I just started playing some Irish coming from old time fiddle. Once I figured out that the image you drew was reversed I understood what you're describing and it's extremely helpful. Thanks so much! Very clean tone in your other videos as well which makes it great for learning by ear.

Very helpful, thank you! When you show the blue paper at ~ 1:25, I first wondered what a weird rhythm this is (2 separated, the next 3 slurred and then 3 separated), before I found out that your video is mirrored ;-)

Thank you! I’d nearly given up trying to read. Once I realized I needed to read it right to left, it actually helped. I knew I got it right by the couple times that you repeated the missed slurs.

If you've ever played Mouth of the Tobique, the triplets in the first two bars can be detached one, slur two, or vice versa, to spice it up a bit. Obviously, it's not a reel you'd want to start a new student with, but it's one that readily accepts some experimentation.

This is simiilar to what Kevin Burke suggests - it can be a bit counter intuitive to those used to playing reels on other instruments but certainly offers an interesting dynamic.

This has helped me so much. Thank you. Do you have other videos like this for other types of fiddle like, Jigs, hornpipes, slip Jigs etc?

@RosaMaria-im1iu no but now I will try to make one! I have a lot of thoughts and info on bowing patterns. It has come up in a lot of my videos more organically. I'll link a good jig one here

What about on a reel like ‘ cooleys ‘ where there is repeated notes and string crossing ?? I’ve been really having the toughest time making my reels sound like they have lift and it’s my favorite type of Irish tune 😭

Great..I have been trying to slur the first three as well and this is a kevin burke speciality (I got a lesson off him), but I think the first three detached is easier. Any suggestions on how to implement this without breaking down the tune..if you practice the basic bowing pattern would it naturally come into tunes?
@johnmc3862
@johnmc3862 9 ай бұрын
Just use it as a guide don’t use it as a pattern for all reels. The star of Munster is easy because some much if it is on one string(esp the 2nd part). Look at the pattern as possibilities. Practice slurring out of a bowed triplet or into a roll for example. Get an overall view rather than a set pattern.

CAn this. BE used with all reels?
@mikelafiddle
@mikelafiddle 4 ай бұрын
@raymond4u100 most of them yes, but when a quarter note comes along things get tricky. I almost always slur into a quarter note from the note before. When there's a dotted quarter or longer the pattern does usually break
