This uke build is probably the most savage i've seen on youtube, yet it's the one that has brought me the most joy.

Your method for glueing the boards together for the top and back was beautiful in its simplicity. Four nails and a weight. When I think of some of the complicated clamping jigs I've jerry-rigged over the years, and this simple elegant solution was there all along. Nice.

Philip - I love your videos and the series on the ukelele build process is excellent. I am amazed at what you do with simple tools and reclaimed wood. Thank you so much for sharing tips. I especially like your ideas on rosettes. The best!

Lindo trabalho e arte! Saudações do Brasil!

A fine effort and the result looks great! Don't worry about your 'unorthodox methodology' plenty of our ancestors made instruments with only what they had. If it makes music, it's a success!

Great video Phil. I saw the notification as I was leaving for work and have been looking forward to seeing it all day. I see inspiration here, did you watch Matthias Wandel's videos on his attempt to build a quick cheap uke, and the videos he posted of Pat Hawley professionally doing it? Great series and this is something Id consider of the likes.
@PhilipStephens0075 жыл бұрын
I thought I might have missed your time zone :) (almost posted it the night before but was drained doing the subtitles) Yes, I watched Matthias, but got lost on his fret calculations as I do not have the all so important 'function' on my calculator. So, I learned watching several others. 'Susan Gardner' explained, in depth, the open string adjustment, and someone did an excellent excel spreadsheet calculator tutorial, and there were a few compass and ruler vids, so I got the concepts those ways. (Still haven't quite grasped the square root of two though) . I learned so much, and it is not such a scary subject now. I just finished one for a friend, have another 6 on the way, and after posting today, had a 'cuatro' (Colombian ukulele) arrive to fix. It is an education in itself and worth a video of its own. It is still only hobby status though and these ones will be going to 'good causes'.

@@PhilipStephens007 Awesome video Philip very inspirational. When I think about all those pricey and exclusive luthier tools and your tools and the way follow to get things done I remember my formal instruction with all those machines and fancy tools, I prefer your style.
@Dresdentrumpet4 жыл бұрын
@@PhilipStephens007 You grasp the idea of the 12th root of 2 well enough. What you are doing with the compass and ruler is what the 12th root of 2 means. So the ratio of the octave is 2:1 since there are 12 notes in the octave (7 white keys and 5 black keys) we split up that octave into 12 equal parts. Hench the 12th root of 2. If we only split up the octave into 5 parts it would be the 5th root of 2. For all practical purposes it is the distance between half-steps in our modern tuning. You might be able to squeeze some more accuracy if you used Euclid's construction of perpendicular lines after you have drawn each arc. I will try that for myself. I am in the process of building the 2 string guitar and when I come to the point of calculating the fret spacing I will do what I suggested to you and see if I can get less than a 3 mm error. Love your videos you are inspiring me because I recently got into wood working and you are showing how to do things with minimal resources so I am learning a lot!
