Thanks for the comment! Seems like I used a polishing or sanding attachment that was round on the tip. Kutsall makes some attachments that will work with Dremel.

Nice work! Have you considered drilling the hole with the forstner bit and then removing the center hole with the router? I imagine there'd be less sanding if you did it that way.
@fouroakscrafts7240

Use two Forster bits drill part way with one, but grind the point off the other one to finish the hole.

Steve Darnell you can use a spade bit with the point cut off and rounded.
@Sam-tg4ii
@Sam-tg4ii 2 жыл бұрын
3:07 you can now use a forstner bit on the drill press to clean the circumference of that hole without going too deep. The wood needs to be clamped down so it does not move around without the bit spur in the wood, of course.
@fouroakscrafts7240
@fouroakscrafts7240 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely prefer using the Forstner bit on the drill press. A lot easier to manage. That's what I used to make the bowls for these scoops. I was careful to plunge the bit only a certain depth. Thanks for watching.
@fouroakscrafts7240
@fouroakscrafts7240 2 жыл бұрын
Think I get what you're saying. You're saying come back over that hole with the forstner to clean up the jagged hole shown in 3:07. That's a great idea.
@Sam-tg4ii
@Sam-tg4ii 2 жыл бұрын
@@fouroakscrafts7240 Exactly. The alternative is to file off the spur of a cheap forstner bit as well. Thanks for the great content, btw.

I felt as though you could've showed more of the process. Nice job but, could you have used the forstner first, then chased it with the same size bull nose but chucked in you drill press or hand drill, then sand out? Also, I would've used a 8" sanding wheel with a table, make quick work of the outside bowl, then a spindle sander for the handle and transition areas. You got the job done though.
@fouroakscrafts7240
@fouroakscrafts7240 3 жыл бұрын
Since this project I did get a spindle sander. Would probably use it for something like this in the future. The bull nose bit would probably do fine, but I think it would do better in a plunge router versus the drill press. That bit cuts cleaner at a higher RPM.

I would think 400 grit should be enough sanding after raising the grain. Nice job though.
@fouroakscrafts7240
@fouroakscrafts7240 5 жыл бұрын
400 grit is plenty, you're right. I just like to go a little beyond that to give the wood a more polished look. And I'm finishing with mineral oil, so the final smoothness of the wood counts more. Thanks for the comment!

The one in this video is a benchtop bandsaw made by Delta. It's probably about 1/3 HP. But I upgraded to the Rikon 14" Bandsaw which is 1.5 HP. You may see it in some of my later videos.

It depends very much on your audience, but with narration, less is almost always more. I find that voice overs, added after the video is made, are generally better. It’s easier to write cleanly than to speak cleanly. Most people have a tendency to blather. Captions explaining what’s going on are worth considering too, as they add the discipline of minimising the wordage on the screen. Remember George Orwell, “If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.” Good luck.

Thanks Janet! I definitely agree with writing cleanly is easier than speaking cleanly. I have done some voice over on the other videos and that works generally better than me following the "outline" script format. However, it's still a challenge with these how-to type videos to time the voice over with the steps or gauging when to throw in that special woodworking tip (or critical task). I also forgot to optimize my mike with the camera on this one, so that's why it's a bit scratchy sounding. I'll continue to experiment some more and thanks for sharing that advice!

in my opinion, sanding a coffee scoop to 4000 is ridiculous.
@fouroakscrafts7240
@fouroakscrafts7240 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 4000 might be a little overkill. But I love using the Micromesh on my finished utensils, especially if applying a mineral oil finish. The micro mesh creates a very silky surface on the wood. But 1500 to 2400 is probably enough. Note that the micro mesh grit is not apples-to-apples with sandpaper grit. At least that's what I've been told.
