I'm the biggest fan of repurposed DIY. I find that the ideas for reusing existing items as components for other items comes from being poor and not getting many gifts as a kid. Couple that with having a grandpa that could make snow out of charcoal and you start to see the potential in just about anything

I agree fully, I grew up poor and I was into music and I spent a lot of time like sooo many hours stuck at the auto restoration shop my parents ran and I would just try to take stuff apart and wire up tons of old speakers out of cars to an old 8 track player and fiddle with wires and take the little motors out of toy cars and try to build stuff. So eventually I figured out if I wanted to have stuff I couldn't afford Id just have to cobble it together somehow like I used to do with all that stuff at the shop. The internet has been the greatest tool in this whole thing so I decided to try to show everyone else that they can do the same thing and maybe it'll help someone out and it gives me some pennies pay for more junk to hack up LOL

super cool - i went down a similar road when i made the paper clip motor . i used a drill .i broke my wire of course a few times and ultimately set it up with 6 inches of spare wire coiled around the spin shaft and then maskin taped . that ended up working well for me . the paperclip motor was one that killed me the first few times but eventually i got it and man that felt good .

Yes if you can get to both ends of the coil from a shaver or a choke coil from an amp abny similar coil and put a magnet on it and some ferrous metal to use as a pole or blade it will def. work as a pickup. The magnet type will shape the sound as well as what you use as the pole or blade. I have been using neo magnets lately and man are they loud and clear and great bass response. In fact I just got the idea of using both winds in a wall wart (ac adapter) transformer to make a humbucker or noiseless pickup. I dont know if that would work or if the transformer body would cancel the signal but, its worth a test. I am going to put that in my notes and if/when I make a video about it I will give you a shout-out for inspiring the idea. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave feedback Jose. As well as showing a genuine interest. With the terminals I just put 2 small screws in the back and wrapped the magnet wire around them and soldered it on to them. One end of the coil to each. Then I soldered the lead wires to them. The wire coming from the outside of the coil will be the negative lead wire or ground. but it will still work if connected backwards it will just hum a bit more. I apologize for not having a better shot of it in the video or explaining it better. I had no Idea that video or this channel would do this well. I plan on making the videos clearer and more detailed in the future I have recently acquired much better video equipment. I hope this helps in some way. Thanks again Jose.

You can clean the shielding off the end of the broken wire with nail polish remover, and join the broken ends with some solder

The wires are called crocodile or alligator clip test leads. they sell them at harbor freight or you can get them in bundles on amazon for pretty cheap . To hook the pickup to the cord you must go from one pickup lead to the tip of the cable and one lead to the base of the cord or the metal part that you touch to plug it in. and you generally want the lead coming from the outside of the coil to go to the base of the cable.

I use a small speaker magnet and made my pickup with it. It had the following problems. It sounded to low , It was refusing to work in a bass amplifier Then stopped working . I want to ask can my coil not be the problem or magnet. I didn't take time to coil it in order can it be a problem too.!!!

I would just check the solder points the coil can be "scattered" and it will be fine that is actually a very desirable quality in high end pickups but if it worked enough to make sound at first then stopped you just lost connection somehow either a bad solder joint or a broken coil wire. To make it louder and make it work with the bass amp you will need a bigger coil or a stronger magnet, both would be good the higher the resistance "length of coil wire" and the stronger the magnet the louder it will be.

Mindful you can't use a electromagnetic pickup with nylon strings need a microphone kind of pickup so you have to have a diaphragm in order to pick up the acoustic sound waves. What I did when I was a youngster years ago was I used speakers. a speaker is just a reverse coil so if you put your lead wires to the speaker it becomes a microphone I used to run that to my amplifiers so maybe you can get a small speaker and put it inside your acoustic guitar nylon strings in them it should work I don't know what the response would be quality wise. you can give it a try

Thank you both for watching and taking the time to write comments Yes Mandala, Tom is correct you cannot use a magnetic pickup on a nylon stringed instrument also using a speaker is a very good suggestion, their are also many different types of piezo element their are small ones and big ones and ones that are like a strip and ones that are made into the bridge saddle you may experiment with different types and different placement of them like under the bridge or against the I beam or even against the underside of the top in different locations or even wire 2 in or out of phase or even in series like a piezo "humbucker" If you listen to Willie Nelson and his guitar Trigger that is a piezo bridge on a nylon stringed guitar and it sounds very good. A preamp with eq would also go a long way in getting the sound you want.

Yes it is similar in a way it also has a very small alternating current but it is produced in a different way. A piezo uses a crystal being smashed or pressed on to release electricity a pickup uses a magnet and wire to create electricity from the changes in a magnetic field. kind of like a generator or car alternator. It needs a metal object like the string to produce energy as where a peizo just needs vibration so it can work on a plastic string.

