After I've laid out my blocks how I want them, I take a photo or two with my cell phone before I start picking up blocks to sew together. Makes it much easier to figure it out if I get confused about the order.

Simple but really lovely! And the fabric is gorgeous. In order to be able to pick up all my blocks from the floor in one go (or else my cats will mess up the order) I used some flower pins and wrote numbers on them with a Sharpie. That way I know in which order I need to sew them and which way is up.

I had a tough time choosing a favorite but since I needed to I guess it would choose the "Half Square Triangle"; around the world. It is because of the versatility of this block. You can make a quilt with either your layer cakes or the charm packs. The different lay-outs and patterns are endless and it is so easy to do with quick satisfaction. To keep mine straight, once I do my lay out, I use small pieces of masking tape, and label rows from top to bottom, A, B, C, D, etc. And blocks from left to right, 1, 2, 3, etc. So block "C-2" would be 3rd row from top, 2nd block from left. This way if I can't finish putting top together at one time, no worries about getting things mixed up. And the masking tape peels off easy when you need it off, with no residue!

I'm a fairly new quilter. I've discovered, if I sew off the edge while sewing around all 4 sides, then cut thru where the two sew lines come together, mine came out so much more square and needed less trimming. This REALLY helped when I used 2 different designers for the different fabrics, since the pre-cut 10" were not exactly the same size. (pick one designers fabric and sew your 1/4" seam according to that fabric)

Thank you for a great tutorial Missouri Star Quilt Company and Jenny! I'm currently working on my first, pieced quilt using this method. I used the floor to lay it out as well, taking photos after laying it out. Doing this, enabled me to see how the colours looked. Each time I rearranged pieces, I'd take another photo until I found the most pleasing (to ME anyway, lol) layout. Now I'm sewing the squares into rows, using the final photo as a guide☺️. I keep reviewing the video to make sure I'm following the steps in order. Jenny, you are so easy to follow and LISTEN to! Please keep up your wonderful tips and tricks😍

I love that half square triangle method and used it recently in what has become a really interesting quilt. My question though is is there a good rule of thumb for how big the new squares will turn out?

Not sure if you will ever see this, but I came back to this video to refresh my memory on how Jenny made fast HSTs, and I just calculated for myself the size. If you want a rule of thumb, it is to divide the seam length by 1.4 to get the new size square. So a 10" square will have a 9.5" seam (because you leave a quarter inch on each end), so divide that by 1.4 and you get 6.78", which she trims down to 6.5." If you want to go in reverse, multiply by 1.4, and then add the half inch seam allowance back. (Want 5" HSTs, then 5*1.4=7 and add the seam allowance so start with 7.5" squares (or a little bigger and trim down for exact blocks).

Probably, just split the quilt where it makes sense when you are piecing the HST’s together.
