This year is going to be a drought year. One way to get your plants stronger for this dry summer is working on the roots. This can be done with root trainers & air pruning. The more root biomass the greater the chance to capture water from the surrounding soil.

Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her p
ost-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Hey! I haven’t started anything yet this year and won’t be able to until next week. 😢 I’m usually an early bird! Tomatoes (my favourites, not store-bought) are my main thing. What can I do to maximize growth and production, seeding them so late? I’m in zone 2, almost 3. :)

I abuse my seedlings and make them build character. I run them on the ragged edge of death by drought. I try to make it so being transplanted into the garden is an upgrade in conditions.

Thanks for explaining root training and air pruning. I play the radio for my plants, they like the Sunday morning garden show the best, but not the golf show., I have to change stations to the Sunday afternoon blues show.

1:51 Glad you mentioned that. I’m a believer. True story, 2021 was my best gardening year by far, and it was the year I consistently played Rob Zombie in the grow room, and while gardening outdoors. 🤔

Thanks for the water that will reach northern Wisconsin, but it does the same thing here. That is run into a small pond that immediately makes a turn for the lake across the road, which is about 7 feet low on a depth of 40 feet.

I agree with Tomato roots I didn't root train or air prune but I did side by side test with 24 Tomato plants planted and ground lever vs 2-3 inches deeper the plants at ground level grew bigger had bigger and more fruit and less blossom end rot

I had great success with 'mounding' the soil in the garden last year. It particularly came in handy when we had that deluge of rain, where my garden was flooded, but the plants were elevated on the 'mounds'. Will I have problems this year if I do the same thing? Thanks for sharing this Ashley.

I play my violin up in the grow room, haven't killed my audience yet, lol. Will inoculating seedlings with mycorrhizal fungi as they are potted up aid in drought resistance? Several year ago I used mycorrhizal inoculant on my seedlings and it did make for larger root systems, using it again this year. Another excellent video! Stay Well!!!.

Sounds like it's going to be a good year for my experiment. I've got 2 sets of tomato seedlings started. The plan is to take the tall ones, and bury them deep. I'm not looking for more roots on the stem....just to have the main roots deeper. The second set will be normal 8 week old seedlings by the time they go outside. I'm planning on alternating them along cattle panels. I know over size "seedlings" tend to stall, and then the smaller seedlings catch up. I guess I'm going to find out.

Speaking of container gardening... would you ever make a video for the people who can only do a balcony garden? 🤭 I would love your tips! My balcony tends to get hotttt and I'm not sure of a solution. Shade netting?

You could try setting tomatoes potted in cloth pots into extra deep drip trays so they always have access to water. Best crop ever the year I did that. I use the same principle with my geraniums and get year round flowers.

Tomatoes can dig into 2m depth. I read that they shouldn't be watered for some days after beeing transplanted for encouraging a deeper root system. Air pruning or root trainers seem to be a must-have. Love from Germany.

OK, so because I start overthinking too much, I need to see if I have this right.....I should not transplant my tomato plants as deep as possible, if we're thinking more drought conditions. I'm in the midwest USA, sandy loam while at the same time with a very high water table. Last year it was drought, the year before everything was in standing water for a week bc the water had nowhere to go. It's been one crazy learning experience having come from a very clayey soil a couple years ago. Really, do we plant drought tolerant plants, or wet-mesic plants? Anyway, this has me still second guessing because who knows what we will get this year? BTW, we are moving toward developing landraces, but still want to put plenty of food up.
