I'll never go for a ADV bike. They're way to heavy for offroad use, especially if you're not experienced with offroad riding. Drop it a few times and you won't want to pick it up anymore. Growing up riding dirt bikes and doing motocross, having a heavy bike is not practical. Too much weight transitioning in dirt is never good. Find it funny that KTM are playing catch up to the new Ducati Mono Hypermotard. Hopefully KTM get rid of that ugly outdated halogen headlamp.

@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
Nice! I didn't get the Enduro R for a few reasons, mainly because I ride street 98% of the time. Also, I will put Shinko 705 ADV tires on my 690's 17" wheels like I have on my YZ450FX supermoto which I have been riding Shinkos tires since 2018 and do just fine off-road. A 21" front wheel is the best for off-road BUT they usually require an inner tube which can get punctured and cause you to be stranded. You can ride 17" tubeless wheels with ADV tires off-road just fine BUT you have to stay seated and navigate the bike over large obstacles, you can't stand up and ride over everything like. 21" front wheel can. However, you're not going to buy a 690 to do gnarly off-road riding anyways, they are just too heavy to do serious hardcore enduro riding, that is why I feel the supermoto is better choice because most people ride street and any moderate off-roading can be done on 17" wheels with ADV tires like my YZ does.

I fitted the short KTM screen and Seat Concepts seat to my 690 Enduro R for all day comfort. I put Touratech luggage racks on the rear to take weight off the subframe, and use Wolfman side bags, tank bag and duffel bag for luggage. I’ve ridden steep, technical tracks fully loaded with no problems. My longest day has been 500 miles, only reason I stopped was because I arrived home 😊
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын

To answer your question at the end of the video, I'm mostly a pavement user and after having offorading pretentions for a few years with my 701, came to the realization that I do not offroad at all and never will. It's part of why I traded up to the bigger ADV bike. I wanted something that would maximize my on road usability. I can still go on dirt roads and gravel roads just fine with a big ADV. That's the extent of my offroading, and even then rarely, so makes sense in my case to make the changes I made. The other reason as I mentioned before in the past is that the 701 seat and I just never got along, even the comfort seat, while it helped, was not enough for me. In a completely different topic, question for you. What size airbag vest do you use? I normally wear large shirts and my jacket is a large as well. Would that mean I should also just get a large size airbag vest?
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
Yeah it comes down to your riding preferences. My airbag vest is a large and I normally wear large shirts as well. You'll probably be fine with a large but measure yourself and look at the size chart to be sure. You are smart to get an airbag vest. Stay safe!

I have a gas gas sm700. I love this bike and agree with everything you said. I only have 2 complaints with it. First, the traction control is a pain, but easily fixed by spacing the sensor away from the tone ring in the rear. The second is not fixable. This bike should come with cruise. The bike already has fuel injection, throttle by wire, and an ecu. No reason not to have it. I had a built fe501s and got rid of it for every reason you mentioned. Too light for mile munching, and the maintenance was just too much. While my GG isnt as comfortable as my goldwing, with a seat comfort XL seat and bar risers, its pretty good. I have been looking into rotwiller performance to bring the beast alive. Ive read really good things...like close to 80hp with deletes, intake, pipe, and tune. Im a shorter guy at 5'8". I had my local suspension shop install the factory ktm lowering kit. Its way better for me now. I lost a little clearance, but onroad improved because its not as tall. I would recommend this bike to anybody.

It is a lot easier to go that route than trying to make the smcr more off road capable. But if you are more on road the 17s are awesome
@davidmallia6289 ай бұрын
If you do not mind the hassle of changing the wheels around, great. But if you do mild off road, Supermoto is very capable with adequate tires. 17 inch do not roll as good on rougher terrain, and front brake discs are close to ground, and more vulnerable.
@gabrielkopp20369 ай бұрын
@@davidmallia628 that the whole point.. if your trip 95%pavement use the 17" wheels and if your trip is 70 % off road use the 21 18 wheels.. it takes 10 minutes to change out wheels ..
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
The problem is a 21" front spoked wheel usually requires an inner tube which can leave you stranded if there is a puncture/flat. And the tubeless 21" forged non-spoked wheel should not be used off-road much because they can crack and compromise the safety of the bike. The truth is you don't need a 21" front wheel to ride off-road, I ride off-road just fine on my YZ450FX supermoto with 17" supermoto tubeless spoked wheels with Shinko 705 ADV tires, however, you can't ride off-road the same way you can with a 21" front wheel, you have to stay seated and guide your bike over logs with the 17" wheels.

