Man crystals like that from just evaporation? That's really cool! I evaporate my down but must be doing it at a more rapid pace because I usually get very small crystals. Silver is a really cool element. I feel like for my use there isn't much but the uses I do have for it are very useful.

If you dilute the acid 50/50 with water, the reaction will be over in just minutes. I do it inside an outer container with some water to cool the reaction vessel, absorb fumes and handle possible boiloverflows. And with a cover over the inner reaction vessel to limit gas outflow, so that the NO2 can redissolve to help with acid usage. Another cover over the outer vessel limits emission to the outside. If crystals are needed, the already hot and fairly concentrated AgNO3 solution won't take long to boil down...

Hello. Thanks for your video, 2 questions anyway : - you put excess of nitric acid. What does it become after evaporating the water ? - what happens with the silver nitrate if exposed to light, if you use the silver nitrate as electrolyte for plating ? I guess some silver becomes metallic and will precipitate and won't participate in the electroplating ? TIA

NurdRage, what are your thoughts on omitting gloves when dealing with concentrated nitric acid? Because of its violent reactions with latex and nitrile gloves, I see many people simply ignore gloves when handling concentrated nitric acid. One of my lab instructors at university even said as much, but told us it was university policy to always wear gloves in lab so it wasn’t up to him. Do you always wear gloves when handling conc. HNO3?

I once read about someone dissolving platinum by boiling the acid, using a water-filled RBF on top of the beaker as a condenser. While I could see this working for a few hours, eventually the steam bath would make it ineffective, yes? Have you ever seen or hear of running water "beaker condensers"? I suppose it would be possible to make one using the RBF method and a couple of water pumps with enough tinkering lol.

I think that using dilute nitric acid would work better, it would get rid of the passivation effect that In The case here can be caused when metals contact strong acids, normally nitric.

BTW, add some hydrogen peroxide to the reaction to get a more effective oxydising reaction, and nitric acid will be reacted will formed inside the reaction from the NO2

Fun fact I learned from someone that uses electrowinning to produce high purity silver +99.99%; high purity silver nitrate is not photosensitive. Impurities found in AgNO3 cause the darkening.

There absolutely is! Search for Tollens' reagent, it's a mixture including silver nitrate that can deposit silver metal on non-conductive surfaces.

Basically I want to create a "magic mirror" where you can see through the silver surface from one end, but being mostly reflective from the other side. @@sevenproxies4255 I hate to disappoint you, but the Tollen's reaction doesn't work that well as a way to deposit silver. You need an absolutely clean surface (you usually use aqua regia or piranha solution for glas) and you can't really do that to plastic and the resulting layer is extremely sensitive to scratches, so you can't polish it. Also, for every piece that turns out nice there are five others with an ugly silverish-brown taint with brown spots. If you want to have a nice, permanent one-way mirror, there is no way around sputtering.

If you think your acid is getting weaker over time titrate it. But an inorganic acid stored under the proper conditions should not spoil.

This is only really true for anhydrous nitric acid with over 90% concentration. For the usual 65% it´s no problem. It will get the gloves yellow and eventually penetrate through them though, so You still have to be careful.

I had a bad case of ingrown nail on my left toe twice. The first time a doctor prescribed stick of this shit, I had to shove it inside of that wound full of puss in order to kill the part of bed nail. It was *painful*. After several applications the flesh around the nail turned black, and after several more it dried out and look literally as if it was burnt, like a piece of charcoal. The second time a surgeon cut it out or something, I don't remember. Cut your nails properly and don't wear shoes that are smaller size than required.

Wrong, always use gloves but use them intelligently. For working with nitric acid, use vinyl gloves as the reaction is much slower. Make sure the gloves you use are oversized for rapid removal.

@@atrumblood I wouldn't say most, but with nitric acid i usually opt for a conc bicarb solution on stand by. Ive never gotten the orange stains from just nitric acid however, but ive gotten it from nitric acid sulfuric acid mixtures before.

I only wear gloves when there is extreme danger or I am working with an unknown. I work with concentrated sulfuric acid, and phenol a lot. Any time I get any on my hands, I just walk over to the sink and rinse off and get back to work. Maybe my skins isn't as sensitive to those chemicals. I just know that my skin hasn't melted off, and my recent blood work shows normal levels for toxins. I am fairly certain the only injuries to chemicals I've worked with haven been incurred by my clothes. Even wearing my lab coat all day and I still somehow get acid holes in them lol. I don't like to preach mindless safety. What I will preach is educating yourselves on the chemicals you are using, and awareness of what you are doing.
