Released in 1988 but sounds more futuristic and lush than most of today's sample based synths... has a little darker tone than the Triton but still nice! Also your pads are superb as usual 👌

This realization has been inspirational to me. You can do* what the M1 does with any software sampler and a collection of standard effects. So I have! I take short but sweet waveforms and just focus on layering and how I can spread and smear out layers of twinkly small samples with stereo delay and reverb. The M1 is a masterclass in sound design with limited means. Take any huge patch and take away the fx and there is so much to learn *with the caveat that the M1 is a work of art with more than cheeky hobby hours put into the waveform selection

In fact, even the latest Korg music workstations still reuses some of the presets from the M1.

Thank you for doing these. I am starting to think I can make sounds that don't sound like trash now. I started by pulling up the program and following along making changes with the video. This has helped a ton.

I sometime feel like we do not give enough credits to those nameless engineers who designed these iconic synths that literally shaped the sound of our favorite music.. their aesthetics inspired so many artistic visions and creativity!
@bomubomuboiАй бұрын
Not wholly nameless! Quoting a SoS article (thank god there are people who have already done this research) “The company assembled an international team to develop the M1's sounds. As well as Jack [Hotop] (sound programmer), the group featured Peter Schwartz, (…) The team was completed by Athan Billias, Ben Dowling, Robby Kilgore, Jim Bescher, Michael Geisel, and Michele Paciulli.”

I love that = sprinkling/water-trickling texture at the beginning of the video. I'm thinking the next plugin I'll buy is this Korg m1 plugin, but as always, beautiful and informative tutorials
@VirtualModularАй бұрын
Yeah I love that sound too. Here's a tip, get any watery sample like a trickling stream for example, and load it into a convolution reverb. This gives any pad the watery texture of the sample! You can also try this with resonators (or any tuned comb filter). Hours of fun 😂

it's worth checking Korg's website regularly, they have some pretty good sales and special offers occasionally. I got the m1 plugin for $25 a couple of years ago, their bundle deals are pretty good too.

@@ivansoto9723 I feel the same way, but it all comes down to learning and experimenting with what you have learned. Channels like these are also helpful. It's more helpful when the creator of this channel is open to helping or answering any questions you might have

Thanks for the tutorial! How do you name the patch? You appear to (right?) click on "Init Prog" but whichever way I click on it, it doesn't let me type a new name (I"m on Mac).
@Thought-FormsАй бұрын
Cheers! Double left click on the name in the far left portion of that EASY screen (next to the LEVEL, PAN, OUT controls) and it should then let you input something
@Niles7787Ай бұрын
@@Thought-Forms Of course I tried everything except double clicking ... thanks! I'd like to add that if you select "Make Current All Data Default", next time you open the M1 it will have that patch as the default patch. Pretty annoying if you ask me. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to save and organise patches, it's frustrating that there's no manual available.

Is this the new V2 M1 Plugin? I have an actual M1EX and I read with the V2 plugin you can now finally export sysex to the hardware M1. I remember briefly using the original M1 plugin and this wasn't possible which is a bit of a weird oversight imo as librarians and editors now for old hardware seem to be lacking
@Thought-FormsАй бұрын
Yea V2 variant - I'm not sure about exporting, just had a poke around and couldn't see a straight forward way to do it. at the very least, importing sysex is possible...the bare minimum 😂 same story across all their VSTs (Wavestation, Triton)
@vinyljunkie07Ай бұрын
@@Thought-Forms Thanks for checking, I was told it was able to but didn't want to take the plunge if it obviously didn't. I also couldn't see evidence of this, I tried looking for the manual and only found the one for the original plugin
@r0tekzАй бұрын
Can patches be saved, or converted to sysex, for use by a hardware M1? I have the EX rackmount M1, and it would be cool to edit in the plugin, but play it with the hardware.
@Thought-FormsАй бұрын
Not directly through the M1 VST - at least, I can't find a way. You CAN import sysex files though if you wanted to load old M1 banks into the VST

I really appreciate these videos you make. Thank you for putting them out for us. I find that ambient sound design is something that I wish had more in depth tutorials like you do. I was curious if you would take a video request: Ive been really enjoying the synthesizer medieval ambient sound design in this album kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXmlqn-bq8acoassi=EJqfGl01j19JqGLq as of late but whenever I try to do similar pads as those in the first track they either sound too dry if I start from an orchestral patch or too "new age-y" if I start from wave form patches. Any help is appreciated
