One of my favorite things to do in a level is to add a checkpoint room. A little room for a moment of peace between the action. Those rooms are always fun to decorate. (I've even added a few Easter Eggs in some of my CP rooms using decorations).

@anypsotis7976
@anypsotis7976 4 жыл бұрын
@@Arrowstotle This might not be the most common mistake, but by far the biggest one IMO. No clear indication of where to go. In kaizo levels it's necessary, but even in normal levels it flows so much better. For aesthetic purposes, semisolids are hard to overuse, so I would always recommend people to use those frequently :)
@Arrowstotle

@@anypsotis7976 Absolutely! Indicators are important (obvious or subtle). Coins can really help with this. Semisolids are definitely the easiest thing to add to instantly make a level look better.

Tip: I personally prefer if you are hanging a bridge from tracks, you attatch the tracks to the top tile, with the little fence, then the bottom tile. Only in the SMW style, with the log-bridges, you can attatch the bottom tile.

Back to ground decoration: You need to keep in mind that there are “natural” and “manmade” themes. The natural themes are ground, underground, underwater, desert, snow, forest, and sky. The manmade themes are castle, airship, and ghost house. If something is natural, then that means that it’s more “random” and less “straight”. This means that ground decorations as well as things such as pebbles in underground tiles, starfish in underwater tiles, or fossils in desert tiles can be placed randomly and look proper. However, with manmade themes, it’s the exact opposite. Things such as statues and railings need to be placed in a meticulous manner so as to give that location a “structured” feeling. Things such as cracks in ghost house tiles can be randomly placed, but you know what must not ever be placed randomly under any circumstance? *AIRSHIP WINDOWS* It really bothers me to see a bunch of sporadically placed windows in courses. If a ship maker were to do that in real life, they’d probably get fired or ridiculed on something like r/crappydesign. Consequently, you need to place your airship windows in a consistent manner. I’d suggest rows of them 1 tile wide gaps in between each window. Be sure to keep these on the same X-axis, unless you want a zigzag or stacked window design.

A personal rule I like to follow when making courses: Underground, Ghost House, and Castle courses are indoors, so generally they should have ceilings. I'm currently working on a vertical stage that uses both halves of the space provided. I want to keep both sections separate, so I used the method shown in the video. The left portion works fine and doesn't scroll, but for some reason that eludes me, the right section scrolls to the left. Again there are ground blocks separating both section from top to bottom and from left to right. Either I'm missing something, or this doesn't work on vertical stages.

@thephantomist7199

With all these ugly courses being shown, it gives me an idea. How about fixing old hot garbage levels? Find an old hot garbage level from Mario Maker 1, copy the level layout into Mario Maker 2 using the first games level viewer, and take the existing parts from the course and turn it into a functioning, beautiful course! This wouldn’t be an attempt at shaming the creator of the original course, more so showing how significant improvements can be made and how to turn something ugly and unwanted into a wonderful treat for all.
@Arrowstotle
@Arrowstotle 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely a cool idea! Mario maker 1 was definitely more limited as well. I feel like a lot of courses that have potential are not given a chance because of the visual aspects

Arrowstotle Not just aesthetics, but also blatant enemy spam. Was thinking of keeping the same general course parts there, but adding more and changing things around to turn a borderline unplayable mess into a wonderful work of art! Kinda like those videos of cleaning up hoarder houses.

I'm not a huge fan of ground vines for decoration. With a thumb stick it's easy to climb by accident. I recently got a controller with a dpad though, so that should help.

I'll give you another tip. Always connect the bottom of semi-solid platforms and mushroom platforms to something. If you don't they just look unfinished and ugly. Also if you connect hard blocks/question blocks/ ice blocks/ brick blocks to something like bridges, semi-solid platforms, mushroom platforms or pipe make sure those blocks can't be destroyed.

Arrowstotle I’ll usually only use mushroom platforms for athletic levels or in the SMB3 airship theme to look like metal supports. I always hide the stalks in that case.
