Do you need to put something on the back of the coaster like cork or is the wool absorbent?

The wool is absorbent but you absolutely could put a backing on it if you prefer it. I do believe that there are some coatings that can be sprayed onto felt to help protect them but I do not not what they are or have used them myself. Obviously you don't want to "wash" the coasters as this would effectively wet felt them an they will shrink :)
