you're finding the vids helpful! I've never worked with fluted glass. The gold should go on without any problems, but painting a design onto it will be tricky. Sorry I can't offer any useful advice on this
