Make A Square Top For A Sonotube // The How And The WHY? // Barn Build

In today's video, we answer the why. We have been getting some questions on why we went to the trouble of adding the square top to the sonotube. This video shares an overview of how we made the square top and the reason why we went to the extra work to make a square top for the sonotubes. We hope this helps and makes more sense and gives you a little insight into our thought process. Please let us know what you think. What would you have done differently?
We are excited to bring you along on these beginning steps of our barn build. The goal for this summer is to get the slab poured and then to mill A LOT of lumber to use for the build. ***We are also finishing up our sawmill cover / sawmill shed build. If you haven't checked out our Sawmill Cover Build from the beginning, definitely check out the playlist. We have shared the process of building this sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and live in North Idaho. This sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between! We are excited to complete this project, so we can continue milling lumber for our barn build.
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we are building:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We will be sharing the entire build!

Thanks very much for explaining why you put square concrete pads on top of Sonotubes. Now it makes sense to install 'board and bat' to shed the rain water. Blessings to you as you proceed with the next phase of your barn build.

crisis averted....was so scared for you on how you where going to place the squares on the sonotubes AFTER filling them. But didn't know how to explain myself without sounding like a know it all. Glad it worked out. Now get some tar paper on that sawmill shed☺

This looks like a good plan. Looking forward to seeing the assembly, but there is a lot of milling to be done first. Hope that you have good weather this summer to make it go better. Are you going to mill and assemble all of the bents before starting to stand them up or will you stand some up before milling and assembling the rest?

Thanks, Mike! The plan right now is to have all the timbers and exterior components milled before assembling the vents. I think I’ll assemble the center section bents then add the wings after the center part is assembled. Still thinking through that. 😊

Did you have a structural engineer do a set of drawings and spec's for the piers and building?

Hi, Chris, no, we did not have a structural engineer design the piers. We felt like we over built with the size and depth. And instead of making a cage we put three pieces of rebar in each hole. Vibrating it was debated and ultimately decided that it wasn’t necessary. Big foots in the corners was mainly a cost issue. We are far from professionals but do our best to gather as much information as we can and make a decision and go with it.
