Our Dream in the Woods

3 ай бұрын

In this video, we share that we are abandoning the house build, explain the turning point and talk about the new plan and why everything had to change. It was very disheartening when we realized we couldn't afford to build the house we wanted, but in the end, it's a good thing and we are excited to live in a barn house that we built ourselves and can afford.
Here's a link to our FIRST video where we share our original plans and Beth shares why she doesn't want to live in a shop house or shouse:
• HOMESTEAD Plan // Shar...
Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from @BarnGeek . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home.
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Howdy y’all- life has its changes and it’s quite ok to change your plans for what will actually work for you. When I built our log house thirty years ago I started with the mindset that I had to stay with it until it was finished. Don’t let discouragement on how slow things might seem at the time get you down. I have been doing custom building for many years and things never go as fast as expensive. I have noticed you are a perfectionist and that will be a strong point for you. In timber framing a huge portion of the strength is in the fit of the joinery. I wish y’all the very best with everything. My only regret is that you are so far away because I would love to do some joinery with you. Take care and God’s blessings to y’all

Hi, Paul, of course you are always welcome to come for a visit anytime! I am worried about timelines and yes I am a bit picky on how things come out. I keep reminding myself that this is a monster project but I need to take moments to enjoy it. Look forward to your insight as this project progresses. 😊

It's your home. I am impressed that you have adjusted your initial build to reflect the changed reality while allowing for the completion of a permanent residence. The plans to me seem very straight forward and comfortable while not presenting a complicated build that will allow much of the construction to be completed single handed if necessary. Your construction schedule seems very aggressive so I would advoid any new distractions and get going ASAP, Good Luck. Ray Stormont

We've come to realize the same reality in Kootenai County and have scrapped our house plans for a barndominium build using most of our original house plans. We've been living in our shop apartment the last 1 1/2 years anyway. Good luck on your journey!

Thank you! Yep. We both live in beautiful areas and a lot of other people want to live here, too and that drives up costs. Our architect said…it’s not just the millionaires that have discovered our area, it’s the billionaires. 😳 So, like you, we had to change our plan. We just didn’t want to be house poor and make a ton of sacrifices for the first house. So, on to this new plan. Wishing you good luck on your barndominium build! 😊

I'm sure that this was a hard decision. My advice to both of you is to not play the "what if" or "we should have" games. You have made the best choice for yourselves at the time and now you need to go forward. I have a 36 x 32 garage that I built almost completely by myself. I had help doing the concrete and handling heavy materials, but I drove every nail myself. It gives me a sense of pride and satisfaction to look at the garage and know that I built it. You will be able to have the same feelings about your new home when it is complete. Yes, your home won't be what you once had planned, this will be different. But you can make it yours and it will be something that many people can only dream about doing. I wish you good luck. Thanks for bringing us along on your journey.

YOUR DREAM IN THE WOODS IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. Thank you both for sharing your dream and vision. I rock the same way here in northern California. You are following in the path of our ancestors that built this country. The schedule, get in shape and stay in shape. Don't hurt the human machine. One stage at a time, but...with forward vision for the next stage. You will succeed. Questions??? Lay them out there but be careful of overload. I personally would not allow those old piers to be incorporated into the new slab. Differential settlement will occur and will eventually Crack the slab. Let her float. Simply isolate the old piers with a piece of 1/4" foam. Great work sir, my best to the you and the family. Really good stuff 👏

Great advice Todd! This is going to be a marathon not a sprint. And we don’t have the same youth that we had twenty years ago. I’m looking into the 1/4 inch foam- thank you for the tip. 😊

Hi, David- you are right. It doesn’t make sense if you know you are adding plumbing to the build….But, we didn’t. This was just supposed to be a barn. It was never going to be our home. Currently, the plumbing and new slab are in and it looks great. Sometimes, plans change and this is what is best for our family. ❤️

I know a couple who built a large home so their grandchildren could have plenty of room. Their grandchildren never visit and they live there, the 2 of them in this huge 6 bdrm home by themselves, just rattling around inside. Don't plan for your grandchildren. That's the parent's job. Rather, build a cozy abode that is low maintenance/cleaning for your latter years.

This home will be perfect for just us and for when guests come. Originally, Beth thought if we built a barndominium, it would be a small (like an apartment) living space and mostly shop. What we are building is more like a 3 bedroom home, so it’s going to be just right. 😊

My best guess for your time line would be next October. You didn't sound like you had a ten man crew working on this? I'm just making my comment. They slap houses together here and I watch them go up and probably never use a level or a square. But I know that you and I are not like that because a square or a level is the first thing we grab. Good Luck.
