Quality work, Lynn! The light is great, the base is great, but what I really was interested in was the third hand clips. Most 3rd hand tools don't hold in place well at all, so I've been looking for good ideas on how to make the arms. Having them able to pop in and out of the base is real good too. Thanks.

Thanks for motivating me Over the few years i've had a third hand (mananged for over 40 years without one), i've been wanting to change it around because it was sometimes awkward for holding wires for soldering, but kept putting it off because i wasn't sure any of my ideas would work, i was basing it around the original base, your use of a larger wood base was what i needed. My version isn't pretty, but it's now more functional

What a neat design! A solved light problems using cheap ikea aluminium frying pan(as heatsink and cover) and 6x 10W 12V leds, with cheap notebook adapter as power source. I've used tap and die(M3) directly into pan to hold the leds in place. My design looks "how ya do 'in" a little bit. Thanks for your video. Oh and I probably fell in love again! (to creep it up a little bit)

Yes Linn, very nice work. Most impressed with your range of knowledge & level of workmanship. Now THAT'S the best soldering third hand I've ever seen! It looks high quality, sturdy, stable and robust. The arms don't wiggle like in all the other such projects I've seen until now. Congratulations on the idea and its execution with attention to details. I respect such thoughtfulness and work. No need to watch more, I've decided already: subscribe. :) PS.Have you thought about selling this item as a kit or ready-to-use product for those who need a high quality third hand and don't have time or possibility to make one?

Hey Linn! I like what you are doing here on youtube, thanks for the inspiration and instructions for things! And maybe a little tip for you. I saw you were drilling the aluminum dry, and aluminum is kinda sticky. Most of the times it helps to put some spirit (you know, the blue stinky burning liquid) on your drill and workpiece. A little WD-40 helps also. Keep it up!

That's cool Linn! That light looks incredibly bright. Perfect for intricate work. The only thing I'd have to say that I scratched my head over was how you screwed on the mesh on the bottom... I think screwing the corners down, instead of the sides, would prevent the corners from getting catches and bending out of shape as you move it. Other than that, I love it! Nice touch making it a "signature piece" too! Cheers!

Good project and very well done - loved the machining and your skill. A better choice for LED would be the Cree XML @ 3V, 2.5A. Lot more lumens per watt, comes with custom optics (You could choose focus, spread, dispersed etc based on what you are working on) and also the electronics is lot simpler. You could derive power for this from a Li-Po pack or 18650 laptop batteries and a few components to drive it in CC mode with brightness control.
