I am attempting to gold leaf letters that have been sandblasted into the back of a thick cast glass piece. The piece will be viewed through the clean flat side of the glass. While the 23k gold is bright and beautiful on the side it is applied, it is dull on the side that it will be viewed. is there a way to prep the sandblasted engraving so that it is bright on the viewing side?

Hello Paul, I have a cast glass grave marker, and I would like to go leaf lettering on the marker and then back it with a dark marbleized enamel. Is the proper process to Gold leaf the lettering first and then email all the whole back over the lettering? it is 2 inches thick so it is very difficult to maneuver. my intention is to cast it in cement at ground level when it is finished. I would send a photo, but I don’t think your comments allow photos. Thank you in advance.
@chrishawthorne520911 күн бұрын
I should’ve proofread it before I sent it. The question is, is the proper process to gold leaf the lettering and then enamel over the entire back of the piece on top of the gold leaf?
@happygilder11 күн бұрын
@ You can do it either way. Some people prefer to paint the surface leavint the letters clear for gilding, and some prefer to do the letters first, back the gold up, and rub away the excess before painting the rest. It's up to you, there's no right or wrong way.

Great video Paul..... Can I ask a very quick basic question, how different is the preparation for making the screen itself when its going to be used for glass as opposed to tshirts, for example? If I was to go to a company that screen prints tshirts, should they also be able to screen print onto glass is I suppose what I'm wondering? Thanks again!!!

Thanks for the tutorial; I've been following along step by step on the paper in front of me and I'm happy with the result. As for shaky hands, may I suggest that rather than apologizing for them, that you show how you compensate: you aren't the only one with them and many times its the way to overcome difficulties that nobody talks about but that make the difference in a good picture.

@happygilder25 күн бұрын
@@Mr.Peabody961 hi, the glue retracts from the outside so trimming it to the edge of the vinyl gives the neatest finish and minimises the risk of the chip extending beyond where you want it. Glad you’re enjoying the vids!!

Thank you for the video. I've been using Photoshop since it started, but always find it useful watching other people's methods and I always pick up some tips that I find useful even after all these years. You explain your methods very clearly and in a relaxed way, so that any beginner could follow and make use of your process. I'm only just starting out on my glass gilding 'journey' (having come from a photography and web design background ... and wanting to do something a bit more traditional), and I have yet to make anything on glass, but have watch quite a few of your videos. Saving up for one of Dave Smith's gilding course, but can't quite justify the expense at the moment (course fees and materials), but have learnt quite a bit of theory from your channel, so will maybe dip my toes into something practical soon. Looking forward to the next video.

I have a degree in fine art, but over the last 20 years I found out as a teacher Most Uni students I had here in Australia couldn't draw well, plus many companies would send me images they wanted for signage or promotion was often sent in adobe or corel draw ... I still have my photoshop in CC as well as illustrator. Again thanks for the effort mate with for signage Corel draw works well and is simple. I just bought a new Dell tower as ALL my other units in the factory were custom built. Again thank you... before I forget I have tried "Kittle" great software for ideas, but I'm not big on AI for my designs... to each his own.

This works more for imitation gold and aluminum leaf but you can use a blue shop towel or even a cheap paper coffee filter. It leaves a pretty good polished scratch. You might need a more full turn than you use for genuine gold. It works really well with a drill, you just need to change the paper if you are doing a large area because the paper will burnish and lose its tooth making it more polish spin than a nice record groove spin. Thanks for sharing this one! oil gilding and turning takes practice, this hopefully helps folks use up less supplies playing guess work.
