We wanted to remove the majority of the trees from our property to make room for pastures, gardens, and our home, so we contacted a timber company who came out, cut down our trees, and paid us to take them away! Check out what our property looked like before, during, and after the process as well as exactly how much we made.

You estimate that you had 16-17 acres cleared, but only got $8k.....the trees seem to be of a decent size. The money seems very low to me. Also, it looks like they left the property rutted and not in great shape. I think you would have been a lot better off using a contract forester to negotiate and supervise your timber sale. $5/ton on pine pulp, $10/ton on chip n saw...those seem very low on the prices. Hope everything is coming along for you.

That is very much right most loggers charge 14 to 16 dollars a ton for just cutting and depending on the miles to the milll trucking price fluctuates if you own your own trucks. Like here in Ms the price for pulp wood is 25 dollars per ton. Trucking for us is 8 dollars so you can do the math 14 and 8 is 22 only leaves 3 dollars. We take a loss of a dollar on pine pulp because we won’t cut a job and give the landowner any less than 4 dollars a ton

8k off 16acres . 500 per acre . its not good but its not bad either . im just hoping they came back and cleaned up the land so you can plant rye grass and get that place green for pasture .

They didn’t clean it up, and we’ve been spending the last few years working on it. We some pastured established already and are currently working fencing in about 10 acres for sheep & cattle.

I live in Alabama and I have timber on 10 acre acres of bluff land. No local lumber company has the equipment. Do you have any recommendations or can you reference a company that can help.
@RigginFarm
@RigginFarm Жыл бұрын
Most timber companies won’t touch less than 20-25 acres. Moving the equipment is very costly, and it needs to be worthwhile.

Feller "bencher"? It's a buncher, as in it bunches the trees.

I would have thought you discussed and agreed to what was getting cut. Why surprised. I would also think the logging company would be responsible to put the cut area back to its normal grade free of ruts and cut . They I would think also put in swells or berms to minimize any erosion. Am I off base thinking this. I’m asking because I’m looking to buy some timber property and want to start managing the timber on it.

We had never gotten trees cut down, so there were a lot of questions we didn’t think to ask. That is why we made this KZbin channel. We want to share our experiences to help others.

We are looking to get land in Georgia in the future to build. The video and information was helpful. How will you be clearing out all of the leftover stumps? Is there a a service that can do that? Doing it yourself?
@RigginFarm
@RigginFarm 2 жыл бұрын
We were quoted $23k to remove stumps from about 5 acres. Instead we rented a mini excavator and skid steer for $7k and cleared about 3 acres working almost every day for a month. Obviously we bought our property to start a farm, and the USDA recently told us that they want us to keep most of the stumps in the ground to help prevent erosion. They'll eventually decompose, and the pasture we seed/start around them will establish and keep things together after the stumps rot away. Our chickens, ducks, and pigs don't mind the stumps. In fact, the pigs help root them up. We recently made a video that shows the way our property has transformed over a two year period. You can see before the trees were cut in May of 2020 all the way to May of 2022.

What company paid you for your trees? We are looking to clear out the back half of our property to have more running room for the kids.
@RigginFarm
@RigginFarm Жыл бұрын
Most timber companies will pay you for the harvest if you have a minimum of 20 acres to clear. It takes a lot of fuel to move their equipment to a property and the harvest to the mill, so you have to make it worthwhile for them.

@@michaelababbitt8385 Unfortunately you’ll have to take them down one by one with a chainsaw, and then you have to deal with the stumps. We made a video on how to effectively remove stumps that requires a one time $10-$15 price. It’ll be especially challenging if there are houses close to the trees, and that’s why most companies charge $1,000 per tree removed. We wish you the best and hope you can find a solution that’ll allow you to have more space for your children. 😊

In my opinion, you’ve destroyed your property. There’s already too much for us cut down for livestock. Why not buy farmland that has already been destroyed by deforestation? The last thing I would want is big diesel tree felling equipment, making ruts all over the forest floor. Environmental/ecological sustainability governs my thoughts. I have 210 acres and I’m not going to do what you’re doing that’s for sure. The first thing I did a set up an off grid, solar system to power all of my battery electric tools . My sawmill is electric and I don’t believe in using gasoline or diesel . Livestock is out of the question. Just look at Brazil what they’re doing. Destroying the rainforest for livestock is retarded. I’ll check back on your channel to see what you’re doing. You got ripped off for your lumber. I don’t like making negative comments, but I couldn’t help myself to tell you what I really think.
@RigginFarm
@RigginFarm 7 ай бұрын
We only took down about 15 acres of pine trees. Pines are only used for lumber and are meant to be cut down. We’ve been using regenerative farming practices to establish pasture and a garden. We couldn’t have put our home on the property without removing some of the trees. We have solar on our home, and it wouldn’t be effective without taking down trees. There are still so many trees that block the panels in the morning and evening.
