Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French

Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French

Күн бұрын

Welcome back to Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French! Let me show you how to create a layered piece of art from a flat picture. This is my entry for Simply Wooden Creations' 2015 Halloween Scroll Saw project contest. THANK YOU TO RUSSELL CLARIDY for hosting the contest! My wife suggested this classic image from Charles Shulz' animated short "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and I'm glad she did. The picture lends itself beautifully to the style. But this same technique can be applied to just about any picture, comic panel, coloring book page, etc...
Converting a flat picture to a 2-1/2 dimensional ("2.5D"... yes, that's really a thing!) work of art really brings it to life in quite an impressive and visually captivating way! And it's easy to do!

+Edgar Nattress Mine too. Quick, meaningless fact: I recently watched a video on how the movie isn't what we generally remember it being. It was somewhat nit-picky, but it pointed out that it's not even a "movie", really. It's only 25 minutes long, which surprised me. Thank you for watching!

+Cactus Makeshop Thank you, Sir. Most of the paints I used are acrylics which, on this wood, had a very dull, matte sheen. But I finished the entire thing with about 7-8 coats of clear spray lacquer, which really gave the paint a great amount of vibrancy. You ought to see it in person. It's a real beauty!

That definitely deserves to be framed and hung on the wall. Charles would be proud Steve. The scrolling and layering was perfect. I'm not as patient nor as skilled as you in painting so perhaps I will print it out in color and stick the paper to the different layers then lacquer it. BTW, the Charles M. Shultz museums (and his Ice Rink) north of San Fransisco is a cool little place to visit if you're ever up that way.
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 8 жыл бұрын
+MRrwmac Thank you very much! I suspect he would have liked it. I think the paints really did justice to the source material. But printing and sticking would work too. Or even using photographs. I'll bet the museum is pretty cool.

@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Shannon You know, scroll saw work is a mixed bag for me. I generally avoid "scroll saw projects". I'm not really into fretwork and I'm generally underwhelmed by much of the scroll saw work I see. That's not to discount or belittle the genre; it's just not my style. I do USE my scroll saw quite a lot, but more as a utility tool. But sometimes I come up with a 'scroll saw project" that gives me a glimpse at what others love about the scroll saw. Scroll saw or not, I'm very happy with the result of this project and would definitely do it again. Thanks for watching and commenting!

+Heavyboxes Thank you very much! I brought this to our woodworking club meeting yesterday and the first thing most people commented on was the paint job. Looking great. Reminds me of the paper tole projects my daughter was doing in 1990's. Creating voids behind some levels really makes them bounce even more than just being built out. Thanks for introducing a new idea to me.

Wow! Excellent paint job Steve! I thought it was a printout at first! :D

+Geeksmithing I appreciate that, Sir! You know, I get more comments on the paint job than anything else with this. Oddly, I was concerned that the paint would be the weakest part. But once I started spraying the clear lacquer - and it all came to life with vibrant color - I was treated to a very pleasant surprise.

+JC Oliva Ooo, thanks for the compliment! And thank you for watching. I think I'll have to make more pictures in this style some time in the future. I've received tons of positive feedback. Online and in person. I think stuff like this would make great gifts.

Awesome video and project. But I do have one complaint: I did not think I needed a scroll saw before, but now I want to get one and I don't know where to put it. I guess I need to go do some more organizing.

+The AMC Garage In response to your complaint: You're welcome! Haha, thanks for watching! As for finding space: good luck. That's a problem that will plague woodworkers for all of time. Our shops will never be large enough.

Kewl stuff man! I like how you painted the edges black to give them more of a cartoon look. One idea that came to mind for me was to round over the edges so that they taper to the back with no visible edge from the front. But that might not look so great. IDK. Have you tried something like that before?
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 8 жыл бұрын
+crazyray05 Thanks! I rounded over the edges a bit so that there are no square edges facing the viewer. But they're rounded, not tapered. It made a huge difference in the appearance of the layers.

Phew! Quite a headache figurin' out the layering, but no bother for a southpaw! As always, really enjoyed this vid mate. Incidentally how can I get one of your Woody stickers?
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 8 жыл бұрын
+Mark McCluney It can be a little bit of a brain teaser at first. But really, the picture itself tells you how things are layered. It's just up to you to decide how many layers you want to tackle and then confine the picture elements to that number of layers. As for the sticker, send me a message with your address. Thanks for your support.
