Morag Gamble from Our Permaculture Life (www.ourpermacu...) and the Permaculture Education Institute (permacultureed...) explains the amazing benefits of Azolla for food, fibre, fuel, fodder, mulch, fertiliser, carbon drawdown and more.
It is incredible at making the most superb compost in such short time ! Scoop it out of the water, pile it up and wait a week - that's it. It makes the soil dark and rich and plants are thriving with it.
Azolla has been around since the time of the dinosaurs and is able to fix nitrogen and drawdown carbon. It is an abundant water plant that fixes nitrogen in a symbiotic relationship with the bacteria, Anabaena, which has been around for possibly 2 billion years.
Azolla is one of the fastest growing plants in the world that cleans the water as it grows. Some say it will be critical for the future of food production when fossil fuels are less accessible to make fertilisers.
In this film, Morag is out in the pond harvesting Azolla with her family and talks about this amazing plant.

It doubles in size in 3 days in compost water with full sun. I eat 1 lb a day all grown in a tiny 4x4' water trough, and it can keep up with me. It's very probiotic, and she neglected to mention that it's more than 90% digestible because it contains virtually no cellulose (plant fiber) and 40% protein. You'd have to eat 3 lbs of chicken to absorb the same amount of protein as you do from a lb of azolla. Also my fish absolutely love love love it.

Yes the late great Bill Mollison had a lot of good things to say about azolla and he used it a lot as mulch straight onto pondside plants. Great info and our chickens love it.

Morag, You are a wealth of information. I had never heard of Azolla until you mentioned it. Coincidentally, I'm buying property in Oracle, Arizona - close to Biosphere 2. What a nice coincidence that you mentioned it in your Azolla video. Thank you!

Thanks for the great video. Do you know if it is suitable to feed to chickens? There area I live in has had practically no rain for six months now so the pasture our chickens usually free range on is dead. The local river is full of duckweed though so I was hoping this could provide an alternative vegetation source during this dry period.

I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO EAT IT. I'VE SEEN MANY VIDEOS, ALL KINDS OF ANIMALS FEASTING ON AZOLLA, EVEN IF THE OWNER SETS A REGULAR FEEDS THE SIDE.SINCE THE ANIMALS FID NOT DIE, AND EVEN GETTING HEALTHIER WITH AZOLLA, I WILL EILLINGLY EAT AZOLLA, BECAUSE HUMANS ARE ANIMALS TOO.

Please note that in UK, it is one of the MOST INVASIVE WATERBORNE PLANTS and is a nightmare. "The mats that form on the surface of the water which can be 30cm thick. During hot weather, mats can double in size in just four or five days. These: block out light, killing our rich and diverse aquatic flora, impede flood defences and water-based recreation, such as boating and angling, and reduce oxygen availability, which can lead to the death of fish and invertebrates. It can also cause livestock deaths when animals mistake water for land." Not sure which subspecies this article is referring to. Maybe just keep it in a bathtub outdoors.

Gerry Hale THAT WAS BEFORE THE FARMERS DISCOVERED ITS USE. BUT IF YOU OBSERVE, THERE ARE MORE AZOLLA FARMERS NOW UPLOADING VIDEOS ABOUT THEIR AZOLLA FARM AND THE BENIFITS. AZOLLA CAN CUT 50% OF YOUR REGULAR FEEDS COST FOR YOUR FARM OR RANCH. JUST TAKE LITTLE TIME VIEWING IN KZbin, YOU WILL BE AMAZED WATCHING THE ANIMALS FEASTING ON AZOLLA.

If it is that much of a problem here in the UK maybe we should be harvesting it on an industrial scale and feeding it to our animals as a way of managing it? It is way better than spraying it with herbicides. A bit of joined up thinking could be in order, turn a prolific problem into abundance.

Is that also known as Pond Scum ?
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife 6 жыл бұрын
No different thing. Pond scum is a floating mass of algae. Azolla is an aquatic fern which has a symbiotic relationship with certain bacterias and has the highest nitrogen fixing capacity in nature. Read more about azolla here: azolla.fc.ul.pt/astrobiologia/azolla.pdf
