I went to high school in the 80s and we nitrided quite a few things in chemistry class. We made celluloid, the stuff AC/DC wrote a song about and , of course, the heart medicine. It was fun. And the tests we did afterwards in the yard nearly knocked the windows out of the school building. Fun times. Too bad all the generations after 1970 missed out on absolutely all the fun in education. Love your videos, btw. Way underrated channel!!!

I ran a biodiesel rig down in Peru for about three months. We heated the (filtered) used cooking oil in a recycled (~40 gallon) water heater. With enough time in that stage you can boil off any water that's in the oil. I then added both a measured amount of methanol and lye and let that heat some more. The water heater assembly had a clear tube connection below it which allowed the glycerine to be dropped out of the mixture. Using a complicated system of pumps, the biodiesel then goes to the first of three bubble tanks. Each cleaning stage was in an approximately 65-gallon tank with a typical aquarium air bubbler at the bottom. Once it's made the rounds it's then ready to be stored in a 55-gallon drum. We ran the volunteer truck on 100% biodiesel and it ran just fine. The glycerine then is stored and turned into soap in a different process.

I don't think glycerin can be turned into soap. Its usually a byproduct of soap making, and sometimes they leave a little bit of glycerin in the soap. But turning glycerin into soap, i can't see that happening
@BertRowe-b3l
@BertRowe-b3l Жыл бұрын
@@ShannonDove-sy7ye Glycerin is used as an ADDITIVE in some soap formulations. Unless extra steps are done to separate glycerin from natural soaps, there is a bit of glycerin left in the finished soap already, adding more makes the soap less "drying". Someplace around 10% glycerin by weight is common for hand/face soaps.

i'm not too sure but the gel that formed could be some kind of soap. I've made biodiesel in the past and it usually formed when some water was present in the mixture, it can happen because there is some moisture left in the vegetable oil or because the hydroxide absorbed it from air, especially if it has been conserved for a long time (maybe in a not completely air-tight container). To avoid that, I usually pre heat the oil to about 120°C in order to remove all the water and "bake" the hydroxide to over 150°C to dry it completely. By the way if it doesn't interfere too much with the next reactions you can remove the solid junk and proceede anyway

If you make it again using WVO, you might find it interesting to search for esterification with small amounts of conc sulphuric, rather than just using the standard methoxide mix. If you already know of this, awesome, makes a HUGE difference to yield doesn't it! :) Of course, as well as increasing yield it (of course) decreases waste. Even with "grim" WVO, you only need tiny amounts (titrate but typically about 0.12% by volume acid to oil - so a 1 litre container of 96% acid (or even sulphuric acid based drain cleaner, utter purity is not critical here) is enough to process the best part of 1000 litres of oil.

Very interesting video. I retired form an Army Ammunition Plant where thousands of pounds of NG were manufactured on a regular basis to make double and triple base propellant and gun powder. We also manufactured nitrocellulose. We used 98% white fuming nitric acid and 104% sulfuric acid (Oleum) with pure glycerine. We used the Biazzi Manufacturing Process. We also recovered the nitric and sulfuric acids and reconcentrated them in a NACSAC plant. Back in 1985 we had an NG storehouse and nitrator explode containing 5,000 pounds of pure NG. Sadly two men were killed in the blast that left a huge crater in the ground.

For the yield on average triglycerides have a molar mass of around 885 g/mol and TNG mmass is 92.09 g/mol. This makes glycerine 10.41% of vegetable oils mass stoichiometrically. If you started with 425ml vegetable oil (i know you said 400 but the markings on the beaker say otherwise) that would be 391 grams adjusted for density. If you had a perfect yield the total amount of glycerine from oil would be 40.73 grams. So, finally, your approximate yeild would be 13.01% (5.3/40.73). This is just my calculation based on web sources and, like stated in the video, getting a precisce triglyceride molar mass is difficult. Hope this was interesting.

The cloudiness in the alkali hydroxide solution in methanol is caused by carbonates btw. Those form very fast by air and the carbon dioxide in it reacting with the alkali hydroxide. They are extremely sensitive to CO2 besides being extremely hygroskopic. The reactions shown really are cool and interesting, because they are so easy and only need a few very common chemicals. But the synthesis of nitroglycerine is very dangerous, especially when done correctly to get as much of a yield as possible. This needs to be done with very specific amounts of educts and at specific temperatures, producing lots of fully nitrated nitroglycerine, which is pretty sensitive. Doing the easier synthesis keeping the temperature rather low yields a mixture of nitroglycerine and partly nitrated glycerine, which is much safer. And very cool detail that you mentioned that nitroglycerine isn't a typical nitrate but an ester! Edit: Fun fact: The chemists working in dynamite factories (back then personal safety wasn't really a thing. Not comparable with today, where security is the most important thing. In the west at least, not really in china, india etc...) took up so much nitroglycerine by skin contact etc. that when they went on vacation, they had to take dilute (medical) nitroglycerin with them to inject from time to time, because they were so exposed to it and got such a tolerance that they suffered from extreme headaches without it! Back then work in a lab meant lots of new discoveries, but I still prefer working in a modern lab with modern safety precautions^^

This is interesting, but I hope no one actually tries to make this stuff. I was a chemistry enthusiast long time ago and although I read the proper recipes for this, I knew to never actually try making the stuff- for one thing fuming sulfuric and fuming nitric acids are hard to get , and very dangerous by themselves and things can go wrong at any point during the process. When purified, the stuff would not need a hammer to set it off: you can just let it drop fall from a pipette onto a hard surface and that would detonate it.

