Timber harvest done right, is not only greatly beneficial to the habitat, but can also help you purchase a piece of property. Contact an independent forester who can come to the property and build an inventory list. Typically, trees 18 inches or larger will be identified and listed. That list can then be sent out for bid and the forester can give you advice on who to hire.
Not only can you use a timber harvest for financial benefit, but also for the deer that call the property home. If you've always dreamed of creating an opening for a food plot, this is your chance. Have the timber company clear off an entire section regardless of timber value and with a little leg work afterwards, you can have that secluded food plot! Where other trees are harvested, sunlight is allowed to hit the forest floor producing a flush of new trees and native vegetation that will feed your wildlife and the money from the harvested trees can be used to pay on your land for years to come.

Great video, I’ve been logging for close to ten years and so few people understand what you just made so clear. I’m a firm believer that proper tsi and whitetail management go hand in hand.

Yeah so I have just bought 28 acres and share your same enthusiasm I’m so pumped to have my own land for the first time! I have huge oak 80 90 footers all woods and was thinking about opening it up to make a food plot, maybe 1 to two acres worth idk haven’t really thought about it much. But roughly how much do you get say per mature oak? I really don’t have a clue. And how is that food plot working out for you? It looks exactly like what I’d like to do

Great advice! I love y'alls videos and have learned a lot! Although my particular situation wouldn't benefit from a selective cut, I can think of a lot of places that could and will keep this in mind when I buy future properties!

I am a logger from N.C. and I have to say looks like they did a great job protecting the trees you left. What state are you in, that was some nice white oak.

Any tips on dealing with what are now impenetrable thorn thickets created by some very aggressive select cuts 15 years ago?

Those are always tough. Is it accessible by machine? You easiest solution if it's accessible is to get in there and cut it with something like the Vail X-Series Brush Cutter.

Great information, thanks for posting. We are about ready for another cut on our place. After the last cut, the deer came in and started to bed in the thickets that sprung up, where they had never bedded before. A chainsaw is truly one of a deer's best friends. As a side note, can you please give me the song title and artist for the outro music? Thank you.

Have any experience with salvage harvest? Was set to do a clear cut on my Aspens for regeneration and then selective on the rest of my timber up until a tornado hit and knocked/up-rooted a number of trees. It's a mess right now, but something has to be done. Just curious what I can expect in terms of any value versus what I was aligned with before. Got a logger lined up, working on the particulars.