The equivalent for me is my DR650. With a bigger tank, full Cogent suspension, Seat Concepts commuter seat, heated grips, lowered pegs, etc., it's my lighter weight adventure bike. Eventually I'm going to put a 19" wheel one it. I have Nelson Rigg Sierra 27L saddle bags that I like, but I recently removed the pannier racks and got the new Nelson Rigg Hurricane dual sport saddle bags. I haven't done a trip with them yet, but it was nice to remove the rack, and they should hold all I need for a weekend trip. You should check out the Hurricane Dual Sport saddle bags. 14L per side, waterproof, roll-top design, and affordable. Rigg gear is good quality for the price. As for a big windshield like the one you showed, you might want to consider what I have to say. I tried a big windshield off of the V Strom 1000 I had, and it acted like a big sail on my handlebars, and encouraged shaking in the bars. When they're mounted on a subframe independent of the bars, it's a non-issue. It's just something to consider.

If you are doing such a long trans American tour, IMO you picked the wrong bike. Why didnt you buy a 690 enduro R instead? Itchy Boots uses a CRF 300 Rally and she rides and goes pretty much anywhere she wants. Granted her bike is heavily modded but its fit for almost any purpose except the track. Its not always about power and wheelies. Its about the ride and reliability.
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
Actually, there is a false belief that you need a 21 inch front wheel to ride off-road, not true, however, the 21" front wheel is much better at going over large obstacles like logs. I;ve been riding 17" Shinko 705 ADV tires on my YZ450FX since 2018 and have ridden off-road over logs, mud , deep gnarly brush, etc You just have to ride a different way, you can't stand up and riding over everything like a 21" front wheel and 18" rear wheel can, you have to stay seated and guild the 17" wheels over large obstacles. Also, the biggest weakness of a 21" front wheel is they almost always require an inner tube which can get a puncture and cause you to be stranded unlike my tubeless 17" supermoto wheels with ADV tires. The only 21" front wheels that are tubeless are the solid forged non-spoked wheels but they should not be ridden harsh off-road because the rim can crack and compromise the safety of the bike. Spoked wheels can absorb impacts from large obstacles better. I owned a WR250R dual sport with a standard 21" front and 18" rear wheel, I do just fine off-road on my 17" wheels with ADV tires on my YZ450FX supermoto. I ride 98% street, so a 690 SMC R supermoto was the better choice for me.

@@CycleCruza The 2024 Africa Twin, Triumph Tiger Rally Pro and a couple others have 21 inch tubeless spoked front wheels but I understand those are different and also heavier bikes. Just don't say they don't exist because they do. Maybe not for the 690 enduro r, not sure, haven't checked. Tubes leave you stranded? Yeah but only If you don't carry spare tubes and tools to change them with. Can that be a pain? Yes. Is it impossible? No. You mod your bikes by yourself, I'm sure you would be able to change a tube also. If the mods you will be doing for your bike will be sufficient for the riding you intend to do then great. You are correct, 18/21 combo isn't a must to go light off roading, what I've seen 110cc scooters do in Thailand is amazing. If you are truly intending to get more serious then you will have higher limitations with your set up. Manufacturers don't put certain combinations on a bike just for fun. There are methods to their madness. I was just trying to give an example that you don't always need the most powerful bike to tour or have an adventure. When you have time check out the new AJP PR7 (probably not available in America) or the Kove 450 Rally. Bless up and safe travels always.

I think the 690 is a good platform for a mid weight ADV bike. The 690 Enduro might have been a better choice but you can work with what you have. The big bikes have their place. They can easily carry all the things you will need to be self sufficient on extended trips. They have the fuel range and creature comforts for long days in the saddle. They are well suited for pavement and gravel roads. I think the point is if a pro rider can do what you see in the commercials on an unloaded bike, they can certainly meet the needs of what most people will actually use them for. I’ve ridden my R1200 GS in some pretty hairy places and I’ve had to pick it up a few times. With the right technique it’s not that bad but I’ll admit that I’m not interested in doing that all day long. I also have a KTM 500 EXC-F. I mostly mount it in the back of my Wrangler JL Rubicon and take it to the general areas I want to ride and basecamp from there. While I still like my 1200, I find that this is closer to the ideal situation for me. I can do things with ease on the 500 that would be pretty terrifying on the GS. And when I’m tired I can make my way back home in comfort in my Jeep.

Imo, if you ride more street than off-road the supermoto is better choice. You don't have to have a 21" front wheel to ride off-road, however, you just have to ride different off-road with 17" wheels but as long as you have ADV dual Sport tires you can ride off-road just fine but just can't ride over logs with ease like a 21" front wheel, you have to assist the bike over logs with 17" wheels. I've been riding in the woods fro years on 17" wheels with Shinko 705 ADV tub-less tires.