3:17 - the soap wouldn't be any "pain to separate" fro, glycerine - back in high school we were making soap on "Industrial chemistry" classes/ lab work, and I happened to be assigned , at one of those, with making soap. Long story short, is separates "by itself" after the reaction is done - all you need to do is to keep it warm (so the soap would stay liquid) and just wait. It takes few hours to separate the soap and glycerine, but other than that it totally "painless". EDIT -tej no, jakie "no promoting any oil company" - przeca każden widzi, (4:33) że to olej KUJAWSKI... ;-)

You can buy quite pure glycerin at low prices from many retailers, including pharmacies. It's colourless and does taste sweet.

I see my magnetic mixer hot plate design got produced, gotta love that Apple security that’s only good if they want it to protect you but you’d have to be “in The Club” for that to be the case. Almost 70% of my invention ideas have been developed since I started keeping them on my comp, I’ve never had money to develop even one. I solved the electric car distance problem so you didn’t have to stop for long periods to recharge but that was built over sees to almost exactly what I had, they don’t get everything right because they don’t have the brains and the only reason the other 30% isn’t created yet is because it’s too hard to understand my drunken notes, I can’t even understand most of them. Why bother with inventions when the patents don’t do anything for you but they do somehow protect huge corporations that fund the Deep State so that’s nice. I’m tortured like the original Tesla when the Deep State went after him.

Another thing I did with the grand chiller was to evolve Tetraamminecopper(II) nitrate (TACN), which as you know is a fairly weak explosive it's pretty safe to handle. I just wanted to see how I could increase its notorious low yield. I succeeded although I lost all my notes and it was so long ago I can't remember other than what I did was create spontaneously the ammonia nitrate to ammonia gas and leaving a nitrate source in its path I can't remember exactly how I did it but I got over 90% yield which is ridiculously unheard of with that experiment I instantly had dreams of becoming wealthy from the process and then I remembered it was a fairly useless chemical lol but if you try and make this try it with creating the gas under a extremely cold atmosphere within the vessel I got instant probably 10 g of perfect crystals in the blink of an eye as fast as it could bubble through It was the most fascinating thing I've ever seen I wish I would have typed out my notes so I could remember the process All I do remember is like I say I created the ammonia and the ammonia nitrate on the fly in the experimental vessel so that was basically the only things that I changed was the temperature using the Grant chiller and I believe alcohol but it doesn't really matter it wasn't that cold it was antifreeze type temperatures cold lol if you know what I mean usually use alcohol when you want to get very very Sub-Zero but at any rate yeah that was the only thing different than the normal process of making the crystals the most important part being creating the ammonia and evolving it to nitrate instantly in the same vessel with the copper compounds etc so if you look up the classic experiment and then play around with it you can probably increase the yield yourself the same way I stumbled on it purely by mistake let me know if you want that Grant chiller it's invaluable to any lab

Lazy, but it worked ! Nice video. Good call to destroy it after synthesis - there really is no point 'storing' anything that you know how to make. As a vasodilator, generally 5% in water sprayed under the tongue works. Interestingly it still isn't fully understood why it works first on the veins before the arteries. Maybe i got those switched around.

You really should be using a chiller I know they're expensive but you can get it much colder than an ice bath I know it's a pain setting up another piece of equipment I have a grandchilder made in England it's old it probably has some rust on it now I haven't looked at it in a couple years but I no longer use it because I am not set up with a few hood in my new home I may have to buy her build one The one that I bill was so good it exceeded all the laminar flow hoods that I've ever worked with. It's fun playing with the Grant chiller I got a bunch of borosilicate glass and flint glass and made many apparatus for chilling different shaped and size glassware it's actually a lot of fun coming up with these things. I'm moving to Vietnam in the spring if you would like my grantchiller I don't know they cost a thousands and thousands of dollars I would sell it for a couple hundred plus shipping that is a major discount on such an expensive piece of kit. Let me know

Glad this isn't censored. The processes involved in making bio diesel are nice, but i'd hope you approach it on a more industrious scale. The impurities in your nitro glycerine suggests that maybe the biodiesel video will produce it sub optimally or inefficiently, but i hope to be surprised. I view this as an important piece of 1800's technology and would hope that industrious folk retain this knowledge specifically because of it's parallels to soapmaking and biodiesel, which are themselves crucial technology for people to retain.

Easy-just make your teenage daughter wash dishes by hand, and throw out the Taylor Swift junk in her room while she's doing it-that adds the bigger, secondary explosion that requires the primary, smaller explosion (hand washing dishes) to set off. The Russians called it the "Tsar Bomba" and punched a hole in the atmosphere with it.

My dad worked on a hydroelectric project in the '50s. He told how they used to use gelignite to make a camp-fire because it burns real good. Soldiers in Vietnam used C4 stuck to the bottom of a canteen cup to heat water for coffee, sometimes scooped out of claymore mines. Is there anything HE can't do?

Can ethanol alcohol be used instead? What about just mixing burnt or slaked lime (from roasting oyster shells) with the oil, wouldn't calcium stearate precipitate out ? Calcium stearate being insoluble should just be filtered out. Would that make glycerin? Calcium stearate is supposedly what soap scum is that forms on a bath tub, comes from soap (sodium sterate ) reacting with calcium in the water.

If you were to add nitric acid to the soap making process, one would get nitroglycerin. You can mix the nitroglycerin with sodium nitrate and sawdust to make dynamite.

The reason why you had to do it at a high temperature is because you're supposed to use 3 times the amount of sulfuric acid than nitric acid. Instead of doing that 3:1 ratio you did a 1:1 ratio.