Go for it Salem! It may take a bit of fiddling or a few tries to get a really good one but, its not too hard at all. Wind it as much as you can. The more winds of wire you use the stronger and louder it will be. Also stronger magnets like neodymium will make it work better as well.

No this should be classic P90 type so magnet is under the metal bars that goes to the strings. Enought magnetic force for efective induction. It’s not perfect pickup since it’s really weak for what it should be. But sounds OK.

Usually you connect the outside end of the coil to ground to prevent hum... but, this shouldn't stop it from working either way. The first thing I would check is the solder points on the coil wires and if they look good or a re-solder doesn't change anything. I would check "continuity" or in english: if the coil is broken in side and not continuous you can do this with a multi-meter as you saw me do in the video it should have some amount of resistance but if it checks at zero then it is "open" or disconnected. Another thing may be that it just doesnt have enough winds to be loud enough to hear. The pickup in the video was very weak at only about 1000 winds so I had to crank the gain on the amp to 10. A production pickup like a p90 or tele/strat may have between 5000-9000 winds. More winds = louder, more magnet = louder a pickup with a 2 neodymium bar magnets and 13000 winds would be an insane loud distortion monster. I hope that helps if not dont give up. try it again or a few times, you will get one to work. Thank you for your time and comment.

I would think that either the wire had gotten a short in it somehow or maybe the pickup was under wound so It may have benefited with a boost pedal or the distortion setting of an amplifier. I hope you got it working in the end and if not just try again, you can do it... wind it 5x more than you think it needs and use a strong magnet and crank the amp wayyy up.

Thanks for watching Wallace Sessions. NO unfortunately this will not work for a nylon string guitar. Its awesome that you are building one. You will need a piezo element to pick up the vibrations directly. They can be bought online or found in talking greeting cards and some small toys. They are also sometimes used as the voice coil of cheap tweeters.

Yes that pickup really needed about 5x times that much wire atleast but luckily I was just able to turn up the amp loud enough that it was a decent volume. It wasnt noisy with all that gain either because it was only 52 ohms away from being shunted to dead ground... Hahaha!

@@heavymetalATC Yeah, today I tried to make a pickup today, because i prefer a electric over acoustic guitar, but i only have an acoustic. I took thin copper wire out of a transformer from a broken walmart clock, and i kept winding, and winding, and winding, but eventually it broke like yours did. I stopped there and connected it with some screws for a terminal, but unfortunately i dont know why, but i tested it with a multimeter and it was not conductive at all. No beeps. also didnt get anything from the resistance setting. I eventually tried, and I noticed it was making 0.030-80 volts, but it didnt increase when i strummed. I did use neodynium magnets since i saw your video on how the myths for them are false, so i did. Will try and get some actual 40 gauge wire meant for pickups soon. Hopefully it works, because i prefer electric, not acoustic. Also, how do i test if it makes and sound if i do not have an amp?

@@nicksloan9323 Its awesome to hear you are experimenting NIck. It sucks that the first one didnt work out for you but I think if you keep at it you will definitely end up with a working pickup. If you have a stereo with an rca input you could try to check the pickup on that or also hooking it to the microphone input on a computer but really you need some kind of high gain device especially with a homemade pickup in case it is weak, maybe you can find one of those really small battery powered amps somewhere for cheap or you could look into converting a battery powered radio or walky talky etc.

It really was... As much as I did wind it I was planning on winding it a lot more but the wire broke. I would say it was less that 1000 winds and a telecaster bridge pickup can have about 9000. Thanks again Haroon.

The magnet wire broke and I didn't feel like trying to solder that baby hair size stuff back together. Most pickups have thousands of winds. I think telecaster bridge pickup has around 9000. I redeemed myself though for the next pickup vids I used a sewing machine to wind and got them filled up. Thanks again.

Hahaha ok, soo I have no idea how much wire I used but it wasnt even 20% as much as I should have used.. Use as much wire as will fit on there 1)to get the most chance of loud strong volume 2) If you get a fault in the wire somewhere or if the first one dont work? you can use all that extra wire to do a repair or wind another sometimes they work great first try sometimes its a MF? Later on I started using a sewing machine to wind, I have yet to build a legit winder but I do have the parts. Thanks for the sub, I was absent on the channel for a long while but I was building up stuff to hit it with gusto on the way back, I got a full guitar shop in action now. And yes it was a deal to do and I didnt wind it nearly as much as I wanted since the wire broke. So in the later pickup videos I used a sewing machine to wind them up to 7-8 thousand and get a good clear barky sound. Thanks again for the funny feedback. This kinda stuff really makes my day better.

Hahaha 🤣 yeah, I think mostly it's just paying the people that have done all the research and experience to make perfect tones on que consistently BUT... We can all 100% wind our own pickups and it almost always turns out that hand winding sound clearer and better than most store bought stuff due to scatter and less coupling.