Yamaha t7 cyclcruza… yes they’re heavy but if you’ve ridden any single track or enduro you’ll have enough skill to handle it off-road and it can cruise in highway for hours more comfortably

Hi cycle Cruza greetings from Greece I had this bike for many years and olso the 690 duke so I know these motor the only thing it needs oil change every 5k miles don't do it on 6 especially on a brand knew bike and use full synthetic motorex the ktm approved oil and that's it enjoy!!!!!
@kaptainkyle709 ай бұрын
On a new bike I usually change the oil and filter before 300 miles. It's cheap and easy.

There are definitely drawbacks to touring on the 690SM/701SM: - 3 gallon fuel tank, maybe 140 mile range - No modern features like heated grips or cruise control - Your butt is going to hurt after like 2 hours :-D
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
It is a 3.6 gal tank which'll do just fine, you just get gas a bit more often but 120-140 miles is ok I did 12+ hours straight on my cbr600rr and cbr1000rr and was just fine. You wouldn't want a larger tank to make more weight. When riding off-road you'll get much better range because you can't go very fast. You can always bring Rotpaks with extra fuel if need be. You can easily add heated grips and you can add an aftermarket cruise control. Get a comfort seat for long rides.

I would not recommend taking the SM and Turing it into an Enduro. There are some major differences in the sensors for the traction control that do not bode well when you start taking it off-road. You’re better off taking the 690 Adventure and turning it into a super moto. I can’t state all the exact intricacies, but these are all the things I was told by the dealer. Do not turn a SM I to an euro. It’s something about the sensors and tactical control that gets messed up. I can’t recall the exact reason, that was just what I was told. I 100% count be wrong. But the dealer talked me out of it, and I doubt they didn’t want me to buy the bike 🤷🏽♂️ idk.

The number ONE best MOD for this bike is a Rottweiler Intake Kit and ECU remap. Man this will throw you off the seat I promise. Ask everyone that owns a KTM and has a Kit like this installed. Day and Night Difference. The Euro5 bikes run way too lean and shitty. Cheers !

Love your channel but I am going to have to disagree with you on the ADV bike is not for offroading. I have a friend who offroads his all the time and even does these weekend rides/competitions where a bunch of ADV riders get together and run through these obstacle courses on their bikes and go off roading, hangout and camp, he says it is really fun.
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
Thanks for bring a viewer! You are correct, you can ride off-road with a ADV bike and many do, however, you can't do anything hardcore, that is what I meant. No disrespect to the ADV community. Even with this 690 I would never try to do any hardcore enduro riding, just light off-roading. Super lightweight 2 strokes are for the hardcore stuff, my YZ450FX is pretty light weight enough to some hardcore stuff but nothing like a featherweight 250cc 2 stroke at 225 lbs.

Yeah been looking for a long time, had about 5 trucks checked for pre-purchase inspection but all had issues. It is really tough to find a clean used truck that isn't over 25k.

I see the problem here. There's a LACK OF PROFESSIONAL RIDERS. But NO LACK OF EXCUSES. You're gonna need a Seat Concepts seat for that thing if you tour. You're gonna need a set of 18/21 wheels with gravel knobs if you do the TAT. Or you could have started with the T7 Tenere..... for a more dirt oriented Enduro. Or KTM 690 Enduro R.

Questionable ground clearance, suspension travel, and cast wheels. Unless you have young knees it's also a bit small for a 6' rider. I'm still waiting for a Yamaha WR450R/X but I'm not holding my breath. The Honda CRF450RL is close but still requires more attention than I'd prefer.

Sell it and get the suzuki V-strom 650. Why would you want to take the Ktm off road if you already have the Yamaha for that. You have two tools that do the same thing, albeit one has a little bit more top end which you don't really use.
@kaptainkyle709 ай бұрын
Riding the TAT on Yamaha would be fun but the constant valve checks and oil changes would not be. Honestly I'd prefer to take my WR250X on BDRs and the TAT over the V-Strom. Think of the 690/700/701 series as big WR250R/X's when it comes to fun and easy maintenance. More power (and weight) baby!

The professional riders in those ads are misleading to novice riders. The thing with heavy ADV bikes, getting stuck, taking a fall or getting hurt in the middle of nowhere puts you in danger.
@CycleCruza9 ай бұрын
💯 Exactly! So many noobs believe you can really ride a big bike that off-road easy. lol There is a motovlogger that started his channel way back with a ADV bike riding off-road and he ended up with a hernia and switched to a DRZ400 and things got better for him. Some people have to learn the hard way.

Where's the fun in that? My light ADV is currently a WR250X with a Giant Loop Coyote bag... and yes I've owned dual-sports prior.
